<div>Daegu, KoreaWith one year to go to the Olympic Games in London Mo Farah found himself on top of the world. One week after being narrowly beaten in the 10,000m final the runner from Great Britain took the 5000 m World Championships gold, clocking 13:23.36. This time Farah could hold off the challenge from behind him in the final straight. The 28-year-old achieved another piece of history for European long distance running in Daegu. A week ago he became the first European 10,000m runner to win a medal on the global stage since Italy&rsquo;s Salvatore Antibo had taken silver in the Olympic final of 1988, incidentally, also in Korea. In the World Championships there had been no medal in this event since Francesco Panetta. The Italian was second in Rome in 1987. In the 5000m the last European medal had been won by Belgium&rsquo;s Mohammed Mourhit at the World Championships in Seville in 1999. While he had switched citizenship from Morocco there were two original Europeans who had taken silver and bronze in the 1987 championships: Domingos Castro (Portugal) and Jack Buckner (Great Britain). Only once had there been a European winner in the World Championships 5000 m: Eamonn Coghlan (Ireland) took the gold in Helsinki in 1983. Looking into Olympic history there it was Dieter Baumann who last won a medal in this event: The German became Olympic Champion in Barcelona in 1992. So Mo Farah, who has of course African routes, but who came to Britain at the age of eight, has achieved something quite remarkable in South Korea. So does he think that his performance can set an example and show that European distance runners can close the gap to the Africans and even beat them? &ldquo;Yes, definitely,&rdquo; Farah answers. &ldquo;Six or seven years ago we thought it will be impossible for us to ever beat the Africans. But others like Craig Mottram (third in the 5000m final at the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005) had shown that it is possible to win a medal. So I think now the gap between the Europeans and the Africans is starting to close a bit. You have to believe in yourself, you have to stay focused and you have to train very hard &ndash; then it is possible.&rdquo; Regarding the Olympics next year in London Farah was asked if his great success in Daegu somehow came a year too early. &ldquo;No, this is what we train for. We take one race after another. Of course it will be great to have the Olympics on my doorstep next year,&rdquo; explained the Londoner. &ldquo;And of course you never know what will happen in the time until the Games as well as in the races in London.&rdquo; But Farah is well positioned to get not too much of the hype in the built-up. Having switched coaches last year &ndash; he had left Alan Storey and joined the group of former marathon world-class runner Alberto Salazar in the USA &ndash; he partly moved to Oregon. &ldquo;It is quiet there. No-one knows what we are doing. So I will be fine there (preparing for the Olympics).&rdquo; &ldquo;I have to thank my coach Alberto Salazar for being able to achieve this,&rdquo; Farah said. But he also praised his former coach Alan Storey, &ldquo;who developed me into a world-class runner&rdquo;. After the 10,000m final and in preparation to the 5000m final the American had told him: You have to dig in, keep focused, don&rsquo;t let anyone pass you and think positive. &ldquo;That is what I was thinking about. But there were still some negative feelings, when we entered the home straight &ndash; I thought, &lsquo;Oh no, not again&rsquo;. But I held on. And I had learnt something from the 10,000 metres. There I had not much left at the end of the race. But this time I had saved a little bit of energy during the race for the final part. Especially since I knew about the speed of Bernard Lagat.&rdquo; This helped to hold off the challenge from Lagat on the home straight. The American turned out to actually have supported Farah in the 10,000m race a week ago. &ldquo;Yes, I was sitting in the stands, watched this race and hoped he would win, because he had worked so hard and was leading when they entered the home straight. So I was a bit disappointed that he could not hold on, but in championship races a lot can happen,&rdquo; said Lagat, who was happy with his silver medal. &ldquo;I know Mo is training hard and he deserved to win this tonight.&rdquo; Thinking back into childhood years and when he came to Great Britain from Somalia he said during the winner&rsquo;s press conference: &ldquo;This is amazing that I sit here today. When I came to my father, who had already been in London, it was of course a different life. For him it was very important that I do well at school. I loved sports and running. So when I went running my father would ask: But did you do your homework?&rdquo; It was then a sports teacher who spotted Farah&rsquo;s talent for distance running. &ldquo;He convinced me to stop playing football and going for athletics instead. And he brought me to the local athletics club, where it all started.&rdquo; When Farah was doing the lap of honour on the track in Daegu he carried the Union Jack with two words on it: &ldquo;Fly Mo&rdquo;. <div>Two years after finishing fifth in the Berlin World championships behind Caster Semenya, Maria Savinova got a much closer look as she swept past the South African with 30m to go to claim the 2011 World title in Daegu this evening. Berlin had been a difficult experience for Savinova. Clearly, it was an important lesson for her because in Daegu, Savinova went virtually into retreat and hardly left her room: &ldquo;I did not even go into the athletes&rsquo; village,&rdquo; she said, &ldquo;but stayed in my room watching Russian soaps. I was either training or in my room.&rdquo; The lack of distraction worked a treat and when Savinova got out onto the track she was raring to go. But she still saw Semenya as the biggest challenge. &ldquo;I thought I was running for silver and saw little hope of winning. Semenya looked so toned and ready to win when we lined up for the final.&rdquo; As they entered the final straight there only appeared to be one winner, but suddenly something changed. It was noticeable in Savinova&rsquo;s pace: &ldquo;Suddenly, I saw there was a chance to win.&rdquo; In those last 30m the Russian coasted past and then did something she did in Barcelona last summer &ndash; she started to smile and the smile just got broader the closer to the line she got. Her winning time of 1:55.87 eclipsed her previous best of 1:56.95 set winning the Russian trials in Cheboksary 22 July. But it could have been much faster: &ldquo;Once I saw I was going to win, I decelerated,&rdquo; explained the 26-year-old. That time could have been faster.&rdquo; Not that she seemed too concerned about that. There will clearly be other occasions where she can think about going faster. But what about the race? Was she not concerned at the fast pace set by Jepkosgei up front? &ldquo;Not in the slightest. I like to run an even pace with not too much contact with other runners, so I was happy. &ldquo;It was an ideal race for me, really. There were no obstacles that appeared in my way. Everything worked to my advantage.&rdquo; With three Russians in the race, was there an element of team tactics about the way they ran? &ldquo;None whatsoever. We raced as individuals. There were no team tactics.&rdquo; For the record, Yekaterina Kostetskaya was fifth and Yuliya Rusanova was eighth. It may have looked plain sailing now that the gold is round her neck, but there were problems in the build-up to this race. &ldquo;Five days before we came here I picked up a stomach bug and I was very afraid. But the whole thing cleared up in time.&rdquo; Another problem was racing. After the Russian trials on July 22, Savinova was looking for a race, but was unable to find one: &ldquo;I did not race for a whole month. It was very frustrating.&rdquo; Maybe, but it hardly seemed to matter. It may even have done her good as things turned out. Savinova first came to note at the European Indoor Championships in Torino where she employed her trademark finishing kick to lift the title and emerge from obscurity. Then came the glitch in Berlin (&ldquo;I was not ready enough, it was not a good year for me&rdquo;) There followed an excellent year where she lifted both significant titles on offer in 2010, the World Indoors and the European Championships. And now the World outdoor title: &ldquo;This year has been a dream,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I can hardly find the words to describe it. I am happy and more than satisfied with the outcome.&rdquo; In between times, she got married last autumn to her boyfriend, Aleksey Farnasov. &ldquo;Aleksey is also an athlete, he is part of the training group, and he comes on trips with me, so nothing specific has changed, really,&rdquo; she said, referring to married life. The man Savinova credits with her breakthrough in recent years was her coach of the last four years, Vladimir Kazarin. Kazarin was in the medals press conference to share in her moment of triumph. Born in Chelyabinsk, Savinova started to train with Kazarin four years ago in Yekaterinburg. Under Kazarin, the results started to come, beginning with Torino. In the beginning, Savinova used to spend a lot of time worrying about Semenya, Jepkosgei and Pamela Jelimo, all the big stars. Now the boot is on the other foot. They have to worry about her. In this respect Robert Hersh (USA), who polled most votes of the four Vice-Presidents who were elected at Congress, gained the support of Council and has been appointed as Senior Vice-President. Tarasti and Klappert made Honorary Chairpersons The President also paid tribute to two other officials retiring from their positions as Chairpersons of IAAF Commissions or Committees, Lauri Tarasti (FIN; Juridical Commission) and Otto Klappert (GER; Cross Country Committee), who respectively will now become Honorary Chairpersons of those same bodies. They were then followed onto the platform for the second half of the press conference by three newly crowned World champions, Anna Chicherova (RUS; HJ), David Greene (GBR; 400mH) and Dwight Phillips (USA; LJ). President Diack in his opening address, confirmed that the decision to come to Korea had clearly been the correct one, with the highlights being the great competitions, plenty of drama and excitement, and a wonderful promotion of the event right around the city. There had been a wonderful atmosphere in the stadium especially from young Koreans who were experiencing athletics for the first time. There had been lots of surprises in terms of winners. The “curse of the cover” itself proving that there are plenty of new stars emerging including the Australian hurdler Sally Pearson (100m H) and from Grenada Kirani James (400m), and that he was particularly happy to see other countries like Colombia, Iran, Tunisia etc... joining powers like the USA and Russia on the podium. Importantly for the IAAF’s fight for a clean sport, Daegu has also witnessed an historic Anti-Doping programme at these championships with the aim to take blood samples from all entrants successfully completed over a 17-day period. The great atmosphere in the stadium has been one of the strongest aspects of these championships and in line with that the local organisers have today announced very successful spectator attendance figures for the championships(see pdf available under 'Related Content' to the right of this text for under for full details). Global TV ratings for World Championships are alos looking very encouraging. Although at this stage the IAAF is only in receipt of provisional figures it is worthwhile to highlight some interesting facts. There has been coverage in over 200 countries worldwide and we expect the volume of coverage to be bigger than ever before. In Korea, the coverage has been much broader and better than ever before. There are 10 times more viewers watching athletics in Korea than there were for the last World Championships that took place in Asia only 4 years ago. For Osaka 2007 we had a cumulative average for the whole 9 day event of 6.6 million viewers, while we had 65 million for only the first 5 days (so not including the 200m final with Bolt). Elsewhere, after the first 4 days (half way) the Pan-European broadcaster Eurosport (who are showing 100 hours of coverage) were delighted with cumulative audience of 28.6 million, which compared to only 37.6 million viewers for the entire championship period in Osaka. In Japan, our partner TBS have had cumulative audiences for the first 5 days of 131 million, with peaks of 11.8 million viewers for the 100m final and the final of the Hammer Throw which was won by Koji Murofushi. This compares very favourably with the figures from Osaka where TBS was host broadcaster. Finally, in France, there was an average of 2.75 million for the 100m final, even though the time difference meant that it was Sunday lunchtime in France. Le Président a souligné à quel point il avait été heureux de voir des nations telles que la Colombie, l'Iran, la Tunisie etc. rejoindre des puissances telles que les USA ou la Russie sur les podiums. Dans la lignée de sa lutte pour un sport propre, l'IAAF avait mis en place pour Daegu un programme antidopage sans précédent, qui avait pour objectif d'effectuer un prélèvement sanguin auprès de chacun des participants sur une période de dix-sept jours. Ce programme inédit a été réussi. L'excellente ambiance dans le stade a été l'un des aspects les plus impressionnants de ces Championnats et les organisateurs viennent au demeurant de dévoiler les excellents chiffres enregistrés au niveau des spectateurs (consulter le pdf disponible sous "Related Content" à la droite de ce texte pour plus de détails). Les taux d'audience télévisés pour ces Championnats du Monde sont également très encourageants. Bien qu'à ce stade, l'IAAF ne soit en possession que de chiffres provisoires, on peut d'ores et déjà relever quelques éléments intéressants. Les compétitions ont été diffusées dans plus de 200 pays au travers du monde et on s'attend à ce que les volumes soient plus importants que jamais auparavant. En Corée, la couverture télévisée a été bien plus importante et meilleure que par le passé. Il y a eu dix fois plus de téléspectateurs suivant l'athlétisme en Corée que lors des derniers Championnats du Monde s'étant déroulés en Asie, voilà tout juste quatre ans. Lors d'Osaka 2007 nous avions une moyenne cumulée pour les neuf jours de compétition de 6,6 million de téléspectateurs, tandis qu'il y en a eu 65 millions pour les cinq premiers jours seulement (et donc sans que ne soit incluse la finale du 200m avec Bolt). On retiendra également qu'à la mi-parcours (quatre jours), le réseau paneuropéen Eurosport (qui diffuse cent heures de couverture) se déclarait ravi d'une audience cumulée de 28,6 millions, alors même qu'Osaka avait totalisé 37,6 millions de téléspectateurs pour la durée entière des championnats. Au Japon, notre partenaire TBS a enregistré des audiences cumulées pour les cinq premières journées, de 131 millions de téléspectateurs, avec des pics de 11,8 millions lors de la finale du 100m et de celle du Lancer de marteau, remportée par Koji Murofushi. Ces chiffres peuvent être comparés très favorablement avec les chiffres obtenus lors d'Osaka, lorsque TBS était le diffuseur hôte. En France, il y a eu une moyenne de 2,75 millions de téléspectateurs pour la finale du 100m, alors même qu'en raison du décalage horaire, celle-ci coïncidait avec l'heure du repas du midi dominical. On notera à cette occasion que la même épreuve, à Berlin, voilà deux ans, était programmée en prime time en France, mais avait attiré moins de téléspectateurs avec tout juste 2,3 millions. Following an IAAF Council meeting held this afternoon in the Hotel Inter-Burgo, the closing IAAF / LOC Press Conference of the 13th edition of the IAAF World Championships took place at Daegu stadium ahead of the final session of competition.

Trailing the defending world champion going into the fourth round of the World Championships triple jump final, Christian Taylor didn&rsquo;t panic. Instead, he remembered what his coach at the University of Florida had told him.
The result was a spectacular world-leading performance of 17.96m that earned him the gold medal at the age of 21 and left the silver to Phillips Idowu.
&ldquo;I am a competitor; I feel any athlete knows to turn on that switch,&rdquo; Taylor explained. &ldquo;Coach Dick Booth was always somebody that uses the analogy of a race car, the drag race, and you have that red switch and you had to hit it on. I did that on my fourth jump.
&ldquo;I do this event because it&rsquo;s the closest thing I can get to flying and I felt it when I hit that last jump. Coach Rana (Reider, his new coach in Atlanta, Georgia) got me really pumped and I looked at Dwight (Phillips) and he gave me a little salute. With that combination, I had what it took to get me where I am.&rdquo;
After leaving the pit, he ran in front of the camera and made a puzzling gesture. It turns out it is the University of Florida 'gator chomp', employed by students at college football games. Incredibly, he has another year of hospitality and tourism studies at the Gainesville, Florida institution.
After finishing his college season, he joined up with Dwight Phillips, the world long jump champion, and his coach Rana Reider in Atlanta and found that the camaraderie he experienced there was just like being on a college team with his friend, the man who took the bronze medal tonight, Will Claye. In the spectator seats, Phillips and the coach sat watching Taylor.
&ldquo;My coach definitely told me to calm down because it does get emotional,&rdquo; the new world champion said. &ldquo;The thing is I had to be prepared because the way Phillips was jumping you never knew. We have been going head to head all season. Coach Rana had to tell me calm down but, at the same time, be ready to respond because these guys are dangerous. If you look at the charts, these guys could have struck at any time.&rdquo;
Asked what he did in the days leading up to the triple jump final, he admits he was trackside watching Phillips win his fourth world title while Claye finished ninth.
&ldquo;To have Dwight in the same group and that &lsquo;family&rsquo;, he&rsquo;s like &ndash; I want to say a brother &ndash; but he&rsquo;s kind of old, he&rsquo;s kind of like a dad,&rdquo; he jokes. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s been just a great experience. This is just a stepping stone to the Olympics.&rdquo;
While it is clear Taylor is a proficient triple jumper, he is also an outstanding 400m runner with a personal best of 45.34. And, not so long ago, 2007 to be exact, he took the long jump bronze medal at the World Youth Championships.
&ldquo;I am going to do the 400m I think next year,&rdquo; he vows. &ldquo;I have been blessed with talent for that. I am not going to let it go to waste. I will run that at the beginning of the season, kind of get that base and then I will have to see when the championship season comes whether I will focus just on the triple jump.&rdquo;
Though he returns to classes next week, he is no longer eligible for NCAA competition having signed an endorsement contract with the Chinese athletics shoe company Li Ning. That means he can also accept the US$60,000 prize money that comes with his gold medal&nbsp;&ndash; a pretty lucrative beginning to a professional career.
Taylor&rsquo;s winning jump is the fifth best mark in history and tantalisingly close to the 18-metre barrier, which only two athletes have ever beaten, Kenny Harrison of the US and Jonathan Edwards. The Briton has held the world record of 18.29m since 1995 and when asked whether it would be a target in the future, Taylor demonstrated humility.
&ldquo;We compete to be remembered,&rdquo; he responds. &ldquo;Jonathan Edwards is the best. To be even in the same sentence is an honour but definitely you want to be remembered and to have the world record, especially one that has stuck for so long, it&rsquo;s definitely a goal. Right now the biggest thing is the win and just keep going day by day.&rdquo;
At the post-event press conference, Taylor introduced his father to the gathered press corps and announced what a blessing it was that he could share in the achievement. There is no celebration planned. Rather, he expects to get some much-needed sleep before heading back to Florida. Then he might get in a game of golf.
&ldquo;I play golf,&rdquo; he declares. &ldquo;I am a pretty good golfer, I probably wouldn&rsquo;t take any of you guys. I enjoy golf and my parents are from the islands so I am a big swimmer and in Florida I can just hop down to the beach.&rdquo;
Humble, talented and articulate, Christian Taylor is going to be around for a few more years, making the possibilities of a rematch with Philips Idowu and a healthy Teddy Tamgho a treat to look forward to. Taylor welcomes the competition &ndash; with a smile.

<div>Tatyana Lysenko was 16 when she first picked up the hammer. More specifically, she was picked for the hammer. "It was coach Nikolai Beloborodov who found me and taught me the hammer ," Lysenko said. "That was his idea, not mine, to become a hammer thrower. And now I like it and I'm very thankful to him that he started this journey." It's been an adventure with its share of bumps in the road, but reached a high point on Sunday night when the 27-year-old Lysenko won her first gold medal and second overall at the IAAF World Championships with a throw of 77.13m. Just as Koji Murofushi did in winning the men's gold six days ago, Lysenko uncorked consecutive season-bests on her first three throws. Any of the three (her first two were 76.80m and 77.09m) would have been enough to win the competition &nbsp;as newly minted world record-holder Betty Heidler never mounted a challenge and took the silver at 76.06m. "I did not think that [77.13m] would be enough to win today," Lysenko said. "I thought 77 metros would for sure be enough for a medal, but not enough for the win." Lysenko said she felt unease during each round, wondering how long her mark would remain on top. "I was expecting not only from Betty Heidler, but also [bronze medalist] Zhang [Wenxiu] and Yipsi Moreno and Anita Wlodarczyk because they can throw very far," she said. "So I was not sure until the sixth round what will happen." Lysenko, a former World record-holder, came into the competition with a best this year of 75.70m, off her career best of 77.80m that she threw in 2006 and which currently stands as third on the all-time list. She needed just one throw of 71.94m to get through the qualifying round. "Everything went well," she said. "I was ready for a kind of battle and I was expecting good results." Under Beloborodov's tutelage, Lysenko showed her potential by finishing fifth at both the European under-23 championships and world student games in 2003. She made it to the 2004 Athens Olympics, but failed to qualify for the final. The next year, things took off as she won a bronze medal at the 2005 World championships in Helsinki, which she followed up with victories in 2006 at the European Cup and European championship and a second place at the World Cup. Putting the disappointment of Berlin behind her, Lysenko won the IAAF/VTB Bank Continental Cup in 2010 and finished second to Heidler at the European championships. Now that she has a World title, Lysenko said she would renew a quest for the World record, which Heidler set at 79.42 in Halle on 21 May. "I will try for the World record and work on that," Lysenko said, adding, "The record is now very far." Being back in competition has given Lysenko renewed incentive to perform well. "It was just my desire to throw that helped to produce this," she said of her victory at Daegu Stadium. <div>After her latest high profile 800m victory Mariya Savinova confirmed herself as the world's most improved performer and now undisputed No. 1 since placing fifth at the last Championships two years ago.Caster Semenya on that occasion was a runaway winner and in fairness the defending champion did everything almost perfectly right to retain her gold medal in a whirlwind two laps of the Daegu 2011 track where all of the eight finalists finished in under two minutes.But on this occasion it was Russia's Savinova who since that setback in Berlin's 1936 Olympic stadium has added the IAAF World Indoor, European Outdoor and Indoor titles to her collection of trophies and came out on top wining in the fastest time of her life of 1:55.87. Semenya lowered her season's best to 1:56.35 - her second SB of the Championships - with Janeth Jepkosgei the Kenyan winner of the 2007 gold medal doing likewise when taking third in a blanket finish for the bronze medal. Jepkosgei just held off US champion Alysia Johnson Montano by 0.06sec with a time of 1:57.42 both season's bests, while Ekaterina Kostetskaya the Russian girlfriend of Australia's Olympic Pole Vault champion Steve Hooker was also in the mix finishing in 1:58.42. It was Jepkosgei who forced the pace over the first circuit powering through 200 in 26.61 and then passing the bell in 55.5 as the pack sped around the bend and down the backstraight with all of them still having the gold medal on their minds.Then Semenya made a positive move and broke clear as she hit the front after 600 passed in 1:26.07 and increasing her space it seemed a second successive victory might be on the cards for her. But Savinova 26, well down on the pace at the bell, was getting her act together and moved with purpose around the final bend where Semenya looking quite awesome was blowing away the challenge of a fading Jepkosgei.It seemed the 20-year-old South African might hold on but her more compact rival, particularly her long striding legs, caught her 15 metres from the line to score another celebrated victory. Semenya remaining upbeat despite the narrow loss, said: "The race was pretty good. Even though I got silver I really enjoyed it better than two years ago. I know I won gold in Berlin, but I am feeling much better today."Savinova's clocking which improved her world lead and then personal best of 1:56.95 she posted at last month's Russian Championships, saw her become the first woman from her country to clinch the global crown since Liliya Nurutdinova won in the colours of what was then the Soviet Union 20 years ago in Tokyo. Women's 800m - Final - Savinova pushed to 1:55.87 career best to claim title

<div>With the greatest 5000m performance any Briton has ever produced - and there has been a long line of world beaters nurtured by that tiny island - Mo Farah brilliantly won the gold medal after a magnificent and tense last lap burn up. The speed of this year's world leader won him a fantastic battle over the final lap where he clocked a flying final 400 of 52.61 to become the first European winner of the gold medal since Ireland's Eamonn Coghlan lifted the title at the inaugural Championships in Helsinki in 1983. Farah's time of 13:23.36 was immaterial, what was important was that his legs kept rotating particularly during a thrilling battle down the home straight to fetch him home in pole position against 2007 champion Bernard Lagat and Imane Merga who along Dejen Gebremeskel finished fractions of second behind him. [NOTE: Merga was later disqualified for stepping inside the curb. See full decision following the report.] Lagat, the runner-up two years ago, moved into an attacking position on the final bend and gave every ounce of energy in his body to get past his Brit rival who led into the final 100m, &nbsp;but to no avail and finished second in 13:23.64. Merga who took the 10,000m bronze medal when Farah earned the silver behind his fellow Ethiopian Ibrahim Jeilan in the 10,000m final the previous weekend wilted around 10 metres from the line and had to settle for another third place in 13:23.78. Then came his team mate Gebremeskel, the 21-year-old former World junior bronze medallist taking part in his first senior Championships, but saw himself run out of a medal by by just 0.14sec. Isiah Koech the real baby of the field aged just 17, was the first Kenyan finisher behind 13:24.95 but that might have been Thomas Longosiwa if he hadn't had a brush of legs with Lagat with just over 600m remaining and fell to the track but picked himself up to place seventh in 13:26.73. Separating the pair was a third Ethiopian Abera Kuma who did much of the pacemaking until the eruption of pace down the final straight by the first four who were separated by just 0.56sec and clocked 13:25.50. Indeed it was Kuma who led the field through the first 400 in 63.95 which clearly indicated if it continued a sub-13 min was out of the question and that was how the 12 1/2 lap race eventually played out. Koech with the pack not breaking up went through the first kilometre in 2:50.9 while it was Kuma at the next (5:35.6) with Hussain Jamaan Alhamdah from Saudi Arabia at the point through 3000 in 8:13.7 with the pre-race favourites still holding themselves back. Kuma was back in the lead through 4000 in 10:55.6 after inducing some pace and by this time Farah, was right up amongst the leaders with Lagat alongside, the latter positioned to cover any move. It didn't occur and with two laps remaining the cat and mouse game continued until one of the fastest final 400 burn ups produced a result which, after Lagat's win four years ago in Osaka, again saw African dominance of the gold medal broken. After an inconsistent start to her campaign, Berlin 2009 winner Caster Semenya from South Africa seems to be coming into shape at the perfect time, judging from her 1:58.07 run in the semis. World leader Mariya Savinova, who cruised to last year's European title, looked strong through the rounds as well. Kenyan Janeth Jepkosgei, the 2007 winner, and Jamaican Kenia Sinclair will have to be in PB shape to challenge. Heidler primed to regain title Kicking off action on the infield will be a rematch between the top-two finishers in the Hammer Throw two years ago: Poland’s reigning champion Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland, and Germany Betty Heidler. The Pole broke the World record in the Berlin final, with Heidler finishing second. But the German has been the top thrower the past two seasons, and wrestled the World record from Wlodarczyk earlier this season with a mammoth 79.42m throw. Heidler won in 2007 and if she repeats will be just the second two-time winner. Triple Jump – Idowu to become first to take back-to-back TJ titles? The men's Triple Jump looks quite evenly matched, with Phillips Idowu needing to produce the goods to defend. The Briton has a 17.59 season's best, a mark three others have surpassed - Cuban Alexis Copello, American rising star Christian Taylor, and Ukrainian newcomer Sheryf El-Sheryf. Taylor and El-Sheryf have yet to back up their big marks, giving Copello the edge, although 2007 winner Nelson Evora, on the mend from injury, arrives with a victory at the World University Games. A stat not in the Briton's favour: no one has every won back-to-back titles. Jamaica vs USA in both 4x100m Relays - The Championships conclude with the women’s and men’s 4x100m Relays where the US-Jamaica rivalry continues. On paper, the Island nation’s team looks far superior in the men’s side of things, where Usain Bolt will be looking for a follow-up to last night’s sizzling 200m victory. Daegu 2011 – Expected Highlights - Day Nine, 4 September

<div>Christian Taylor: remember that name because it we didn&rsquo;t know it before tonight we certainly do now. A new star was born inside an electric Daegu Stadium as the U.S. athlete struck the jackpot courtesy of a sensational fourth round leap of 17.96m to climb to fifth on the all-time World lists and become the youngest ever winner of this title. The 21-year-old Floridian has been one of the finds of the season improving by almost a metre this year. He first served notice of his gold medal winning potential by leaping to a wind-assisted 17.80m at the NCAA Championships in June and then again when winning with a legal best of 17.68m in his last pre-Daegu competition at London's Samsung Diamond League fixture. Yet while many viewed Taylor as a potential dark horse few would have predicted quite the impact he would make. Phillips Idowu, the defending champion, had to settle for silver with a best of 17.77m &ndash; the second longest jump of his career. It still means that no athlete has won back-to-back World triple jump titles. The U.S. also took bronze thanks to another of their young guns as Will Claye went out to a personal best of 17.50m. Aged only 20 Claye became the youngest ever medallist in his event in World Championships history to further illustrate the exciting future the US has in this event. Idowu led after round one after putting out an impressive marker of 17.56m and clenched both fists in satisfaction. The 2007 World champion Nelson Evora of Portugal also showed his gradual return to full fitness was continuing as he set a season&rsquo;s best 17.35m to hold the silver medal position after the opening round. There was also a good early jump from Sweden&rsquo;s 2003 World champion Christian Olsson with a 17.23m leap to take third. Claye also looked in eye-catching form but a jump which looked in the 17.30m zone was declared invalid. Round two saw no overall change to the medal picture, although once again the 20-year-old Claye leapt a marginal foul which looked to have momentarily threatened the lead mark. Idowu went out 17.38m. The competition, which has hitherto been low key stepped up in quality in round three. Claye, who preceded Idowu in the running order, laid claim to his medal bid by backing up his &ldquo;long foul&rdquo; in round two with a massive new personal of 17.50m. The US athlete celebrated wildly to move into the silver medal position. The Briton then followed with a bigger 17.70m but responded to the effort by standing motionless at the end of the runway for a few seconds without a flicker of emotion. Perhaps he knew he needed more to seal the gold. If so, he was right. Claye&rsquo;s countryman Taylor then got in on the act leaping out to 17.40m to move into the bronze medal position from Evora who was relegated to fourth. It was though a memorable round four that proved decisive. Taylor, who possesses lightning speed on the runway leapt out to his monster world leading mark of 17.96m before he set off sprinting out of the pit in sheer disbelief at what he had achieved. The pressure was now thrust on Idowu but to his credit he refused to buckle and scrapping for his life he bound out to 17.77m his best of the competition. Understandably, round five could not live up to the excitement of the preceding stanza as Idowu went out to 17.48m and Taylor opted to pass. Cuba&rsquo;s Alexis Copello, the 2009 World bronze medallist, broke the sand at 17.47m to consolidate fourth and move within 0.03 of bronze. The final round did not add to the drama as none of the eight finalists improved their respective positions. Taylor concluded a thrilling competition with a slightly ugly 15.64m. Yet we will not remember tonight for his sixth round effort - we will remember it for the jump of beauty and his 17.96m in round four. Taylor&rsquo;s gold medal winning jump was the second longest in World Championships history behind Jonathan Edwards&rsquo; world record of 18.29m achieved 16 years ago in Gothenburg. <div>Tatyana Lysenko led from the front to cause an upset and defeat World record holder Betty Heidler in a high class final which witnessed three women throw beyond 75m for the first time in World Championships history.This was, though, all about the Russian who thoroughly deserved her gold medal after registering the three longest throws in the competition and was never seriously challenged. &nbsp;Heidler, who before today had not been beaten in a final since March, simply could not reproduce the form which took her to the World record of 79.42m in May and had to settle for a second World silver medal with a best of 76.06m.Wenxiu Zhang plundered her second World bronze with a first round 75.03m in what was her fifth world hammer final. The Chinese athlete had also climbed the third tier of the podium at the 2008 Olympics. &nbsp;Heidler opened with a nervy red flag after the hammer rattled into the cage for an underwhelming start. Meanwhile, Wenxiu &ndash; who had led the qualifiers &ndash; showed she was a force to be reckoned with throwing 75.03m, her second longest throw ever.Yet the quality of the competition was soon to step up another notch as former World record holder Tatyana Lysenko powered the hammer out to a season&rsquo;s best 76.80m &ndash; exactly 1.00m shy of her lifetime best.The defending champion Anita Wlodarczyk &ndash; who has endured a troubled year through injury &ndash; hurled the hammer out to a season&rsquo;s best 73.56m to take third. Cuba&rsquo;s Yipsi Moreno - making a record equalling sixth world women&rsquo;s hammer final - opened with a 73.29m for fourth.Lysenko extended her stranglehold on the competition in round two with a mighty 77.09m.Heidler also registered her first legal through of the competition a 73.96m effort to advance to third but the other lead contenders failed to improve on their opening efforts.In the third round, it was all about Lysenko again as she marginally extended her lead this time hurling the metal ball out time to 77.13m &ndash; the 12th longest ever throw. The rest of the field continued to play second fiddle to the 27-year-old Russian. Heidler improving her distance with 74.70m, if not her overall position, to remain third. Moreno replaced Wlodarczyk in fourth with 74.48m.At halfway it was Lysenko from Wenxiu and then Heidler occupying the medal spots.Round four was a damp squib as none of the lead five improved. Even Lysenko brought her sequence of improving in each of the first three rounds to an end with a 74.51m effort. In round five Heidler crept closer into the gold medal picture with her best of the day 76.06m to leapfrog Wenxiu into the silver medal position. Lysenko fired her fourth throw beyond 75m - with 75.05m.The final round was also a slight disappointment as there was no change to the lead five positions, both Heidler and a triumphant Lysenko ending their competition with fouls.In a further couple of historical footnotes; Zalina Marghieva finished eighth with a best 70.27m to secure a best ever World Championships finish for Moldova. <DIV>Daegu, KoreaTrinidad and Tobago beat a Bolt-less Jamaica, the USA ran the fastest time in the world this year. That was the heats of the men’s 4x100 metres relay on the final night of competition in Daegu. Who would come out on top in the final was the question to be answered later in the night. With three heats and only the first two in each to advance to the final along with the next two fastest, the racing was fierce and the penalty for a bad mistake usually elimination. The USA - Trell Kimmons, Justin Gatlin, Maurice Mitchell and Travis Padgett – won the first heat in 37.79, reducing the World lead from the 37.90 a US team ran in Italy in July. After a series of relay mishaps in recent championships, the US got the baton around smoothly enough. Not so second-placed France, 38.38, for whom lead-off runner Teddy Tinmar almost overran second leg runner Christophe Lemaitre, and the final exchange between Yannick Lesourd and surprise individual 100 finalist Jimmy Vicault was botched. Brazil crossed the line third in 38.48, but not without drama as third leg runner Nilson Andre crashed to the track after completing the change to anchor leg runner Yazalde Nascimento. It was all for nothing, however, as Brazil was disqualified, elevating Japan (38.66) to third place. Usain Bolt, who won the 200 metres on Saturday night, was rested from the heat, but he was in the call-room with his team-mates before the race. In his absence, Dexter Lee ran the final leg. Trinidad and Tobago’s Richard Thompson was too strong for Lee on the final leg, taking his team to a win in 37.91 to Jamaica’s 38.07. St Kitts and Nevis were third in a national record 38.47, which advanced them to the final for the first time ever. Kim Collins, 2003 World champion at 100 metres and a bronze medallist here, ran the second leg. Heat three was the slowest, with Harry Aikines-Aryeetey bringing Great Britain & Northern Ireland home in first place in 38.29, just ahead of Poland, 38.37.
