On the streets of Belgrade, more than 1.600 buses are driven every day, but there are a few of them that attract our citizens’ attention recently. Not only are they “dressed” in colours of the World Athletics Indoor Championships which will be held in our city from 18 to 20 March but their passengers are – a plum and a raspberry!
They are mascots of the biggest sporting event this year in our capital. A raspberry is a synonym for tasty and beautiful, one of the symbols of Serbia, it is also known as red gold while a plum is an irreplaceable fruit and is part of Serbian culture.
On the bus line 31, that goes every day from Konjarnik to Students Square, today everything has gone in athletic rhythm. Among those who were delighted for the upcoming World Championships was a bus driver Miroslav Jovanic who is in this business for almost 20 years.
After helping the raspberry and plum to sit comfortably on the bus and be driven safely in the GSP system, he announced that he would love to enjoy the athletics bravado of the biggest competitors from all around the world with a few colleagues who also love this sport.
“I am happy that we will again send a nice picture from Belgrade and show what kind of hosts we are. I am happy that the City Traffic as well contributes to the promotion of the World Championships that I have already bought the tickets for. I want to watch Ivana Spanovic, my favourite athlete, and Asmir Kolasinac because I want to be part of the moment when they break records and the world results in their own country. That is something that does not happen so often. Mascots are also fun, and just like raspberries and plums are the pride of Serbia, so will be our competitors” – Miroslav said.
The World Athletics Indoor Championships will take place at the Arena, from 18 to 20 March, when Serbia and the City of Belgrade will host more than 1000 athletes, coaches and officials from more than 150 countries. The biggest names, the queen of sport’s aces from all meridians will fight for the world champion titles. Among them, there will be the world record holder in pole vault Armand Duplantis, the world champion in 1500m Sifan Hassan, the bronze medail winner at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 400 hurdles Femke Bol, double Olympic gold medailist and the world record holder in shot put Ryan Crouser.
