THE HALF MARATHON LOTTERY

Why did you hold a lottery?
We know that a lot of people look forward to running at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen. And we know from experience that especially entries for the half marathon are in high demand. To make sure that everyone has an equal chance to secure an entry, the starting bibs were distributed by lottery.

Is there a lottery for all three distances?
No. There will only be a lottery for the entries to the Half Marathon. The entries to the One Mile and the 5 kilometer races will be offered in open sale.

How did the lottery work?
When the lottery opened, you had two weeks to register. This gave you plenty of time to enter, regardless of your work schedule or location. Everyone had the same chance of being selected, whether they registered on the first or last day of the entry period. After the draw process, all registered participants received an email (11 April) informing them whether they had secured a spot. The lottery system has been tested and used for major events for many years, and we appreciate your understanding that it was the best way to allocate race entries for the Half Marathon.

When did the lottery open and close?
The lottery opened at 11:00 AM CET on Thursday, March 6, 2025. After that, you could enter at any time until March 20 at 11:59 PM CET. Your chances were the same no matter when you registered during the period.

Why were half marathon entries offered through a lottery?
We expected that a lot of runners wanted to participate in the WRRC Copenhagen 26. Our experience shows that the half marathon distance is especially in high demand. To ensure that everyone had an equal chance to secure a spot, entries for the half marathon were allocated via a lottery.

Could you register more than one person in the lottery?
You could register together with up to two friends. When you entered the lottery, you selected 'Team of 2 or 3'. First, you filled in your own information. At the end, you could choose to add your teammates’ details. If you didn’t have their information and your running buddy needed to fill in their information themselves, you simply pressed confirm, and you received an email with a link. This link should be forwarded to the one or two others, so they could fill in their information. This had to be completed before the lottery period ended, 20 March. If this wass not completed, the entire order would be canceled. Each person was responsible for ensuring that details were entered correctly and that they only appeared in the lottery once.

Could teams sign up using the same e-mail?
No, if you signed up as a team with 2 or 3 team members, every person had to register individual information - including individual e-mail.

When did I get a response?
11 April 2025 everyone registered in the lottery received an email. Both winners and the unsuccessful.

Could you register in the lottery multiple times?
No. After the lottery period ended, all entries were scanned to remove duplicates. If duplicate entries were found, all orders containing the given person were deleted.

Could you enter the lottery without providing any details?
No. Every single lottery registration had to include name, email, and other required information.

What information did you need to provide in the lottery?
Everyone completed a full registration, just without payment. This included name, date of birth, email, expected finish time, etc.

Could you edit information afterwards?
If you were selected in the lottery and completed the order, you received a link to your profile, where you can update details such as your expected finish time.

Can I cancel my registration?
If you were selected in the lottery, you can choose not to complete your registration by making the payment. Please note that if you do not pay, any other registrations in the same order will be canceled. Once the payment has been made, your registration is final. During 2025, we will offer a platform for transferring race entries. More details on this will be announced later.

HALF MARATHON PAYMENT

When did I have to pay?
Wednesday, 30 April we sent emails with the payment links to all winners of the lottery. Payment had to be completed before deadline, 6 May.

When is the payment deadline?
The payment deadline was Tuesday 6 May, at 23:59 (CET). If payment was not completed by then, the whole order was cancelled.

How does team payment work?
The team captain (the person who created the registration) will receive the payment link and was responsible for completing the total payment for the team within the deadline. If payment was not completed, all team entries were cancelled.

I think I missed an email from you about the lottery and payment – when did you send them?

  • 11 April emails were sent to everyone registered in the lottery, informing if they were successful or unsuccessful.
  • 18 April all winners of the lottery received an email about the postponement of payment due du technical issues with the payment gateways.
  • 30 April: Mails were sent to all winners of the lottery with the payment link.
