Energy was high in F&aelig;lledparken as 188 pupils from Institut Sankt Joseph, Strandvejskolen, and Guldberg Skole took part in the &ldquo;One Year to Go&rdquo; relay on Friday morning. Each child ran 400 meters before passing the baton, and all participants were rewarded with a unique prize: a free entry to the World Championships One Mile (1,609m), taking place in Copenhagen on September 19, 2026.
With up to 65,000 participants expected, the event &ndash; officially titled the World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26 &ndash; has the potential to become the largest mass-participation sports event ever held on Danish soil.
The City of Copenhagen is looking forward to hosting the event:
&ldquo;As a modern capital city, Copenhagen should, of course, attract major sporting events that activate as well as inspire people. Therefore, I am very pleased that the children of the city will have the chance to become a part of the World Championships in running exactly one year from now. It is going to be huge when the world&rsquo;s elite visit Copenhagen with up to 65.000 runners across different distances,&rdquo; says the Lord Mayor Lars Weiss.
&ldquo;Today, schoolchildren took the very first steps toward the Half Marathon World Championships, and with that, we can truly begin the countdown to the biggest running festival Copenhagen has ever seen. I hope the experience has sparked their enthusiasm, because in a year the city will be ready to welcome them back together with both world-class athletes and thousands of recreational runners, for a championship that will bring the whole city together&rdquo;, says the Mayor of Culture and Leisure, Mia Nyegaard.
Building a legacy beyond race week 
Today's relay for schoolchildren was also part of the activation initiative &lsquo;Road to the World Championships&rsquo;, which aims to create meaningful, long-term engagement for various target groups because of hosting the World Championships. The initiative is run by one of the organizations behind the World Championships, the Danish Athletics Federation, and they are excited to use the event to inspire and engage young people:
"The World Championships in Copenhagen are not just about attracting the world&rsquo;s best runners &ndash; it&rsquo;s just as much about how we can use the championships to inspire and engage the next generation. The &lsquo;One Year to Go&rsquo; run is a great example of how we can open the doors to sports and give children a positive experience through running and the community around it. The goal is for the World Championships to leave a lasting impact that goes beyond the championship days themselves and strengthens running culture and clubs in Denmark far into the future," says Sofie Amdisen Andersen, project manager at Danish Athletics.
A global running festival awaits 
Today&rsquo;s school relay also marked the official one-year countdown to the World Championships, where the absolute best in the world will compete across three distances, setting the stage for a massive international running festival in the Danish capital.
&ldquo;Since hosting the World Athletics World Half Marathon Championships in 2014, Denmark has established itself as an innovative and strong running nation. With one year to go until the 2026 World Championships in One Mile, 5 km, and Half Marathon, preparations are well underway. Together with Danish Athletics, Sparta and the City of Copenhagen / Wonderful Copenhagen, we look forward to welcoming the world to a true celebration of running in the heart of Copenhagen,&rdquo; said Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.

Celebration across three distances 
The whole championship weekend will be a true running celebration. After the finish line, runners will gather with friends and family in the big and festive Runners Area in F&aelig;lledparken.
&ldquo;We know from experience how important it is to have a central gathering space for these events. The Runners Area will be the beating heart of the World Championships, buzzing with activities, music, food and drink stalls, and an incredible atmosphere across both days,&rdquo; said Head of Events at Sparta Athletics &amp; Running, Lars Nissen.
Entries for the Half Marathon sold out earlier this year via lottery. However, registration is still open for the 5 km and One Mile races, both held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, on festive and intense courses through &Oslash;sterbro.

5km and One Mile registration is open

6-20 March 2025, you can sign up for the lottery to secure one of the highly coveted tickets for the half marathon distance at the World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26.&nbsp;
A total of 35,000 runners will be ready on the start line when the world half marathon champions are crowned in Copenhagen on 20 September 2026. The best runners on the planet will lead the way, followed closely by runners of all levels, who will experience an extraordinary race on a packed and festive route through the Danish capital.
For the first time ever in Denmark, tickets will be allocated via a lottery system, similar to international marathons like those in London and Berlin.
The reason behind this, according to Dorte Vibjerg, CEO of Sparta Athletics &amp; Running:
"Most recently, during the sale of Copenhagen Half Marathon 2025, we saw an overwhelming demand that put a strain on our systems, selling out in just 2.5 hours while many runners were still waiting in the queue. That process was frustrating for both us and the participants, which is why we are introducing the lottery," she explains and continues:
"The lottery ensures a fair and equal chance for everyone. Interested runners now have plenty of time to sign up whenever it suits them, as the chances of being selected are the same regardless of when you enter during the lottery period, March 6-20."

<li>Can I enter the lottery multiple times? No. After the lottery period ends all entries will be scanned. If duplicate entries are found all orders containing the given person will be deleted.</li>

When the world elite arrives in Copenhagen to compete for gold in the half marathon, 5km and one mile distances, up to 65,000 runners will follow in their footsteps on flat, fast and festive courses that showcase the very best of what Copenhagen has to offer.
And the organisers are pulling out all the stops to create an extraordinary running festival, bringing together up to 65,000 runners and accompanying spectators.
&ldquo;The 2026 World Championships will bring the best runners on the planet to Copenhagen, and we are excited to give both Copenhageners and visitors an unforgettable weekend. An international running celebration awaits For the half marathon, up to 35,000 runners will join the absolute world elite for a thrilling run past many of Copenhagen&rsquo;s most iconic and beloved locations.
&ldquo;When 35,000 runners take off for the Half Marathon World Championships, it won&rsquo;t just be an incredible thrill for each individual runner and the thousands of spectators along the course &ndash; it will be an exceptional international running celebration of historic proportions.&rdquo;
The half marathon course is the same as that of the Copenhagen Half Marathon in 2024 and 2025, and for good reason:

A lottery for the first time in Denmark Although lotteries are common for major international races in cities like London and Berlin, this is the first time a race in Denmark will be sold via a lottery. The reason, according to Sparta&rsquo;s CEO, is high demand:
&ldquo;When the sale for Copenhagen Half Marathon 2025 opened, the demand was overwhelming, systems struggled to keep up, and all entries sold out in just 2.5 hours leaving many still waiting in line. Epic 5km and one mile courses While the half marathon takes place on Sunday 20 September, the 5km and one mile World Championships will be held the day before, on Saturday 19 September.&nbsp;
F&aelig;lledparken will once again be the hub of an exciting festival atmosphere for both runners and spectators, whether they are competing or cheering on the ultra-fast World Championships distances.
On the one mile course, runners will be propelled down &Oslash;sterbrogade, pass a high-energy power zone at Trianglen, and race toward the finish line past Parken Stadium.

Six world champions and 65,000 runners just behind them. In September 2026, the heart of Copenhagen is expected to be the stage for Denmark&rsquo;s largest-ever participant event. The World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26 will take place on September 19-20, 2026. A total of 65,000 participants will join the running festivities behind the world's fastest female and male athletes competing in the Half Marathon, 5K, and One Mile distances.
"It is truly unique that both the world elite and recreational runners can participate in a world championship in the streets of Copenhagen. Everyone Can Participate in the World Championships Due to overwhelming demand in the recent year, participation in the half marathon distance will be sold via a lottery system open from March 6-20, 2025. Interested runners can sign up during this period, after which a draw will determine who receives race bibs. Registration for the 5K and One Mile distances will open for general sale at a later date.

Largest ever: 65,000 runners can participate in the World Championships in Copenhagen

The world&rsquo;s best runners will compete for the most prestigious championship titles when the World Athletics Road Running Championships in the half marathon, 5 km, and the legendary One Mile take place in Copenhagen in 2026. A dynamic design and an open invitation to runners of all levels aim to ensure sold-out start numbers and an iconic running celebration in the streets. This will be the largest championship ever held in Denmark by participant numbers: 65,000. &ldquo;Create a visual identity and a communication concept that resonates with the global elite, the new recreational runner, and everyone in between.&rdquo; That was essentially the brief given when the championship organizers first met with design partners Norgram and T for Troels. The project had several fixed requirements: The event is formally organized for the international athletics federation, World Athletics, which has a strict set of design guidelines. For instance, the championship logo must be developed within the framework of World Athletics&rsquo; characteristic fan shape.

Danish design traditions with an international touch &ldquo;Within these constraints, it was important for us to create a logo that stylistically draws from Danish design traditions while clearly referencing the event. That&rsquo;s why we landed on a logo created from three lines, each symbolizing the significance of the three race distances,&rdquo; explains Mathias H&oslash;st Normark from the design agency Norgram.
He elaborates on the balance between tradition and innovation: &ldquo;We have strived to merge Danish design traditions with the grandeur of a world championship while daring to challenge and push the limits within World Athletics&rsquo; strict design framework. Therefore, we have developed a code-based format that functions as a generator, dynamically manipulating images and videos to give the identity impact and cohesion.&rdquo; 
&lsquo;It must have taken a long time to write something so simple&rsquo; The championship event has a clear and compelling verbal identity. The key messages are broad, given the diverse target audiences &ndash; ranging from &lsquo;You are qualified,&rsquo; an open invitation to runners of all levels and ages, to &lsquo;Fail another day,&rsquo; which sets the stage for the elite competitors. &ldquo;This is one of those projects where the right solution only emerges after thorough strategic considerations and many long creative hours. How do you create something that captures both the awe-inspiring world championship and a nearly universal invitation to participate? Without missing the mark on either? When we presented the identity to World Athletics, particularly the core message &lsquo;6 World Champions. 65,000 runners-up,&rsquo; they immediately responded with &lsquo;It must have taken a long time to write something so simple.&rsquo; From that point, the process flowed with good vibes,&rdquo; says Troels N&oslash;rlem from the agency T for Troels.

 A major strength for the event Sparta Athletics &amp; Running collaborated with Norgram and T for Troels, who were the obvious partner choices &ndash; not only because of their expertise and references but also because they developed the identities for the Copenhagen Marathon and the Copenhagen Half Marathon. The latter will be replaced in 2026 by the championship version, making it crucial that there is a clear connection between the championship identity and the recurring half marathon event.
&ldquo;Norgram and Troels N&oslash;rlem have truly succeeded in capturing the essence and duality of the championship, ensuring that the identity elegantly encompasses both the iconic atmosphere and the inclusive invitation. It is crucial for us to clearly reflect the seriousness of our championship hosting and execution while also reaching beyond the core running community so that new runners find their way into the running community and become part of this fantastic event.
