World record-holder Devynne Charlton successfully defended her 60m hurdles title, winning a thrilling race of record depth in 7.72 at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25.
Before this world indoor final, the record number of athletes finishing under 7.80 in a single race was three. In Nanjing the top six all beat that mark, Ditaji Kambundji dipping for silver in 7.73 and Ackera Nugent getting bronze in 7.74.
The top six were separated by just 0.04. Pia Skrzyszowska was fourth in a Polish record of 7.74, USA&rsquo;s Grace Stark was fifth in the same time and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands was sixth in 7.76.
That time of 7.76 would have been enough to win 15 of the past 20 editions of the World Indoor Championships.
The field for the final was stacked.&nbsp;
Charlton got a great start and while her rivals tried hard to chase her down, the Bahamian held them off by only hundredths of a second to secure her second successive world indoor title, and her third world indoor medal overall after her silver from 2022.
Switzerland&rsquo;s Kambundji started as the fastest in the world this year thanks to the 7.67 European indoor record she set to win her European indoor title earlier this month &ndash; a time just 0.02 off the world indoor record set by Charlton at last year&rsquo;s World Indoor Championships in Glasgow.&nbsp;
This time they were just 0.01 apart, with Jamaica&rsquo;s Nugent following a further hundredth behind.
Nugent denied Skrzyszowska a medal by three thousandths of a second, though the 2024 world indoor bronze medallist did leave with the national record to her name.
&ldquo;It was a big deal for me to come here and show up, defend my title,&rdquo; said Charlton, who was eighth on the list of entries for Nanjing on season's best but peaked when it mattered the most. &ldquo;It was a big goal for me. It wasn't looking great, but I trusted the people around me and I was able to pull it off.&nbsp;
&ldquo;It's definitely super hard to defend a title at an event like this. The women always show up. To come away with a win against these ladies, it's really cool.&rdquo;
Nugent had averted disaster in the semifinals as she managed to stay on her feet despite hitting the final hurdle hard &ndash; so much so that the top of the barrier came completely away from the frame.
She managed to finish second in a race won by Skrzyszowska &ndash; 7.79 to 8.00. Visser won her semifinal in 7.81 to Charlton&rsquo;s 7.82, while the third semifinal was won by Stark in 7.72 from Kambundji on 7.76.
China&rsquo;s Wu Yanni missed out on a place in the final by just 0.01 but will take consolation from setting a national record of 8.01 &ndash; a time that places her fourth on the Asian all-time list &ndash; in front of a passionate home crowd.

Charlton retains 60m hurdles title in race of record depth in Nanjing

South Africa&rsquo;s Prudence Sekgodiso ran a world-leading indoor national record to win her country&rsquo;s first women&rsquo;s world indoor medal at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25.
The Olympic finalist clocked 1:58.40, her strong finish seeing her surge away to win gold ahead of Ethiopia&rsquo;s Nigist Getachew and Portugal&rsquo;s Patricia Silva. They all had the indoor races of their lives, Getachew running 1:59.63 and Silva an indoor national record of 1:59.80.
Sekgodiso delivered one of the biggest upsets at the WIC Nanjing 25, flipping the script to upstage Ethiopia&rsquo;s defending champion and Paris Olympic silver medallist Tsige Duguma to claim victory.
The event had already proven unpredictable, with several top contenders falling short in the semifinals, including US indoor champion Nia Akins and Olympic finalist Shafiqua Maloney. This set the stage for a somewhat unexpected outcome in the final.
Duguma and her teammate Getachew set a fast pace from the start, surging ahead in the first 200m with Getachew taking the lead and dictating the tempo.&nbsp;
The South African nearly stumbled while attempting to catch up with the Ethiopian duo but quickly regained her balance and composure. Finding her rhythm, she stayed close behind the leading pair. As the fast pace began to wear down her rivals, Sekgodiso capitalised on their fatigue, surging past them to seize control of the race.
The Olympic finalist was unstoppable as she sped towards the finish line to improve on her previous national record of 1:59.88 set in Karlsruhe and equalled in Lievin. Her medal was her country&rsquo;s first gold at the WIC Nanjing 25.&nbsp;
Sekgodiso&rsquo;s winning time is her fourth sub-two-minute run of the season and so fast was the race that even fourth- and fifth-place finishers Switzerland&rsquo;s Audrey Werro and newly crowned European indoor champion Anna Wielgosz set an national record of 1:59.81 and a PB of 2:00.34, respectively.
"It's a surprise. You have the world's fastest in the race, but I believed that I could make it, and to make it and grab that gold medal, I'm proud," said&nbsp;Sekgodiso. "I did dream of this, I've been working so hard for this. We have a long season ahead and I believe there's still more to come."
The World Indoor Championships in Nanjing marked Getachew&rsquo;s debut on the indoor circuit, and the Ethiopian will undoubtedly be satisfied to leave the Chinese city with her first global medal.
It was a historic outing for Portuguese champion Silva whose exploit comes 24 years after her father Rui Silva won the 1500m at the 2001 edition of the championships held in Lisbon.
"This is more than a dream, I'm so happy," she said. "Winning a medal 24 years after my Dad, I think my family is so proud. They teach me the values of being an athlete, to work a lot. I think they are super proud that I did it."

Sekgodiso on song to win 800m gold in Nanjing

Josh Hoey fought off the dual threat of Eliott Cretan and Elvin Canales to win a thrilling men&rsquo;s 800m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing on Sunday.
Hoey had been earmarked as the overwhelming favourite for gold after clocking 1:43.24 at the US Indoor Championships.
Only Wilson Kipketer had ever run faster for the distance indoors, and there were suggestions his world record of 1:42.67 from 1997 might well be under threat on the third and final day of action at these championships.
In the end, Hoey&rsquo;s winning time of 1:44.77 was some way short of that mark but this was more about a first major title of any kind than when the clock stopped.
Despite the pre-event favourite tag, this was far from a time trial and he had to scrap from the outset as Belgian Crestan and Hoey&rsquo;s US teammate Brendon Miller all tried to take the front of the field at the turn.
Hoey won that particular scrap before being forced to wrestle the lead back from Miller when he passed his teammate briefly at the halfway mark. That push seemed to leave Miller without the legs for the home straight for a captivating finale to the race.
Hoey kicked for the line but, in his dying strides, faded badly but did just enough to dip clear of Crestan and take gold by just 0.04. The Honduran-born Canales celebrated his bronze as though the title was his, launching his way around the track in a mix of smiles and tears in the immediate aftermath.
For Hoey, at the age of 25, it was finally a realisation of his talent on the global stage.
He had turned professional after setting a high school national record for the 800m all the way back in 2018. But in the ensuing years, he struggled to make his mark at his national championships, and with that the global events proving out of his reach.
He chopped and changed those guiding him, by his own admission working his way through five or six coaches before finally settling on the Australian Justin Rinaldi 18 months ago.
Rinaldi&rsquo;s major target was to hold back his athlete a little in training and get him to bide his time to get to a major outdoor final, which had been a target of Hoey in his very first year as a pro.
The patience finally began to pay off during this indoor season in particular. He raised some eyebrows by beating 2024 world indoor champion Bryce Hoppel at the Millrose Games back in February.
That run, combined with a North American record for the 1000m - his 2:14.48 the second-fastest time in history - as well as his impressive outing in the national championships seemed to put him a class apart from the rest of the six-man field in the Nanjing final.
But he needed all his pace, talent, experience and mental fortitude to hold off the various threats in the final.

Hoey holds his nerve to take 800m gold in Nanjing

Ethiopia&rsquo;s Gudaf Tsegay improved her own championship record to 3:54.86 to win the 1500m title at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25.
Tsegay now has two world indoor 1500m titles to her name, both set with championship record-breaking performances, and her latest winning time is the fourth-fastest indoor women&rsquo;s 1500m in history behind her own world record of 3:53.09. She owns all four of the fastest performances of all time, two of them set in 2025, and she went into the championships as a big favourite following her 3:53.92 win in Lievin in February.
She led an Ethiopian top two, Diribe Welteji following her home for silver in 3:59.30 and Great Britain&rsquo;s Georgia Hunter Bell getting bronze in an indoor PB of 3:59.84. Australia's Georgia Griffith set an Oceanian indoor record of 4:00.80 in fourth.
Tsegay, also the world record-holder in the 5000m outdoors, contested three events &ndash; the 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m &ndash; at the Paris Olympics and was disappointed after missing out on a medal in each of those disciplines.
She was back to her brilliant best in Nanjing.
&ldquo;It was not an easy race,&rdquo; said Tsegay, who won world 5000m gold in 2022 and the world 10,000m title in 2023. &ldquo;This was a fast time, so I'm very happy about that.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Athletes go through ups and downs, injuries, challenges &ndash; it's no problem. I prefer the indoors. For outdoors, I'll do the 800m or 10,000m, but indoors I like the 1500m.&rdquo;
Her passion for the event shows.
The 28-year-old went straight to the front of the race in Nanjing and was tracked early on by world 1500m silver medallist and world road mile champion Welteji.
Tsegay began to create a gap and Welteji was joined by Griffith, while Hunter Bell led a group behind them.
After a blistering start, Tsegay remained inside world record pace for more than half the race. Her win never looked in doubt, but the contest for the two other medals was on.
Hunter Bell closed the gap on Welteji and Griffith, before a fight for the finish line. Welteji managed to hold off her rivals and was rewarded with silver to match her world outdoor medal of the same colour from Budapest, and improve on her fifth-place finish from Glasgow last year.
Hunter Bell also matched the colour of medal that she achieved at the Olympic Games in Paris, bagging bronze by half a second ahead of Griffith.
The British athlete later called it &ldquo;redemption&rdquo;.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I really wanted to bounce back,&rdquo; said Hunter Bell, who finished fourth at the European Indoor Championships.
&ldquo;When they went off, I just felt it was fast. I was not wanting to use all my energy too quickly and I was like, &lsquo;be patient&rsquo;. It's very brave of her (Tsegay) to run that fast. This medal means a lot. I just want to get as many medals as possible, and I love championship racing.&rdquo;

Tsegay runs championship record to win 1500m title in Nanjing

Jakob Ingebrigtsen, at long last, has a world title over 1500m.
One day after earning his first world indoor title by taking 3000m gold, the Norwegian completed the distance double in Nanjing by winning the 1500m, becoming just the second man in history to win two gold medals at the same World Indoors, following in the footsteps of Haile Gebrselassie who achieved the 1500m/3000m double in 1999.
The 24-year-old controlled the pace and held off his challengers to take the title in 3:38.79. Britain's Neil Gourley came through to take silver in 3:39.07 ahead of surprise bronze medallist Luke Houser of the USA.
The two-time world champion over 5000m had already made headlines earlier in the season by breaking the world indoor mile and 1500m records in Li&eacute;vin.
Eager to claim a long-awaited world gold in the 1500m after missing out at the 2022 World Indoors, and at the past three editions of the outdoor World Championships, the multiple world record-holder adopted a slightly different strategy. Instead of his usual position at the back of the pack, he started three spots from the rear.
With six laps remaining, Ingebrigtsen moved to the middle of the field before taking the lead with about four laps to go. Sweden&rsquo;s Samuel Pihlstrom, running on the outside, attempted to overtake the two-time Olympic champion but lost ground as Ingebrigtsen maintained his commanding position to become the first man in this century to win the 1500m/3000m double at the World Indoors.
Behind the six-time European gold medallist, a battle for the remaining podium spots unfolded. Great Britain&rsquo;s Neil Gourley held close but was overtaken by Portugal&rsquo;s Isaac Nader, who surged into second place as the bell rang. Ingebrigtsen responded by shifting gears, accelerating smoothly to extend his lead. Gourley and USA&rsquo;s Luke Houser stayed consistent, securing silver and bronze, while Nader finished just outside the podium in fourth with a time of 3:39.58.
&ldquo;Of course this is something special,&rdquo; said Ingebrigtsen. &ldquo;It's very difficult to compare yourself against history and what others are doing. I'm only focusing on myself. I think I can do more, so I'll try to maximise that and grab the opportunity given to me. The goal is to participate as much as I can. It's definitely important to use the opportunities and not take anything for granted.&rdquo;
Gourley who narrowly missed out on a podium placement at the European indoors, was pleased with his silver medal.
&ldquo;I'm really happy with this&rdquo;, he said. &ldquo;I came here to right some of the wrongs of a couple of weeks ago at the Europeans, where I feel like I didn't compete or represent myself too well. This week in Nanjing, I just really felt like myself. I had a game plan, which was to stay at the back of the race until it started moving. I waited for the big move and then committed to that move. And it worked.&rdquo;
Winning a medal at his first World Indoors was a dream come true for Houser.
&ldquo;I came into this race, stepping on the line, I knew I could I could get a medal,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I knew I was capable of doing it, but actually going out there and doing it is a whole different thing. I&rsquo;m just so happy I could get that done. It's a dream come true to be out there competing with the world's best.&rdquo;

Ingebrigtsen completes distance double with 1500m gold in Nanjing

Sander Skotheim ended 2024 with world and continental silver medals. Three months into 2025, the 22-year-old Norwegian has already gone one better by earning world and European titles.
Two weeks after winning the European indoor title with a European indoor record of 6558, Skotheim once again put together a remarkable series across two days of competition to take the heptathlon title in Nanjing with 6475.
Johannes Erm, who just missed the podium at the European Indoors, this time claimed silver with an Estonian record of 6437, while Germany&rsquo;s Till Steinforth claimed bronze with 6275.
Steinforth got off to a strong start with a 6.82 run in the 60m, but Erm (6.94) and Skotheim (6.97) were close behind. An 8.00m leap in the long jump catapulted Skotheim into the overall lead and that&rsquo;s where he stayed for the duration of the competition.
Steinforth jumped 7.61m and Erm sailed out to 7.77m, putting them in second and third overall respectively, but their positions switched after the shot put where Erm threw 15.27m to Steinforth&rsquo;s 14.36m. Skotheim maintained his lead with 14.68m, and USA&rsquo;s Heath Baldwin moved into medal contention thanks to a 16.00m heave.
Skotheim and Baldwin both cleared 2.13m in the high jump, putting them in first and second respectively at the end of the first day. Erm (1.98m) and Steinforth (2.01m) were still in contention, though, with everything to play for heading into day two.
As he had done on day one, Steinforth started day two with a victory, clocking 7.85 in the 60m hurdles, moving him back up into third. Erm also moved up a place thanks to his 7.91 run, while Skotheim&rsquo;s 7.93 kept him on top with a comfortable margin.
Erm ate into that points cushion in the pole vault with the Estonian clearing 5.30m to Skotheim&rsquo;s 5.00m, reducing the gap to 52 points. Steinforth&rsquo;s 5.20m boosted his medal chances as Baldwin managed a vault of 4.80m, a solid enough vault by his own standards but not enough to stay in medal contention against such quality opposition.
Skotheim went into the 1000m with a comfortable enough points margin, and he managed to survive a barge from Erm on the final lap to finish in 2:36.08, giving him the title with 6475. Erm, who crossed the line in 2:34.91, took silver with 6437 and Steinforth held on for bronze, 6275.
Baldwin took fourth with a season&rsquo;s best of 6188 ahed of Vilem Strasky (6104). In sixth, Brazil&rsquo;s Jose Fernando Ferreira set a South American record of 6010.
&ldquo;It's been a very good month,&rdquo; said Skotheim, who, in the space of seven weeks, has produced three of the 13 best scores of all time in the heptathlon. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been very motivated in the winter to get the work in after what happened in Paris, so I feel like the indoor season has been a success. Now moving to outdoors, I want to show that I'm back in the decathlon as well. I definitely feel the fatigue of the body after a long indoor season, so I'm ready for some rest now.&rdquo;

Skotheim claims heptathlon gold in Nanjing

Nicola Olyslagers successfully defended her high jump title, clearing 1.97m to win on countback ahead of her Australian teammate Eleanor Patterson on the final morning of competition at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25 on Sunday (23).
Olyslagers had a perfect scorecard up to her eventual winning height and that made the difference. Patterson needed two attempts at 1.92m, meaning she secured the silver when both she and her compatriot failed their third and final attempts at 1.99m.
Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh had been hoping to regain a world indoor crown she won in 2022, after getting silver behind Olyslagers in 2024 &ndash; her most recent defeat &ndash; but she completed the world indoor medal set in Nanjing. Explaining later how she had experienced an issue with her ankle, she managed a best of 1.95m this time to claim bronze on countback ahead of Serbia's Angelina Topic.&nbsp;
Olyslagers now has five global medals to her name &ndash; her two world indoor golds accompanying two Olympic silvers from Tokyo and Paris, and a World Championships bronze from Budapest.
The contest in Nanjing was the 28-year-old&rsquo;s first competition since the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels in September, where she finished runner-up to Mahuchikh. World record-holder Mahuchikh, who cleared 2.10m last year, started the competition as world leader thanks to her 2.01m clearance at the Banska Bystrica in February, where Patterson finished second with 1.99m.
But Olyslagers and her coach, Matt Horsnell, were confident with their decision to open her year in Nanjing.
Starting with a first-time clearance of 1.89m, she then cleared 1.92m and 1.95m, also on her first attempts.
Four athletes &ndash; Olyslagers, Patterson, Mahuchikh and Topic &ndash; remained in the competition at that stage. Like Olyslagers, Patterson and Mahuchikh managed the height on the first try, while Topic needed two attempts.
Then the bar moved to 1.97m. While Olyslagers and Patterson managed it on their first attempts, Mahuchikh and Topic both knocked off the bar and decided to skip straight to 1.99m.&nbsp;
But the gamble didn&rsquo;t pay off and the medallits were decided when all four athletes were unable to clear 1.99m &ndash; Olyslagers and Patterson with three attempts and Mahuchikh and Topic with two, following their earlier single try at 1.97m.
&ldquo;This is the first time I've come from a gold medal position to try and defend something outside of Australia,&rdquo; said Olyslagers. &ldquo;I knew that if I wanted to jump as high as I wanted, to be as competitive as I wanted, I needed to do things outside of my normal comfort zone. I needed to do something new, like start a world championships as my first competition of the season.
&ldquo;I was really inspired by Yaroslava's world record attempts last year, and how she changed her run-up. So, I was jumping with a new run-up today. I want to jump as high as Yaroslava &ndash; if I want to be competitive, I need to be trying and changing things up.&rdquo;
Patterson, the 2022 world champion and Olympic bronze medallist, is now a two-time world indoor silver medallist following her runner-up finish in Belgrade in 2022.
&ldquo;I can't be mad about the fact that I come away with a silver. I came here for the gold medal, but I am glad about the result,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;A part of me is frustrated that I didn't jump higher, but at the same time I'm always proud (at the result). It's absolutely an honour to jump against these girls &ndash; we kind of always change the orders of the medals, but I'm glad I ended with silver.&rdquo;
Mahuchikh was also gracious in defeat.
&ldquo;I think we should respect every gold because as an athlete, I know how much it takes,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;They are doing amazing out there. Coming from the European Indoor Championships, I had some injury. During today's jumps, I felt 1.95m was not good, but I was sure that 1.97m would be great. So I started running but I felt that my ankle is not good, unfortunately.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I didn't feel any pressure, I just enjoyed the atmosphere of the track and the competition. I'll be looking forward to the outdoor season. Next month I will be coming back to China for the Diamond League, and hopefully I will be better then.&rdquo;

Olyslagers retains world indoor high jump crown in Nanjing

USA&rsquo;s Claire Bryant had the competition of her life to win the long jump title at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25 during the final morning session of action on Sunday (23).
Making her major international debut, the 23-year-old led from the first round and maintained her strong form throughout the competition, setting a PB of 6.96m in the fifth round.
That meant the 2023 NACAC U23 silver medallist ensured her first global medal was a gold one, with silver secured by Switzerland&rsquo;s Annik Kalin and bronze going to Spain&rsquo;s Fatima Diame.
Bryant opened with 6.76m in the first round &ndash; the second-best mark of her career behind the PB of 6.88m she set to finish third at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2023.
Diame moved up into second from the next jump of the contest, the 2024 world indoor bronze medallist recording 6.72m. USA&rsquo;s Monae' Nichols secured silver ahead of Diame in the world indoor final in Glasgow last year and she opened with 6.49m but that was her single valid jump of the competition.
Bryant backed up her opening jump with 6.72m in the second round, while Diame fouled and Kalin, who finished fourth in the heptathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, leapt 6.63m.
Bulgaria&rsquo;s Plamena Mitkova matched Kalin&rsquo;s mark in the next round but Kalin held on to third place on countback when she leapt 6.59m for a superior second-best jump.
Bryant extended her lead with her own third jump, soaring 6.90m to add two centimetres to her PB, before Diame jumped 6.50m and they maintained their top two positions.
There was no change to the top three in the fourth round but Bryant wasn&rsquo;t done and she improved again in round five &ndash; soaring 6.96m. While Diame closed with jumps of 6.46m and 6.41m, Kalin was saving her best for last and with 6.83m in the final round she moved up a place on the podium. While Kalin ended her competition on a high, there was an injury scare for Mitkova who clutched her right leg after her final attempt and left the track in a wheelchair. Her 6.63m from the third round saw her finish fourth, ahead of Romania&rsquo;s Alina Rotaru-Kottmann with 6.59m.
&ldquo;If someone had told me that I would walk away from Nanjing with the title, I would thank them for that vote of confidence,&rdquo; said Bryant. &ldquo;I didn't come in with expectations, I just wanted to enjoy the moment. Every part of this is so cool.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I woke up at like 4.45am this morning, I felt like it was Christmas morning and I knew there was something waiting for me. You can always surprise yourself in track, and I think that's what's so great about this sport. Seven metres is coming, for sure. I was working on it on that last jump. It was just a little foul, but it's okay &ndash; I can't complain.&rdquo;

Bryant breaks through to win world indoor long jump gold in Nanjing

Grant Holloway won his third successive world indoor 60m hurdles title, taking gold in Nanjing in 7.42 to extend his 11-year winning streak.
After some close races through the rounds, Holloway was a class apart in the final, winning by 0.12 from France's Wilhem Belocian. China's Liu Junxi was just a further 0.01 behind, taking bronze in 7.55.
The dominance of the 27-year-old US athlete was never in doubt, having clocked a world lead of 7.36 in Lievin last month. Here in Nanjing he raced to times of 7.49 and 7.48 to top the standings in the heats and semis.
In the final, the reigning Olympic champion was a tad slow out of the blocks but quickly recovered to distinguish himself from the rest of the field to claim his third consecutive world indoor gold. His winning time of 7.42 was 0.15 shy of his own world indoor record, but he still won by a comfortable margin and his 11-year winning streak doesn&rsquo;t look to be in danger.
With his victory in Nanjing, the three-time world outdoor champion is only the second man in World Indoors history to claim three 60m hurdles titles, following the footsteps of his compatriot Allen Johnson who claimed gold in 1995, 2003 and 2004 respectively. Holloway, however, is the first man to claim three consecutive titles in the event.
&ldquo;It was great,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;This one was a little bit different. I didn't have two great rounds, and had to rely on my experience to get me through the final. But I knew what I had to do; I knew what I was missing. Everybody was telling me, &lsquo;you've done this a million times before, you just got to do it again&rsquo;.
&ldquo;To win three indoors, and three outdoors, I think I'm the first person in history to ever do that. That's an amazing stat. Also, I think I can put grace in it, and hang up the 60m hurdles and try out a new event next year. That's something I can think about.&rdquo;
For Frenchman Belocian who claimed the silver medal, his position in Nanjing is certainly an upgrade from his eighth place in Belgrade in 2022 and the first senior global medal for the 29-year-old who recently won another silver at the European Indoor Championships.
China&rsquo;s Liu Junxi gave the home crowd something to cheer for by snatching the bronze medal in the keenly contested race. The host country had two representatives in the men&rsquo;s 60m hurdles final, with national indoor champion Weibo Qin finishing eighth in a time of 7.72.

Holloway wins third world indoor 60m hurdles title in Nanjing

Mujinga Kambundji won a thrilling 60m showdown to regain the 60m crown at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25 on Saturday (22).
The Swiss sprinter had finished 0.01 behind Italy's Zaynab Dosso at the European Indoor Championships earlier this month &ndash; Dosso winning in a world lead of 7.01 &ndash; but this time the roles reversed and Kambundji clocked 7.04 to hold off Dosso by 0.02.
Patrizia van der Weken finished third behind them in Apeldoorn and she did the same in Nanjing, making even more history for Luxembourg. Her bronze, secured in 7.07, is her nation's first ever world medal, indoors or out.
On the eve of the championships, Dosso explained the significance of her European indoor title win. &ldquo;Mujinga is not just a great competitor for me but also a great inspiration and a person that I admire,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Being able to defeat her was also an inspiration.&rdquo;
Kambundji&rsquo;s performance in Nanjing was also inspired and it took the 32-year-old to the top of the world indoor podium for the second time, following her 60m win in Belgrade in 2022. This latest gold is her third world indoor medal overall, as she got bronze in 2018, and it adds to a CV that also features world 200m bronze from 2019 and two European 200m titles.
&ldquo;I'm really happy, really relieved,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;This was a lot like the Europeans. Zaynab was also coming from that, and I knew she was going to be fast.&nbsp;
&ldquo;This means a lot, for this title to come at this stage of my career. I see it with other sprinters, with the older sprinters &ndash; they are also motivating me a lot to see that they're still running PBs, and running really fast at 35, 36 years old. It shows me that my best time can still be ahead of me.&rdquo;
While Kambundji said her technique &ldquo;just felt off&rdquo; in the earlier rounds, she used it as motivation for the final. She ran 7.20 to win her heat and 7.12 in her semifinal, compared to Dosso&rsquo;s 7.09 heat win and 7.07 semifinal &ndash; those times leading each of the rounds.
Dosso was disappointed with her start in the final and while she very quickly made up ground she was passed by Kambundji in the closing stages.
&ldquo;I'm pleased, but at the same time a little bit disappointed, because I know I can do better than this,&rdquo; said Dosso. &ldquo;In the 60m, you need a good start. I'm very curious to see what else I can deliver this summer, especially because I improved so much this season.&rdquo;
Van der Weken is another athlete who has made great strides this season and her 7.07 for bronze is just 0.01 off the PB she set at the European Indoor Championships.
In Glasgow last year she achieved the best placing by an athlete from her country in the history of the World Indoor Championships. Now she has become Luxembourg&rsquo;s first ever medallist on this world stage.

Kambundji regains world indoor 60m title in Nanjing

For a brief moment in Saturday&rsquo;s World Athletics Indoor Championships men&rsquo;s pole vault final, Mondo Duplantis looked human but just for a moment.
Instead, Emmanouil Karalis of Greece was left with the unfortunate tag of being the only man in a championship final to clear a height of 6.05m and not win gold.
The sole athlete other than Duplantis past six metres this season, clearing his personal best in Nanjing did for even the briefest of moments suggest the Swede could be toppled at a major final for the first time since 2019.
Duplantis momentarily looked frail as he faltered at his subsequent attempt at 6.10m but the blip was short-lived.
He cleared it at the next attempt and 6.15m at the first time of asking to ensure a hat-trick of world indoor titles. In another era, Karalis would have comfortably been crowned a world champion indoors with that particular mark.
Artificial intelligence had only given Duplantis a relatively meagre 92% chance of the victory when the 25-year-old was deemed by pundits, fans and rivals alike as much a banker for the win as is possible at these championships.
For much of the competition, he toyed with his peers as has become his custom. He opened at 5.70m while some were already bowing out, a height 57cm below the world record he had achieved in Clermont-Ferrand, France, at the end of last month.
He opted to pass at 5.80m, cleared 5.90m while barely looked like he was trying, again ducked out at 5.95m before returning for the 99th clearance of his illustrious career over the six-metre mark.
With just Karalis left in the competition by that stage, it was only a matter of moments before the pole vault century mark was attained. That 100 was all the more impressive bearing in mind the next best in the sport&rsquo;s record books is Sergey Bubka with 46 clearances of six metres and beyond.
For a time, Sam Kendricks had looked a potential challenger clearing every height from 5.50m to 5.90m at the first time of asking but then failed to go any higher, leaving him with the bronze medal behind Duplantis and Karalis.
Karalis looks the one athlete capable of pushing the world record-holder and seemingly competed with a smile on his face throughout this final. There was a warm embrace between the top two at the end, Duplantis having clearly relished the challenge.
All that remained after that was to see if Duplantis could manage a 12th world record and a clearance of 6.28m but the showman, who had done just that after his Olympic gold in Paris last summer, opted that 6.15m was enough on this occasion.
In the French capital, he lost his voice in the ensuing celebrations. After clearing 6.15m, he leapt off the map with the zest of a first-time championship winner. How the voice proves to be in the morning remains to be seen.

Duplantis retains world indoor pole vault title in Nanjing

The United States pulled off the first ever men&rsquo;s 1-2-3 at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing on Saturday as a composed Chris Bailey led from start to finish in the 400m.
Bailey had been the 2025 benchmark over two laps of the track, having run 44.70 this year followed by victory at what proved to be a combative US Indoors.
He was outside that mark at the line come the final with his effort of 45.08 but he was still a class apart from both his teammates and the rest of the world.
It was a first individual global title for the 24-year-old, who was sixth in the 400m final at the Paris Olympics before going on to seal 4x400m gold.
On the evidence of this final, a second gold of this championships looks a near dead cert unless any calamities arise come the changeovers in the event finale on Sunday.
The US had unashamedly made no secret of their desire for a sweep of the 400m and Brian Faust and Jacory Patterson both ran assured races to enter the home straight vying for silver and bronze behind their teammate.
Both grimaced in their final strides but Faust did enough to equal his personal best of 45.47 for the silver medal as Patterson finished in a time of 45.54 for the bronze.
It proved a historic 1-2-3, only the second time in the championships that a single nation has swept an individual podium as an Ethiopian trio of women did just that in Belgrade in 2022.
There was always going to be an entirely new-look podium in Nanjing with none of the medallists from Glasgow last year in this particular final. Defending champion Alexander Doom missed the entire indoor season with an adductor injury while silver medallist Karsten Warholm was absent from these championships. The bronze medallist from Glasgow, Jamaica&rsquo;s Rusheen McDonald, failed to even make it out of the heats.
The only athlete who ever looked capable of unsettling the US 400m hegemony, Attila Molnar, finished fast to close the gap on Faust and Patterson. But ultimately it did not prove quite enough for the Hungarian who had picked up his first major title with his recent gold at the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn earlier this month.
