Local road race runners talk training tips with double Olympic champion David Rudisha

Participants of the annual Allan Scally Memorial Road Relay Race were surprised and delighted to meet renowned Kenyan athlete David Rudisha as he took a break from attending the World Indoor Athletics Championships Glasgow 24, today (Saturday 1 March).

The middle-distance running legend, and current world record holder in the 800m, took part in the prize giving and swapped training tips with winners following the popular 4 x5km relay race organised by prominent city athletics group, Shettleston Harriers.

David was invited to the event in his role as international ambassador for the World Athletics Indoor Championships, currently captivating spectators in the city 1-3 March 2024.

David presented prizes to winning men’s and women’s team, with Stirling University Athletics Club taking out the men’s race and Glasgow University Hares & Hounds claiming first place in the women’s race. 

With 1,000 runners (250 teams of 4) entered this year’s event, the road relay takes place in and around Glasgow Green, just a stone’s throw from where the World Championships is currently taking place.

David’s visit is part of World Athletics' commitment to promoting local engagement and enthusiasm during the World Athletics Indoor Championships. 

The two-time Olympic gold medallist, shared his enthusiasm for being given the opportunity to meet with the local community in Glasgow. He said: "I am thrilled to be a part of this prestigious local race and to chat to the passionate athletics community here in Glasgow. It's a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the spirit of the sport and showcase the excitement around the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24."

The 53rd Allan Scally Memorial Road Race, a cherished event in Scottish road racing, took place on the second day of the championships. Held in memory of the esteemed coach and team manager Allan Scally, the race is a traditional 4 x 5km relay event, attracting top athletes and enthusiastic spectators alike. The Allan Scally Trophy, awarded to the winning team, stands as one of Scottish road racing's most prestigious honours.

Elaine Mackay, President of Shettleston Harriers and current Club Coach, expressed her excitement about David’s visit. She said, "Having David join us for the Allan Scally Road Relay Race is a real treat. His presence will undoubtedly inspire our runners and add an extra layer of excitement to this already eagerly anticipated event."

A true family affair Elaine is the granddaughter of the late Allan Scally and her husband John Mackay is today’s race director. Allan’s grandchildren and great grandchildren were also in attendance. In total the Scally family have 97 years of service to the club and local community.
