Preparations for the World Athletics Indoor Championships Belgrade 22, which will be held from 18-20 March at the Stark Arena, are ongoing, as is the selection of 900 volunteers who will be engaged in this big competition.
On Sunday 5 December, International Volunteer Day was celebrated by athletes and volunteers as they spent time together at the Athletics Hall in Banjica. Asmir Kolasinac and Sara and Anja Lukic demonstrated rules and techniques to the volunteers and helped them to try athletics events. The events they demonstrated were the high jump, long jump, shot put and sprints. It was a unique opportunity for all volunteers to experience athletics events and to get an idea of what the upcoming World Athletics Indoor Championships will look like.
"As a sportsperson who has taken part in the Olympic Games, and many other world, European and national championships, I am aware that volunteers represent one of the most significant links in organisation itself," said shot putter Kolasinac, a Serbian team member.
"It is a little more than a hundred days until the World Athletics Indoor Championships starts and that is enough time for all of us to prepare and present ourselves in the best way possible – both you as volunteers and we as sportspeople."
Predrag Momirovic, the event CEO, added: "We are happy to have you here today with us and for the fact that we will work together on preparing a unique sporting event in Belgrade next year. Thank you very much for having time for us. Without you, organisation of the World Athletics Indoor Championships Belgrade 22 would not be possible."
Around 300 volunteers heard a presentation on volunteering, which is a mandatory part of selection and training for taking part in WIC Belgrade 22. Applications for volunteers are still open and there are few positions left. If you are interested in joining the organising team of this great sporting event click here.
