Each time Neeraj Chopra gets on the runway of a global championship, he takes down a slice of history. And it was no different in the men&rsquo;s javelin final on the last day of the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23.
With his first legal throw of the evening (88.17m), which he secured on his second attempt after fouling on his first, the 25-year-old became the first athlete from India to strike gold in any event at the World Athletics Championships. He is also the first Asian athlete to win gold in the men&rsquo;s javelin, with his medal being his country&rsquo;s only one in Budapest.
Coming to the championships, the Olympic champion, who had experienced a bit of a disrupted season and was still trying to adapt to his technique, was not the farthest thrower.
That position belonged to Czechia&rsquo;s Jakub Vadlejch, who was making his fourth appearance in a World Championships final, and was arguably the most experienced thrower in the field, having claimed silver in 2017 in London, and a bronze in Oregon.
The 32-year-old showed he was still in top form, starting the competition with a season&rsquo;s best of 89.51m set in Finland.
His javelin landed at 82.59m in the first round to give him the lead, but was pushed to second place when Oliver Helander recorded a superior mark of 83.38m in the same round. However, the Finnish athlete, who was eighth in Oregon, couldn&rsquo;t better that distance, eventually succumbing to three fouls, and then registering marks of 81.44m and 82.85m, respectively.
The reverse was the case for Vadlejch, who recorded 84.18m on his second attempt to take him back to the top. However, his reign was short-lived, overtaken by the Indian athlete who charged down the runway, hauling his javelin 88.17m &ndash; a season's best &ndash; to top the pack.
Germany's Julian Weber then recorded a decent throw of 85.30m, displacing the Czech thrower from the top three. It was to be his best effort of the evening, though, and the 28-year-old had to settle for another fourth-place position, the same as in Oregon.
Commonwealth Games champion Arshad Nadeem, who hadn&rsquo;t competed all season as he returned after a long rehab process following elbow surgery late last year, recorded a big one in the third round.
The 26-year-old, who has a personal best of 90.18m which he secured in Birmingham last year, threw 87.82m to instantly propel himself to second place. His next effort was also a big one but it fell 67cm shy of his previous throw.
Vadlejch bounced back into reckoning in the fifth round with a hurl of 86.67m, taking him to third position.
Chopra, who had two more of his teammates in the field &ndash; the first time in history for India &ndash; tried to throw farther but his subsequent throws landed at 86.32m, 84.64m, 87.73m and 83.98m. His compatriots Kishore Jena (84.77m) and DP Manu (84.14m) placed fifth and sixth at the end of the day.
And although his winning distance was 60cm shy of his silver medal-winning mark from Oregon, Chopra was just relieved to have taken the gold this time around.
&ldquo;This was great. After the Olympic gold, I really wanted to win the World Championships," he said. "I just wanted to throw farther. This is brilliant for the national team, but it was my dream to win gold at the World Championships.
"This has been a great championships for India, and I am proud to bring another title to my country. I wanted to throw more than 90 metres tonight but it needs all parts of the puzzle to be there. I couldn't put it all together this evening. Maybe next time.&rdquo;
Last year in Oregon, the 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist became only the second Indian to win a World Championships medal of any colour after claiming silver behind Grenada&rsquo;s Anderson Peters, following in the footsteps of Anju Bobby George who scooped the bronze medal in the women&rsquo;s long jump in 2003.
Chopra wasn&rsquo;t the only one to make history in the men&rsquo;s javelin. Nadeem&rsquo;s silver becomes Pakistan&rsquo;s first ever World Championships medal, making it an emotional night for the Olympic finalist in Tokyo.
&ldquo;It's a really emotional day for me and my family and country&rdquo;, he said. &ldquo;I'm over the moon. I hope I could make my country proud. I was in very good shape and I was confident. This silver medal means a lot to me and it motivates me to earn a better result at the Olympic Games. I will do everything I can in order to be the hero of Pakistan at the Olympics.&rdquo;
Vadlejch has no plans of slowing down, even as his search for a global gold medal continues.
&ldquo;This result is a big motivation for me to continue the hard work," he said. "I am still more and more hungry for medals, and I want to win some gold ones, too. I think it was quite obvious that it was not my day today. I struggled with technique a bit but I am proud that I managed to fight to the very end."

Chopra back on top with historic gold for India in men's javelin

Ukraine&rsquo;s Yaroslava Mahuchikh now has a global outdoor high jump medal of every colour as she soared to gold in the final field event action of the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 on Sunday (27).
The 21-year-old claimed the world indoor title in Belgrade last year &ndash; her first senior major international title &ndash; after becoming a world silver medallist in Doha in 2019 and an Olympic bronze medallist in Tokyo three years later. She went on to secure another silver in Oregon last year, finishing behind Australia&rsquo;s Eleanor Patterson, but this time she turned the tables with a near faultless performance that was topped by a 2.01m clearance.
The 2017 world U18 champion went on to attempt a would-be PB of 2.07m but was unsuccessful with her three attempts. Defending champion Patterson, who sustained a foot injury during warm up at a competition in February, returned to medal-winning form with a 1.99m clearance to secure the silver on countback.
Her compatriot Nicola Olyslagers, the Olympic silver medallist, also cleared 1.99m for bronze.
&ldquo;I am so proud to win this gold for my country,&rdquo; said Mahuchikh. &ldquo;Silvers from Doha and Eugene definitely were not enough for me. I have been one of the best woman high jumpers over the last few years and I badly wanted to become the best in the world officially.&rdquo;
She managed an impressive series in order to achieve that goal.
Mahuchikh and Olyslagers entered the competition at 1.90m and cleared that height at the first time of asking, as did Patterson and Ukraine&rsquo;s Iryna Gerashchenko, who opened their campaigns with first-time clearances at 1.85m.
After 10 athletes managed 1.90m on their first tries, just three &ndash; Patterson, Jamaica's Lamara Distin and Gerashchenko &ndash; achieved the same as the bar moved to 1.94m, while Mahuchikh and Olyslagers went clear on their second tries. After a scare at 1.90m, which she needed all three attempts to clear, Germany&rsquo;s Christina Honsel also got over 1.94m on her second try, as did Serbia&rsquo;s 18-year-old Angelina Topic, the world U20 and European senior bronze medallist. Britain&rsquo;s Morgan Lake made it eight to progress to 1.97m, soaring over 1.94m on her third go.
Mahuchikh and Olyslagers remained neck and neck, both clearing 1.97m on their first attempts. Patterson was next, making it on her third go for a season&rsquo;s best, and then Lake joined them, brushing the bar but not enough to make it fall.
Mahuchikh got another first-time clearance at 1.99m, as did Patterson, and Olyslagers and Lake both remained in the fight as the bar moved to 2.01m. For Lake it was a gamble, as she passed her final attempt at 1.99m to try a bar higher. She had a good go, but the bar fell and her fourth-place finish was confirmed.
This next height decided the medals. Mahuchikh soared clear over 2.01m on her second try and that ultimately got her the gold as Patterson and then Olyslagers both failed all three tries.
&ldquo;Before every single one of my jumps tonight I said to myself that I had to win gold,&rdquo; added Mahuchikh. &ldquo;Only gold. For all my team that believes in me. For my family, for my father who could not come here to support me, but I felt his energy despite hundreds of kilometres between us. I had to win this gold for my country and all Ukrainian people who are still fighting for peace in Ukraine and for our independence. Thanks to them we have this unique possibility to compete at the international arena and to raise our flag.
&ldquo;Physically and mentally, I was prepared to jump 2.05m and higher. That is why I tried 2.07m - a new national record. I had two very close attempts, but, if not tonight, then maybe somewhere on the Diamond League circuit.
&ldquo;I received a crown from one of my British fans after my victory. Maybe I am looking a bit like a princess, but I can allow myself to be a princess for a few hours. Tomorrow we will start the next stage of our preparation. I am looking forward to getting another title from the Olympics in Paris.&rdquo;
Given all she has been through, Patterson was also delighted with her medal.
&ldquo;This silver feels like gold to me,&rdquo; said the 27-year-old. &ldquo;I am overwhelmed tonight. Obviously, Mahuchikh was incredible.
&ldquo;The last six months have been so tough. I broke my foot, so to come here and win silver is special. I am proud of myself as it has been a chaotic journey.&rdquo;

Mahuchikh completes global medal set with high jump gold in Budapest 

Femke Bol, who fell face-down a couple of metres short of securing Dutch victory in the mixed 4x400m on the opening night of these World Championships, produced the reverse effect in the final track race as her astounding finish earned women&rsquo;s 4x400m gold for the Netherlands.
The 23-year-old, who won the women&rsquo;s 400m hurdles title on Thursday, took over the baton on the last leg a couple of metres behind the Jamaican and British last-leg runners, Stacey Ann Williams and Nicole Yeargin, and by the back straight the gap between her and the leader was about 10 metres.
As the medal contenders reached the home straight, victory seemed destined for the Jamaicans, who had qualified fastest in 3:22.74, the fastest time recorded this season, and had supplemented their quartet with Candice McLeod, seventh in the individual 400m final, and Janieve Russell, seventh in the 400m hurdles final, both of whom won Olympic 4x400m bronze in Tokyo.
But the crowd noise rose as Bol&rsquo;s late charge looked likely to earn silver instead of bronze. She duly passed Yeargin 30 metres from the line before sending the decibel level up still further by overtaking Williams in the final two strides &ndash; a significant section of track for her &ndash; to bring the baton home in 3:20.72.
Jamaica took silver in 3:20.88, with Britain taking bronze in 3:21.04.
&ldquo;The first three legs went so well, I felt like I had to finish as strongly as I could,&rdquo; Bol said. &ldquo;I wanted to stay patient, but in the last metres I said 'No, we have to take it'.&nbsp;
&ldquo;It was one of my most important runs ever, but it is the first time we became world champions so it applies for all of us. Every tenth and hundredth of a second was needed. We had good exchanges and still barely won it.&rdquo;
Hurdles specialist Cathelijn Peeters, whose own third-leg efforts had been crucial for the Netherlands, added: &ldquo;To be honest, I was already happy with a bronze medal, then I realised we might win a silver, and was shocked at the end with the gold!&rdquo;
Yeargin commented: &ldquo;I was just trying to hold it and get us on to the podium. I knew Femke was coming, so I had to dig deep and give it all I've got. And that's what I did.&rdquo;
The Dutch had also altered their line-up, adding Lieke Klaver, who had finished fifth in the 400m final, to run the second leg, and she took over the baton from Eveline Saalberg behind Jamaica&rsquo;s Russell and Amber Anning of Britain, with Canada &ndash; unchanged from the heats &ndash; right behind her in the form of Aiyanna Stiverne.
Klaver&rsquo;s efforts meant that, after the second handover, her teammate Peeters, Jamaica&rsquo;s Nickisha Pryce and Britain&rsquo;s newly installed Ama Pipi set off virtually level.
As the Jamaicans and British pushed on, the question was: how much of a deficit would Bol take over for the final leg?
And as it turned out, the answer was: a manageable deficit, although it took supreme athleticism and determination for her to turn bronze into gold in the space of the last 30 metres.
Canada, anchored by Grace Konrad, finished fourth in 3:22:42 ahead of Belgium in 3:22.84.
The latter had hoped to bring in Cynthia Bolingo, fifth in the individual final, but she was unable to run because of a calf injury so instead Camille Laus arrived in place of Naomi Van Den Broeck.
Poland, anchored by 400m silver medallist Natalia Kaczmarek, finished sixth in 3:24.93, 0.05 ahead of Italy, with Ireland eighth in 3:27.08 and France, added to the final after being unfairly affected by the disqualified Nigerian team in their heat, last in 3:28.35.
A new champion in this event was certain after the United States &ndash; who have taken this title at the last three World Championships &ndash; were disqualified after coming home first in the second heat because of a final changeover between Quanera Hayes and Alexis Holmes which was not completed within the allowable zone.
There was some painful irony in this for Holmes, whose outstanding anchor leg in the opening day&rsquo;s mixed 4x400m relay had put Bol under such pressure that she fell.
There was thus a perfect symmetry to Bol&rsquo;s Budapest experience&hellip;

Femke Bol's astounding finish earned women’s 4x400m gold for the Netherlands

Bol turns relay grief into glory with her grandstand finish

A gold medal in hand is worth a lot to Jakob Ingebrigtsen who secured a fitting end to his World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 campaign with a successive defence of his 5000m title on the final day of competition.
The 22-year-old was left heartbroken after the 1500m, in which he was beaten by Great Britian&rsquo;s Josh Kerr. But the Norwegian picked himself up to advance through his 5000m heat &ndash; his first race of the year at that distance &ndash; and book his place in the final.
With four of the eight fastest men in history as part of the line-up &ndash; six of whom had broken 12:45 this year &ndash; it was an open and highly competitive field.
But Ingebrigtsen&rsquo;s race plan was simple: conserve his energy until the final lap and then make a dash for the finish line.
When the gun went off, Canada&rsquo;s Olympic silver medallist Mohammed Ahmed took the lead, setting the pace on the first two laps while the defending champion started out in the middle of the pack.
World U20 cross-country champion Ishmael Kipkurui soon grew impatient with the pace and sped past his rivals, quickly opening up 40-metre lead, which he maintained for the next few laps.
Uganda&rsquo;s Oscar Chelimo, the bronze medallist last year, made his way to the front of the chase pack, trying to bridge the gap to the young Kenyan. Ingebrigtsen, meanwhile, was near the back, showing no interest in making a move.
World leader Berihu Aregawi and his fellow Ethiopian Hagos Gebrhiwet, a two-time world medallist, took over at the lead, while the third Ethiopian in the line-up, two-time world indoor champion Yomif Kejelch, also moved towards the front. Guatemala&rsquo;s Luis Grijalva also tried to tuck himself into the race, but the Ethiopians were reluctant to let him play much of a part.
With about one lap to go, European record-holder Mohamed Katir overtook the Ethiopians, who were unable to respond to the Spaniard&rsquo;s speed. Ingebrigtsen also launched out, moving on to Katir&rsquo;s shoulder as the bell sounded.
The pair tore away from the rest of the field with the Spaniard leading, but the determined Norwegian out-kicked him just before the line to claim back-to-back golds in the event, crossing the line in a season&rsquo;s best of 13:11.30.
It was also an evening of redemption to for Katir, who failed to qualify for the 1500m final earlier in the championships, having earned bronze at the distance in Oregon. He was glad to make amends in the 5000m, crossing the line in 13:11.44 for silver.
Kenya&rsquo;s Jacob Krop, the silver medallist in Oregon, came through for bronze in 13:12.28 ahead of Grijalva who settled for fourth (13:12.50) for the second successive championships. Ethiopia&rsquo;s Kejelcha (13:12.51) and Gebrhiwet (13:12.65) placed fifth and sixth respectively, and Aregawi eighth, his third World Championships final without a medal.
&ldquo;To win another world title is great of course, but I was very tired,&rdquo; said Ingebrigtsen. &ldquo;I tried to save my energy to win at the end because that was the only way tonight. I knew that if my tactics were better than my competitors, I would have a chance to win. And that's what happened. It worked out absolutely perfectly. It was a very hard run, especially in the last 40-50 metres. It was great racing.
&ldquo;This title means a lot to me after losing again in the 1500m. I haven't been at my best but I had the motivation and I had great support.
&ldquo;My body is just getting over a virus so it's not been a very good situation to be in. At the same time, I wanted to do my best, I had to try. I had to be very patient but I really did not know what to expect from this race. This week was a bit bittersweet overall, but this is a good way to end.&rdquo;
Katir was frustrated to miss out on gold but still content with silver, earning Spain&rsquo;s only in-stadium medal of the championships.
&ldquo;I gave it all that I had today,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;But Jakob is Jakob &ndash; he is the best in the world nowadays. In the 1500m I could not get him, but in the 5000m I was really close to beating him. Every year, I am getting closer and closer.
Krop was delighted to make it on to another global podium.
&ldquo;I am still only 22 so to get two medals from the World Championships is a big honour,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t think this bronze after the silver in Eugene is a step down; I am still among the top runners over 5000m.&rdquo;

Jakob Ingebrigtsen secured a fitting end to his World Championships campaign with a successive defence of his 5000m title

Ingebrigtsen gains gold – and redemption – with 5000m title in Budapest

Bahrain&rsquo;s Winfred Mutile Yavi saw off the challenge posed by her more fancied rivals to win the women&rsquo;s 3000m steeplechase title at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 on Sunday (27), running 8:54.29 for the fifth-fastest time in history.
To many, there had been one big question ahead of the final: which Kenyan Chepkoech was going to have their name engraved on the gold medal?
Jackline or Beatrice? The supplementary query was whether any of the leading lights of the seven-and-a-half lap event could crash the party and make a name for themselves.
The form book pointed to Jackline. The 19-year-old won the Commonwealth Games title in Birmingham last year and smashed through the nine-minute barrier for the first time at the London Diamond League on 23 July, finishing almost seven seconds ahead of Beatrice in 8:57.35, a world lead.
As it transpired, in the heat of battle in Budapest, the teenager was never a contender and she finished ninth in 9:14.72.
While one Chepkoech passed through the race virtually unnoticed, the other grabbed it by the scruff of the neck.
Beatrice set off looking something like the woman who set the world record of 8:44.32 in Monaco in 2018, and who followed up with World Championships gold in 2019.
Such was the 32-year-old&rsquo;s relentless pace, only Yavi could stay in touch &ndash; and, even then, the Bahraini was always some two metres behind. Until the penultimate lap, that is.
Fourth in the previous two World Championships finals, Yavi was not going to miss her chance to finally make it on to the podium as a winner. She steadily closed the gap, then overtook Beatrice at the bell and forged ahead.
The 23-year-old crossed the finish line in 8:54.29, not just eclipsing the younger Chepkoech&rsquo;s 2023 world lead but moving to fourth on the world all-time list.
The elder Chepkoech was more than four seconds down, clocking 8:58.98 for silver. Her Kenyan teammate, the 19-year-old world U20 champion Faith Cherotich, comfortably won the race for bronze in 9:00.69 &ndash; a first podium finish in the event by a teenager. &nbsp;
Next home and finishing fourth in 9:05.51 was Zerfe Wondemagegn, the Ethiopian who gained world U20 silver behind Cherotich last year. France&rsquo;s European indoor 3000m silver medallist Alice Finot was fifth in 9:06.15, with Slovenia&rsquo;s Marusa Mismas Zrimsek sixth in 9:06.37.
&ldquo;It was a fast race but I did not realise it was that fast. I knew I would have the power on the last lap. It was perfect,&rdquo; said Yavi.
&ldquo;I have never felt like this before. I worked hard and I am grateful for this amazing achievement.
&ldquo;After finishing fourth at the past two World Championships, the gold medal gives me additional motivation to train hard.&rdquo;
Beatrice Chepkoech was a happy woman, too.
&ldquo;This silver feels like gold to me,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;The last few years have been tough due to injury. Coming back is something special for me.
&ldquo;It has been hard. Since the Tokyo Olympics I have been struggling and I thought I might never come back but tonight proves I am still strong.&rdquo;
As for Cherotich, the bronze medallist reflected: &ldquo;Nine minutes is a fantastic time. I know I am in shape to go under nine minutes. It is very possible.
&ldquo;Last year I won the world U20 title and I worked hard to make the Kenyan team for Budapest. It's my debut at the senior World Championships, but I did not worry. The feeling is pretty much the same I had a year ago as a junior. It is a huge responsibility to represent your country.
&ldquo;I am very surprised to know that I am the first teenager who got a medal at the World Championships in women's steeplechase. Now I am looking forward to being highly prepared for the Olympics.
&ldquo;Why not? Everything is possible for people who believe in themselves.&rdquo;

Yavi runs 8:54.29 for the fifth-fastest time in history

Yavi makes a splash with steeplechase gold in Budapest

Sometimes a country&rsquo;s depth in a particular event doesn&rsquo;t necessarily translate to a strong relay performance.
But other times &ndash; like for tonight&rsquo;s men&rsquo;s 4x400m final &ndash; it leads to pure domination.
The USA went in as the favourites and duly delivered their fourth relay gold of the championships, winning in a world-leading 2:57.31.
French athletics fans breathed a huge sigh of relief as their quartet came through to take silver &ndash; their first and only medal of the championships &ndash; in a national record of 2:58.45, holding off Great Britain (2:58.71).
As far as the race went, it was USA all the way. Quincy Hall, the 400m bronze medallist earlier in the week, gave them an early lead, handing over to Vernon Norwood, the fourth-place finisher in the 400m final.
By the half-way point, they already had a comfortable lead over the rest of the field, all of whom were battling for the front of the chasing pack.
Justin Robinson, who was part of the victorious mixed 4x400m quartet on the first day of the championships, maintained USA&rsquo;s led on leg three. By this point, France had moved into second place from Great Britain with Jamaica and Botswana in close pursuit.
Rai Benjamin, the 400m hurdles bronze medallist, extended USA&rsquo;s lead on the last leg and went on to cross the line first in 2:57.31, earning USA&rsquo;s ninth gold medal in the men&rsquo;s 4x400m from the past 10 editions of the championships.
France&rsquo;s anchor leg runner Teo Andant ran a strong lap to maintain his country&rsquo;s standing in the race, taking silver in 2:58.45.
At one point it looked as though Antonio Watson, the individual 400m champion, would move Jamaica into a medal position, but Britain&rsquo;s Rio Mitcham held on to third place, crossing the line in 2:58.71. Watson brought Jamaica home fourth in 2:59.34.
India, who had challenged USA in the heats, didn&rsquo;t quite feature in the medal hunt and placed fifth in 2:59.92.
&ldquo;I felt like I wasn't moving that fast but I'm happy these guys got me in a position to bring it home,&rdquo; said Benjamin. &ldquo;After the 400m hurdles, I wanted to come back and anchor this relay. It means a lot that the guys have faith in me and trust me. Quincy had an amazing start and the rest of the boys finished strong. I just had to finish the race. It was team work.&rdquo;

Sometimes a country’s depth in a particular event doesn’t necessarily translate to a strong relay performance. But other times – like for tonight’s men’s 4x400m final – it leads to pure domination.

USA dominates men’s 4x400m to win fourth relay gold in Budapest

A vividly exuberant Mary Moraa held off attacks from Keely Hodgkinson and Athing Mu to claim her first global gold in the women&rsquo;s 800m on the final day of the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23.
Britain&rsquo;s Hodgkinson managed to beat USA&rsquo;s Mu, who had pipped her to Olympic and world titles in the past two years, but this time both finished behind Kenya&rsquo;s Moraa, who ran the race of her life and then skipped over the line to win in a personal best of 1:56.03.
Mu, who before these championships had raced just once over this distance since winning gold in Oregon last year ahead of Hodgkinson and Moraa, led at the bell and into the finishing straight.&nbsp;
But as the trio pressed for the line, the US star came under pressure from both sides as her fellow 21-year-old Hodgkinson, so set on ending her run of victories, challenged on the inside, while Moraa, who beat the Briton to Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham last year, charged on the outside.&nbsp;
Something had to give, and in the end it wasn&rsquo;t the mercurial 23-year-old Kenyan, who greeted her victory by jumping and veering like a freed colt, her ponytail jolting behind her like a mane, before getting down to the serious business of dancing.&nbsp;
Hodgkinson, calm and controlled as ever, earned a significant silver in 1:56.34, with the enigmatic Mu having to settle for a medal of unfamiliar colour as she took third place in 1:56.61.&nbsp;
It was a season&rsquo;s best for her; but then she only had one time to beat.&nbsp;
The manner in which Moraa beat Britain&rsquo;s newly established world silver medallist on her home soil in Birmingham last year was uniquely random - the Kenyan began at the front and went all the way to the back again before reversing the effect and coming through for unexpected and unheralded gold.&nbsp;
Here, however, she ran an exemplary race, staying within range of Mu throughout before striking for home halfway down the finishing straight as the US runner, who had done very well to qualify after nearly being knocked off her feet by a falling runner in her semifinal, failed to find anything extra when she most needed it.&nbsp;
For Hodgkinson, whose transit from top class junior to top class senior in Tokyo was so swift and impressive, the occasion was bittersweet. One rival vanquished; another not.&nbsp;
While the focus was on this hugely talented trio, the rest of the field produced results of the highest quality as all eight finished inside two minutes.&nbsp;
Mu&rsquo;s compatriot Raevyn Rogers, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist, finished fourth in a season&rsquo;s best of 1:57.45, one place ahead of the Briton who was fourth in Tokyo, Jemma Reekie, who put herself in a good position to win without finding the means to make it happen, coming home in 1:57.72.&nbsp;
In what was a super-swift final, Mu&rsquo;s other teammate Nia Akins was sixth in a personal best of 1:57.73, with Jamaica&rsquo;s Adelle Tracey seventh in 1:58.41, also a personal best, and the Doha 2019 world champion Halimah Nakaayi of Uganda eighth in 1:59.18.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I am pleased to get the gold this time and become the world champion,&rdquo; said Moraa. &ldquo;After bronze last year I wanted to improve and I have. Everyone in the final was so fast, I knew I would have to have a fast finish. I came from a long way behind but I managed to do it.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&ldquo;Since last year, me and my coach have been talking and working a lot, changing some things. My coach is kind of a role model to me, and this is why I have shown such confidence this season.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Hodgkinson commented: &ldquo;I put myself in a position to attack. I thought I was going to come through on the inside but the line came up sooner than I thought.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
&ldquo;It was always going to be tough. It was different positions to last year but I have another silver, at least. I'm sure the gold will be mine one of these years. The fact I ran 55 seconds for the last lap shows I am moving into new territory. That's something to build on.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Mu added: &ldquo;I tried to keep up with the group and at the right time I was able to move forward. I wanted to slow the pace a little bit since I knew it would be a killer finish. Then I saw I was overtaken and from that point I just wanted to finish on the podium.
&ldquo;I came here to Budapest with no big expectations and now I am really grateful for this wonderful bronze medal.&rdquo;&nbsp;

Moraa dances with delight after fierce 800m fight in Budapest

Despite the heat, the Heroes' Run was very well attended, starting immediately after the men's marathon of the World Athletics Championships. To ensure the safety of the runners, the organisers shortened the distance to 5.7 km. Ireland's David McCarthy was the fastest to complete the course, while Portugal's Vanessa Carvalho finished first among the women. A total of 6,000 participants from 70 countries took part in the Heroes' Run, including a true sporting legend, Olympic, world, and multiple European champion Rosa Mota.
Thousands of runners gathered on Andrassy Avenue for the Heroes' Run, a historic event as the world's first running race held immediately after the marathon leg of a World Athletics Championships. Runners started from the same point and finished in the same location where world-class athletes had competed for victory just minutes earlier.

Two race distances were initially announced: 2023 metres and 10 km, but due to the heat, the 10 km race was shortened to 5750 metres as a safety precaution.
Over 4,000 determined runners participated in the 5.7 km race, including both amateur and seasoned athletes. Notable participants included the Seoul Olympic champion Rosa Mota, who is also a world and multiple European champion.
In the men's race, Ireland's David McCarthy emerged as the winner, with Germany's Simon St&uuml;tzel and G&aacute;sp&aacute;r Csere following closely behind. In the women's race, Portugal's Vanessa Carvalho took the top spot, ahead of Casey Monoszlay from the USA and Emy Thor&eacute;n from Sweden. The 2023-meter distance race was won by Enikő Lasku, while Spain's Garcia Alvaro Martinez secured victory in the men's category.

It was the experience of a lifetime: not only did the runners start from the same point and finish in the same location as the professionals, but they also enjoyed the same enthusiastic support from the fans. Along the course, thousands of spectators cheered on the participants.
"The Heroes' Run was a fitting conclusion to the World Athletics Championships road races, a beautiful culmination of the power of a world competition to promote recreational sports. For this unforgettable experience, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us at Heroes' Square today and either ran, jogged, or walked the distance. We congratulate and are immensely proud of all the participants," said Bal&aacute;zs N&eacute;meth, CEO of Budapest 2023 Nzrt, the organiser of the World Championships.
The special experience was further enhanced by unique souvenirs, with all participants receiving a medal and a custom-made ASICS running T-shirt, as well as a finishing package at the end of the race.

A real celebration: 6,000 runners from 70 countries competed in the Heroes' Run

In the end, as he approached the finishing curve in the sunbathed Heroes&rsquo; Square, Victor Kiplangat could afford to snatch his national flag and savour his golden moment at the end of the men&rsquo;s marathon on the morning of the final day of action at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23.
For the second time in Budapest, Uganda had a world-beating hero to acclaim, Joshua Cheptegei having claimed the men&rsquo;s 10,000m crown on the track on day two. Add in Jacob Kiplimo&rsquo;s victory at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst in February, and the former third force of East African distance running could celebrate a hattrick of global successes in 2023.
Kiplangat hit the gold standard on the international scene at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year. Twelve months on, inspired by Kiplimo, the 23-year-old proved a class apart from the rest of the world, breaking clear from Ethiopia&rsquo;s Leul Gebresilase with 3km to go and crossing the line in 2:08:53.
The winning margin was 26 seconds and it was Israel&rsquo;s Maru Teferi who claimed the silver, overtaking the tiring Gebresilase on the finishing curve to finish runner up in 2:09:12. In doing so, the 31-year-old &ndash; who was outsprinted for European gold by Germany&rsquo;s Richard Ringer in Munich last year &ndash; was rewarded for a turbo-charged recovery after suffering a spectacular fall with 10km to go.
Gebresilase had to settle for bronze in 2:09:19, a disappointment for Ethiopia, who finished first and second in Doha in 2019 and in Oregon last year. His teammate Tamarit Tola, the decisive winner on the Oregon trail, was in the hunt until fading at 33km and eventually dropping out.
After Gebresilase came Lesotho's Tebello Ramakongoana, fourth in a PB 2:09:57, and then Kiplangat&rsquo;s Ugandan teammate Stephen Kissa, who recovered from a fall of his own to finish fifth in 2:10:22.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&ldquo;This has been my dream and it has come true at last,&rdquo; said Kiplangat, the second Ugandan to take the title, following Stephen Kiprotich&rsquo;s success in Moscow in 2013.
&ldquo;Last year I was Commonwealth Games champion and that made me think this year I must become world champion. Now my prayers have been answered and hopefully next year in Paris I will become Olympic champion too.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&ldquo;It was hard today because it was so hot but I felt comfortable because I prepared well for this weather. I knew it was possible because I had trained well. It was a dream and a mission and I did it today.&nbsp;
&ldquo;When I reached 30km I knew I felt strong and decided to push. I had great energy and that allowed me to go. Then at 35km I could surge again. That was always my plan and I managed to do it.
&ldquo;I need to thank Jacob Kiplimo. He has given me a lot of motivation and inspired me with his performances. I am so grateful as well for his advice and guidance. Without that, I couldn't have won today.&rdquo;
Without picking himself up so smartly, and moving directly into overdrive, the terrific Teferi would not have claimed a silver medal lining.
&ldquo;I am glad I managed to fulfil my dream,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I fell down and tore my vest but I tried to move on to finish the race in the best possible condition.&rdquo;&nbsp;
At the start of the race, Ser-Od Bat-Ochir set out like a bat out of hell. The 41-year-old Mongolian powered through the opening 1km in 2:57 and hit 3km in 8:55, 2:05 pace, building up a lead of 27 seconds.&nbsp;
The most experienced campaigner in the 83-man field, Bat-Ochir was competing in his 11th straight World Championships marathon, his debut having come in Paris when he was a sprightly 21-year-old back in 2003.&nbsp;
With a highest placing of 19th, in Daegu in 2011, and having finished 26th in Oregon a year ago, Bat-Ochir was never going to maintain his punishing early pace. His lifetime best of 2:08:50 dates back to 2014, his best this year being a more modest 2:24:46.
His determination could not be doubted. To acclimatise to cooler conditions for the Olympic marathon in London in 2012, he moved his family to the north-east of England for a year, training at Morpeth Harriers with some guidance from the great Jim Alder, winner of the Commonwealth Games marathon in 1966 and holder of the world track best for two hours since 1964.
Bat-Ochir kept his foot on the gas for a little while yet, passing 5km in 14:59, 35 seconds clear of Tola. Thereafter, however, the pace started to take its toll.
By 8km, his lead was down to 15 seconds and just past 9km he was swallowed by the pack of major players, with Kenya&rsquo;s Timothy Kiplagat in the vanguard.&nbsp;Second in Rotterdam in April, the Kenyan led through 10km with a three-second advantage, but chose not to push on.
Bat-Ochir started to pay the price for his bold effort. After passing 10km, he ground to a halt, clutching his right hamstring, stretching it out and starting again. Not that he was going to do a Sifan Hassan. After another couple of stops and re-starts, he hobbled off the course for good at 12km.
Meanwhile, back at the sharp end, Kenya&rsquo;s Joshua Belet led through 15km in 46:09, upping the pace to match Bat-Ochir&rsquo;s opening kilometre split of 2:57.
There were 30 men still in the lead pack at halfway, with Rwanda&rsquo;s John Hakizimana at the front in 1:05:02. A surge from Kiplangat at a drinks station, however, succeeded in splintering the group.
Approaching 30km, Kiplangat injected a 2:54 split, drawing Tola towards the front for the first time.
The pack was down to six approaching Heroes&rsquo; Square for the penultimate time, then five when Kissa tripped and fell after clipping Kiplangat&rsquo;s heels.
Then it was down to three: Kiplangat, Tola and Gebresilase. The Ugandan kept his foot down and just after 33km Tola started to drop.
After a split of 2:49, the fastest of the race, it was Kiplangat vs Gebresilase, Tola fading out of contention.
Kiplangat hammered away at the front, Gebresilase in his immediate slipstream, until the pressure finally told with 3km remaining. The Commonwealth Games champion opened a gap that swiftly grew into an unassailable one and&nbsp;Teferi also passed&nbsp;Gebresilase in the closing stages to secure the silver.
Uganda&rsquo;s global distance running hattrick was securely in the bag.

Kiplangat's marathon victory completes golden 2023 treble for Uganda

The battle for supremacy in the women&rsquo;s 5000m was going to be a spectacular showdown between world record-holder Faith Kipyegon, Olympic champion Sifan Hassan and the defending champion Gudaf Tsegay.
Each of those three contenders had competed in at least one other event in Budapest, but this was going to be a final race for all three, a tactical one at that, and they each had a point to prove.
They also had to contend with a fourth strong competitor: world cross-country champion Beatrice Chebet.
The heats, which had taken place three days earlier, had given only a glimpse of what was to come. Chebet, the silver medallist from Oregon, and Tsegay had finished 1-2 in heat one, while Hassan pipped Kipyegon on the line in heat two.
Unlike the heats, Tsegay &ndash; who was unbeaten this year and already claimed the 10,000m title earlier on in Budapest &ndash; hit the front from the beginning of the final, taking the lead for the first two laps to control the race.
Her Ethiopian teammate Ejgayehu Taye, the 10,000m bronze medallist, took over on the third lap, while Kipyegon found her way to third place, then started to dictate the pace of the race, her compatriots Chebet and Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi also positioning themselves near the front.
Moving from her signature position at the back, Hassan came through from the outside to stay on the shoulder of her Kenyan rival who had already beaten her in the 1500m a few days prior.
As the bell went off, Kipyegon started to unleash her trademark kick, with Hassan hard on her heels while Chebet followed closely in pursuit of a top-three finish as she went past a tiring Tsegay.
With 180 metres to go, Kipyegon switched gears, accelerating to a brilliant finish to drive down the line in 14:53.88, with Hassan coming through for silver in 14:54.11. Chebet took bronze in 14:54.33, nearly two seconds faster than her teammate Kipkemboi who settled for fourth.
Tsegay was a distant 13th (15:01.13). Taye was the first Ethiopian to finish, placing fifth in 14:56.85.
Kipyegon&rsquo;s victory makes her the first woman to win gold in the 15000m and 5000m at the World Championships. Even more incredible is the fact that she had only run the 5000m five times before setting the world record back in June, also setting world records in the 1500m and the mile, all within a space of seven weeks.
&ldquo;This has been an amazing year for me,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Making history today, winning two gold medals in a championship is what I was dreaming for this season. I have been patient, waiting to be able to break world records and win double golds. But my dream just came true, it is amazing.
&ldquo;The race was not easy. It was a tactical one but I am mentally stable and have managed to push myself.&rdquo;
Hassan, who was going for an unprecedented treble across the 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m, was consoled by her silver, one place higher than her position in the 1500m, having suffered a fall in the 10,000m final which denied her a medal.
&ldquo;These championships have taught me a lot,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It has given me more confidence because I moved to the marathon this year and for two years I've hardly done any speed work at all. How I was able to sprint at the end, I don't know. I really felt amazing on the last lap and it was only in the last 20 metres I couldn't hold on. Faith was stronger than me today, but I know where I am at and I'm excited.
&ldquo;I will have to be sharper next year and prepare myself more for these shorter races. I am a very bad tactical racer. I hate it. I love racing too much. But tonight, I thought I'd see how I do in a tactical race and I felt amazing, especially over the last 400m.
Chebet, 23, was grateful to make yet another championship podium.
&ldquo;My second medal from the World Championships &ndash; could I ask for more?&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;In a final full of the greatest female distance runners in the world, I didn&rsquo;t believe it would possible (to win a medal). The slow pace wasn&rsquo;t the best tactic for me, because I am not so good at sprinting, but fortunately I managed to do it on the last lap.&rdquo;
Having succeeded in her quest for a double in Budapest, how much farther would Kipyegon aim to go in Paris?

Kipyegon charges to unprecedented double with 5000m victory in Budapest

Of all the finals that have been decided at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23, only the men&rsquo;s pole vault retained its medallists from Oregon &ndash; and then some.
In a thrilling contest, which served as one of the highlights of day eight, world record-holder Mondo Duplantis, Asian champion Ernest Obiena, and Olympic silver medallist Chris Nilsen completed the podium once again, albeit in a different order. And, similar to the women&rsquo;s pole vault where the gold medal was shared, this time the bronze was shared between Nilsen and two-time Commonwealth champion Kurtis Marschall, who earned his first global medal. Obiena upgraded his Oregon bronze to silver.
For a man who has become so accustomed to winning, Duplantis approached this evening&rsquo;s contest with a bit of sobriety, perhaps still smarting from his defeat in Monaco where he was relegated to fourth.
He even started out with the opening height of 5.55m with the rest of the field, much to everyone&rsquo;s surprise, but was the last man standing and took the gold medal with 6.10m. Obiena, who was the only other man in the field to successfully clear 6.00m, equalled his own Asian record.
In successfully defending his title, the Olympics champion becomes the third man after the legendary Sergey Bubka and Sam Kendricks to successfully defend a world pole vault title.
The event started out with 13 men and the bar set at 5.55m, which most of the field cleared at the first time of asking. Marschall, Belgium&rsquo;s Ben Broeders and USA&rsquo;s Zach Mcwhorter cleared the mark on their second attempts.
After the initial wobble, five-time Australian champion Marschall found his groove to go past 5.75m and 5.85m at his first attempt. Poland&rsquo;s Robert Sobera and Turkey&rsquo;s Ersu Sasma both bowed out at 5.75m, but 11 men got over it &ndash; depth only bettered at the 2007 World Championships.
The bar went up to 5.85m, taking with it five more casualties: China&rsquo;s Huang Bokai and Yao Jie, Machworter, Broeders and Italy&rsquo;s Claudio Stecchi.
Nilsen &ndash; who won in Monaco when Duplantis had his only defeat of the year &ndash; had missed the height at his first two tries, but crossed the bar on his third attempt.
For the first time ever in the pole vault contest, five men successfully got over 5.90m. France&rsquo;s Thibaut Collet, the surprise package of the competition, did so on his first attempt to set a lifetime best, but ultimately went no higher.
Duplantis, naturally, got over 5.90m and 5.95m with ease. Likewise, Obiena succeeded on his first try at those heights. Marschall equalled his lifetime best of 5.95m and Nilsen matched that height, putting the duo in joint third.
Obiena was Duplantis&rsquo;s last challenger, clearing 6.00m, but eventually bowing out after one failed try at 6.05m and two at 6.10m.
Duplantis, meanwhile, was in a class of his own, soaring over those bars with ease, each time earning a great response from the crowd.
With the title secured and the runway all to himself, Duplantis took three attempts at a would-be world record of 6.23m. They were ultimately unsuccessful, but he was still delighted with his performance.
&ldquo;I'm really happy about all these consecutive golds,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I don't know where this one ranks, but I'm happy to keep winning. This was maybe the craziest atmosphere I've ever competed in so it meant a lot to be able to turn on a pole vault show for them. There were so many Swedish supporters here, it almost felt like I was in the Stockholm stadium.
&ldquo;I'll be ready for Paris and the Olympics but right now I want to live in the moment and enjoy these World Championships and this title,&rdquo; he added. &ldquo;I'll celebrate this, then think about Paris.&rdquo;
Nilsen was grateful to have overcome injuries to claim another global medal.
&ldquo;This is my fourth medal from international championships in a row,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;To fight my way back to the podium means a lot. I feel this one is the most important for me. My beautiful fianc&eacute;e Bree is here in the stands. This is the first ever European competition she travelled to with me and that makes the competition really special.&rdquo;
Marschall, meanwhile, is now turning his attention to a new target.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s unbelievable,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;This is the first time I've performed at my best at a major. This is incomparable to anything I've experienced in my life. Knowing that I can produce on the world stage gives me a lot of confidence going into next year. I couldn't be in better shape right now and I'm going to add to it so I can get over that elusive 6.00m barrier.&rdquo;

In the end, the women's 4x100m at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 came down to a battle between the newly-crowned world champion in the 100m and the two-time world 200m champion. Ostensibly, at any rate.
In effect, however, when Sha&rsquo;Carri Richardson and Shericka Jackson stepped up for anchor leg duty, the race for the gold medal was already in US hands.
The night before, Richardson might have finished a distant third behind the imperious Jackson in the 200m final, but over half that distance the Jamaican was never going to make up a gap of two metres on the US sprinter who beat her to 100m gold.
Thus it proved, as Richardson charged down the home straight, crossing the line still clear in front in 41.03 &ndash; an improvement of 0.04 on the championship record set by Jamaica in Daegu in 2011.
Jackson brought the Jamaicans home 0.18 behind, in 42.21, with the British quartet of Asha Philip, Imani Lansiquot, Bianca Williams and Daryll Neita claiming bronze in 41.97 &ndash; ahead of Italy (fourth in 42.49), Poland (fifth in 42.66) and Germany (sixth in 42.96).
On reflection, as Richardson and her teammates celebrated the retention of the title USA gained ahead of Jamaica in Oregon last year, it was their third leg runner who played the decisive role.
At the halfway stage the US quartet was playing catch up, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce having rocketed Jamaica in front with a storming second leg. Up stepped Gabby Thomas - runner up to Jackson in the 200m final but a bend runner supreme.
The graduate of Harvard University, whose list of alumni also includes John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Barack Obama, produced a presidential performance, furnishing Richardson with a lead she was never likely to relinquish.
For Thomas and Richardson, who were backed up on the opening two legs by Tamari Davis and Twanisha Terry, it has been a highly productive first World Championships. Silver and gold for Thomas; two golds and a bronze for Richardson.
The consolation for Fraser-Pryce and for Jackson, who were supported by Natasha Morrison on the lead-off leg and Shashalee Forbes on leg three, was another silver to add to their considerable medal collections from the World Championships.
Fraser-Pryce now has 16 of them, four shy of the record tally held by Allyson Felix: 10 gold, five silver and one bronze.
Jackson, 29, now has 11 medals: four gold, four silver and three bronze.
