The aim of this pillar is to remove the hurdles preventing local engagement in physical activity by using the increased publicity of athletics to create increased local engagement and promote the positive benefits of exercise through participation events and campaigns.
Glasgow’s vision is to create a vibrant athletics scene in the city where athletics is accessible, safe and attractive to all.
We will also encourage students and communities across Glasgow to try and participate in athletics.
Initiatives include:
Physical activity in schools
We are partnering with a local organisation within Scotland to develop a map for students to track their daily fitness activity and learn more about athletics competitions around the world. Students will learn about Scottish athletes, such as Laura Muir and Josh Kerr, and their achievements at global athletics competitions. This will be rolled-out to primary schools Scotland-wide.
Teacher training
To encourage accessible athletics, we will provide professional development sessions for teachers to develop their instruction in inclusive physical education. This session will be facilitated by Scottish Athletics’ National Disability Pathways Officer.
Junior Park Run
To encourage long-lasting participation in physical activity, we will help facilitate the development of a Junior Parkrun in the East End of Glasgow. While Parkrun Junior courses exist across Glasgow, there are currently none in the East End and the development of a course would provide young residents the opportunity to run each weekend at their local park.
Equipment gifting
To support clubs and sports halls in the East End, we will be donating equipment previously used in the Championships. This equipment will be used at local facilities where we will provide athletics coaching sessions.
