Two-time world medallist Masatora Kawano clocked a world record* of 2:21:47 to win the 35km race walk at the All Japan Race Walking competition &ndash; a World Athletics Race Walking Tour Bronze meeting &ndash; in Takahata on Sunday (27).
It&rsquo;s the first performance to meet the world record requirements that were set out by World Athletics in 2022 when the discipline was made official, stipulating that any performance faster than 2:22:00 &ndash; provided it also met all of the other standard criteria &ndash; would be submitted for world record ratification.
Kawano set out at a steady pace and went through 5km as part of a seven-man group in 20:30. The tempo soon increased and he reached 10km in 40:25, putting him on course to finish inside 2:22:00.
By 15km (1:00:30), just three men remained in contact with Kawano: Satoshi Maruo, Kazuki Takahashi and Kento Yoshikawa. Of those, Takahashi was the first to fade, leaving the lead trio to reach 20km in 1:20:58 with a 23-second lead. Yoshikawa was next to lose contact; by 25km he trailed Kawano and Satoshi by more than a minute, then he dropped out soon after.
With less than 10km to go, world bronze medallist Kawano started to edge ahead of Maruo, the fourth-place finisher over 50km at the 2017 World Championships. By 30km Kawano led by 34 seconds, and that grew to almost three minutes by the time he crossed the finish line in 2:21:47.
Maruo finished second in 2:24:24 while Takahashi held on to third place in 2:26:18. The first seven men finished inside 2:30.
With less than a year until the Japanese capital hosts the World Athletics Championships, Kawano&rsquo;s performance puts him in the frame as one of the host nation&rsquo;s leading medal contenders.
Elsewhere in Takahata, two-time world champion Toshikazu Yamanishi won the 20km in 1:17:56 from Hiroto Jusho (1:18:46). Masumi Fuchise won the women&rsquo;s 35km in 2:52:38.

Kawano sets world 35km race walk record in Takahata

The Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) held its <a href="https://www.jaaf.or.jp/relayfes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Relay Festival </a>across two days from 5 to 6 October 2024 at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo. On the opening day, the Local Organising Committee hosted a Dream Relay event to mark one year until the World Athletics Championships.
The event named 'Dream Relay' featured a team of four athletes; Haruka Kitaguchi (women&rsquo;s javelin), Abdul Hakim Sani Brown (men&rsquo;s sprint), Nozomi Tanaka (women&rsquo;s middle and long-distance running) and Yuki Hashioka (men&rsquo;s long jump) who have been appointed as WCH Tokyo 25 Athlete Ambassadors. In addition, Japanese actor Yuji Oda, whose assumption of the role of Special Ambassador had just been announced, made a surprise appearance and served as the relay starter, further energising those in attendance.
WCH Tokyo 25 is currently preparing for next year&rsquo;s Championships, which is scheduled to be held at the Japan National Stadium from 13 to 21 September 2025. It announced its Special Ambassador and Athlete Ambassadors on 5 October.
Yuji Oda served as the main sportscaster for Japanese broadcaster TBS&rsquo;s televised coverage of 13 World Athletics Championships events, from Athens 97 to Oregon 22. His passion for track and field combined with his impactful storytelling has made him a beloved figure among Japanese audiences. Having spent a significant part of his career contributing to raising the profile of athletics in Japan, he has returned to the championships after a short absence to play an ambassadorial role for the local organising committee. In his new role, he is expected to communicate the appeal and value of the event by drawing on his unique storytelling skills and wealth of experience.
The five athletes chosen as Athlete Ambassadors are Haruka Kitaguchi, Abdul Hakim Sani Brown, Nozomi Tanaka, Asuka Terada (women&rsquo;s 100m hurdles) and Yuki Hashioka. All of them have represented Japan at numerous international competitions, including the World Athletics Championships. In addition to their athlete activities, they will work with Oda to promote the appeal of WCH Tokyo 25 in and outside Japan through appearances at official events and in the media as well as various other engagements.
The Dream Relay was the first memorable activation for these athletes following their appointment as ambassadors. It was held at the Japan National Stadium, the same venue that will be used for next year&rsquo;s Championships. The announcement of the Dream Relay featuring Kitaguchi, Sani Brown, Tanaka and Hashioka was made at the beginning of October, and participants in the relay festival and countless others gathered in the stands despite the rain to see the top athletes in action. When Oda appeared as a surprise guest, the stadium erupted into cheers and applause.
After greeting the spectators with the words, &ldquo;Hello, I&rsquo;m back!&rdquo;, Oda shared his own thoughts as well as some anecdotes while interacting with the athletes. He also expressed his passion for the World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Tokyo for the first time in 34 years since the third edition in 1991. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m definitely going to support this event&rdquo;, he shared with the audience. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ll be here to watch every second, so let&rsquo;s support it together!&rdquo;.

The Dream Relay, in which Oda served as the starter, featured four teams. In addition to the Athlete Ambassadors team, which was made up of Hashioka, Tanaka, Kitaguchi and Sani Brown, in that order, a team of athletes who had competed in previous WCH events was formed consisting of Kaito Kawabata (4th place in the men&rsquo;s 4x400m relay at WCH Oregon 22), Hiroki Yanagita (5th place in the men&rsquo;s 4x100m relay at WCH Budapest 23), Kirara Shiraishi (bronze medal in the men&rsquo;s 4x100m relay at WCH Doha 19), and Kumiko Okada (6th place in the women&rsquo;s 20km race walk at WCH Doha 19). The two teams competed against the Akiruno Kakekko Club, a team of local elementary school students, and the YUMEOLY Athletics Club, a team of junior high school students. The junior high athlete team took the lead from the early stages of the race and won by a large margin. The Athlete Ambassador team, whose members couldn&rsquo;t stop smiling every time they passed the baton, came in second. Third place went to the elementary school athlete team, which overtook race walker Okada on the home straight, and the team of WCH athletes finished fourth.

After the Dream Relay, the four Athlete Ambassadors and Special Ambassador Oda appeared on stage for a press conference, in which the appointment of each ambassador was announced again. The ambassadors then shared their thoughts on having the championships back in their home country in one year&rsquo;s time.
Having been an iconic fixture of the World Athletics Championships for 25 years, Oda reminded the audience that the upcoming event will be the first championships held in Tokyo in 34 years, adding that it may be the last opportunity for people of his generation to watch a home games. &ldquo;After I realised yesterday that the WCH Tokyo 25 would be a once-in-a-lifetime event for me, I was unable to sleep&rdquo;, he shared with a grin. With his trademark wit showing no sign of dimming following his absence from the sportscasting booth since Oregon 22, Oda&rsquo;s showcasing of his wealth of knowledge made the press conference a resounding success.

Haruka Kitaguchi referred to the World Athletics Championships as &ldquo;a festival of track and field&rdquo;. Kitaguchi, who has made consecutive appearances at WCH since Doha 19, also said that &ldquo;the World Athletics Championships is one of the key athletics meets for myself and other competitors&rdquo;, and that it inspires her to perform to the best of her potential. Kitaguchi earned the bronze medal at Oregon 22 and the gold medal at Budapest 23. Regarding next year&rsquo;s championships, she commented, &ldquo;I hope that many Japanese fans and fans from across the world visit the Japan National Stadium. There are lots of things that you can only feel if you are there in person, so I hope that people come to the venue&rdquo;.
After making her first appearance in the 5000m at Doha 19, Nozomi Tanaka competed in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m at Oregon 22 and in the 1500m and 5000m at Budapest 23, where she finished 8th in the 5000m. In response to a question about the World Athletics Championships, she replied, &ldquo;If children who play sports are asked about their future dreams, I think the most common answer will be that they want to participate in the Olympics. I may be a bit of a contrarian, however, because when I was at high school and envisioning my future, I would imagine participating in the World Athletics Championships. I find the championships more accessible and more fascinating than the Olympic Games because the World Athletics Championships is just for track and field. And because it is held at a shorter interval of two years, I can measure my development more closely. I see it as a necessary competition for my running career&rdquo;. Referring to Tanaka as the &ldquo;Japanese Hassan&rdquo; in expectation of her following in the footsteps of Sifan Hassan (a Dutch runner who, in an unprecedented feat, secured gold medals in both the 5000m and 10,000m and a bronze medal in the 1500m at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as well as a gold medal in the marathon and bronze medals in the 5000m and 10,000m at the Paris 2024 Olympics), Oda asked her about what disciplines she would pursue going forward. &ldquo;Since I have met the entry standards for the 1500m and 5000m, I&rsquo;m aiming for medals in those disciplines,&rdquo; she replied. Turning to the subject of the venue, she added, &ldquo;At the Paris Olympics, the stadium was packed with people even in the qualifying rounds on, and I was really impressed by how people overseas look forward to the qualifying races just as much as the finals. I hope we can expect the same atmosphere next year&rdquo;.
&ldquo;For me, the World Athletics Championships are the ultimate stage for track and field&rdquo;, explained Yuki Hashioka, who has appeared in three consecutive World Athletics Championships since finishing 8th at Doha 19. &ldquo;While track and field is certainly a highlight of the Olympics, there are many other disciplines attracting people&rsquo;s attention&rdquo;. The six-place finisher in long jump at Tokyo 2020 Olympics added, &ldquo;The World Championships is a festival that is truly dedicated to track and field, and I view it as a special competition where I can demonstrate what I have devoted my life to&rdquo;. When asked about the atmosphere at the Paris Olympics, he reflected on the scene from the morning sessions on, saying, &ldquo;I was impressed by the huge turnout and amazed by the unity among the spectators. In Japan, spectators watch quietly, but in Europe, they shout out their support. I hope my performance can arouse some enthusiasm among even the quieter Japanese spectators&rdquo;.
Abdul Hakim Sani Brown has represented Japan at five consecutive World Athletics Championships starting with Beijing 15, when he was still in high school. He has achieved a number of notable records, including becoming the youngest athlete to be a finalist in the 200m (at London 17) and excelling in the 4x100m relay (bronze at Doha 19 and 5th place at Budapest 23). He also established himself as a finalist in the men&rsquo;s 100m at two consecutive World Athletics Championships, namely Oregon and Budapest. &ldquo;The result of this year&rsquo;s Paris Olympics was the most frustrating result of my life&rdquo;, he recalled. &ldquo;Although I am evolving, the world is progressing at a faster pace. I felt that I needed to work harder and devote my life to this sport in order to surpass other athletes. I am determined to win in the 100m, as well as the 200m and relay&rdquo;. During the press conference, Sani Brown had the audience laughing when he offered a perfect response to some gentle ribbing by Oda. When asked what the World Championships meant to him, however, he took on a serious expression. &ldquo;It makes me feel truly alive&rdquo;, he replied. &ldquo;I want to give my best-ever performance in front of spectators in Japan. I hope that lots of people come to the stadium to see us perform in the flesh&rdquo;.

Following Terada&rsquo;s video message, Oda made the observation that if you are not at the stadium you can never know the &ldquo;silence that falls as tens of thousands of people hold their breath right before the start of the 100m&rdquo; or the &ldquo;different parabolas drawn by each javelin thrower&rdquo;. He concluded by saying, &ldquo;The trajectory of the javelin as it rises like a firework, or the sensation you get like an athlete is jumping in slow motion&mdash;these are the moments that you can only experience at the stadium. Next year&rsquo;s event should be particularly special among the biannual World Athletics Championships since it is held on home turf. I really recommend that the people of Japan take advantage of such a rare opportunity&rdquo;.

On 25 September 2024, WCH Tokyo 25&rsquo;s Medal Design Selection Committee held a meeting to select the standout medal design for next year&rsquo;s Championships.
The Medal Design Selection Committee is chaired by Gen Matsuzaki, a professor at the Department of Design at Chiba Institute of Technology&rsquo;s Faculty of Creative Engineering. He is joined by six additional members, including Shin Azuma, a professor at the Department of System Design at Hosei University, and Miyuki Tamai, CEO of Feel Good Creation Inc. The committee also features four young athletes, whose fresh perspectives enriched the selection process.
World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 competetors, Yukiko Umeno (Women 20km race walk, Juntendo University) and Maki Saito (Women discus throw, Tokai University), JAAF Diamond Athlete, Rui Kitada (Men pole vault,&nbsp;Nippon Sport Science University), and World Athletics Relay Bahamas 24 competitior, Souta Miwa (4x100 meters relay, Keio University), collaborated with experts to select a medal design that they themselves would be proud to compete for.&nbsp;

The medal design process began in July 2024, following interviews with junior athletes. Ryo Nakagawa, Brand Director and creator of the WCH Tokyo 25 official logo, crafted three medal design proposals inspired by his own works. During the meeting, the Medal Design Selection Committee reviewed the options and selected a design that is sure to inspire athletes to claim it as their own.

Expressing his enthusuasm towards the project, Brand Director Ryo Nakagawa stated, &ldquo;I presented 3 medal designs selected through discussion from the 10 medal designs I created. From the time I designed the logo, I had an image in my mind of what kind of event I wanted the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 to be, and what kind of beautiful design I wanted everything to be&rdquo;.
Chairman of the Medal Design Selection Committee, Gen Matsuzaki commented on the decision process, &ldquo;The three proposals presented were all of a high degree of perfection, each showing the skill and thought of the designers, and each giving a sense of Japan and Tokyo&rdquo;.
He added, &ldquo;We received encouraging feedback from the athletes, who expressed that seeing the medals in person and being part of the selection process has increased their motivation to win one at next year&rsquo;s Championships&rdquo;.

Athletes and Experts Unite to Select Medal Design for World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25

Representatives from WCH Tokyo 25 and World Athletics (WA) completed their second site visit ahead of next years&rsquo; Championships. The site visits were conducted from late September to early October.
Conducted as part of the final stage of the planning phase, the site visit included meetings during which the Local Organising Committee (LOC) provided updates on the progress made since the last site visit and outlined plans for further preparations ahead of next year&rsquo;s Championships.
Welcoming WA <span style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">representatives, the LOC President Mitsugi Ogata stated, "Our goal is to create an unforgettable nine days for athletes, spectators, and fans watching TVs around the world. We will continue to strengthen our collaboration with everyone at WA and all stakeholders as we prepare for the Championships&rdquo;.
Yuko Arimori, a Vice President at the Japan Association of Athletics Federations and a member of the WA Council, also welcomed the <span style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">representatives while reminiscing about her own performance at the last Championships in Tokyo. She stated, "I made my global debut as an athlete right here in Tokyo at the World Athletics Championships in 1991. I sincerely hope that next year&rsquo;s event will inspire athletes from Japan and around the world to reach their full potential&rdquo;.
&nbsp;The WA <span style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">delegation visited key facilities, including the Japan National Stadium, training venues, hotels, and the Marathon and Race Walk courses. They assessed the status of essential equipment for event operations, room arrangements, and the flow of athletes and spectators.
Additionally, meetings were held to discuss operational matters for the event, where various aspects of the LOC's plans were reviewed.

Marton Gyulai, WA's Director of Competitions and Events, summarised the site visit by stating, "The LOC has made significant progress in all areas." He further emphasised, "The World Athletics Championships is the biggest sporting event on the calendar for 2025. Together, we&rsquo;ll continue with preparations to host an outstanding event in Tokyo&rdquo;. 
&nbsp;Based on the results of the site visit, the LOC will push ahead with preparations for next years&rsquo; Championships.
The World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 will take place from 13 to 21 September 2025.
&nbsp;Note: A site visit is an inspection conducted to assess the progress of event preparations. This involves at least two visits by WA and other stakeholders to the host city, during which meetings with the LOC and venue inspections take place.

Haruka Kitaguchi, the reigning world champion in javelin, secured a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics and has successfully defended her title at the Diamond League Finals for two consecutive years.
Abdul Hakim Sani Brown has established himself as a finalist in the men&rsquo;s 100m at two consecutive World Athletics Championships in Oregon and Budapest.
Nozomi Tanaka, the Japanese record-holder in both the women&rsquo;s 1500m and 5000m, is determined to make a strong showing in both events at the next championships in Tokyo.
Last year, Asuka Terada showcased her talent by winning the women&rsquo;s 100m hurdles at the JAAF Athletics Championships.
Yuki Hashioka, who finished sixth in the long jump at the Tokyo Olympics, continues to make significant strides in his athletics journey.

Ambassadors for WCH Tokyo 25 announced

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe visited Japan and met with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, alongside the Local Organising Committee of World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 President Mitsugi Ogata, to seek cooperation for the upcoming World Championships.
President Coe expressed his admiration for Japan's outstanding performance at the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, particularly the track and field team's remarkable achievements. "Let me congratulate Japan on the outstanding performance of your teams in Paris, both in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. That was a Herculean performance, and I'm delighted that again, the Japanese track and field team performed with distinction", he praised. Coe also highlighted the progress in ticket sales, noting that 170,000 tickets have already been sold, indicating strong momentum as preparations move forward smoothly.

Additionally, Coe welcomed the announcement of seventh sponsor company for Tokyo 25, calling it "a significant milestone," which reflects the popularity of athletics in Japan. He stated, &ldquo;my ambition as the president of World Athletics is to have a full stadium at our championships&rdquo;.
Regarding the recent "One Year to Go" event hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Coe applauded the initiative, saying, &ldquo;congratulations on the huge success of your celebrations and the key messaging, particularly to local communities".

Governor Koike reaffirmed Tokyo's commitment, stating, "We will make every effort to ensure that the championships will leave a lasting legacy for the future of Tokyo". She also requested continued close collaboration with World Athletics. The LOC president Ogata expressed his vision, saying, "We&rsquo;re creating an environment where all athletes can showcase their best performances in front of packed crowds".
Later that day, President Coe visited President of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly, Satoshi Udagawa, who welcomed him and noted, "We hope to share Japanese culture with the world at next year&rsquo;s World Athletics Championships, something we didn&rsquo;t fully accomplish during Tokyo 2020". Udagawa further emphasized the Assembly&rsquo;s commitment to supporting the event.

Courses revealed amid two days of celebrations in downtown Tokyo
 In celebration of the one-year countdown to the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 (WCH Tokyo 25), the local organising committee has announced the marathon and race walk courses. The events will start and finish at the Japan National Stadium, featuring a route designed to showcase Tokyo&rsquo;s unique charm, history and culture, and to provide a fitting stage for the world&rsquo;s top athletes.
<h3>Features of the marathon and race walk course</h3>
The marathon events on 14 and 15 September 2025 will commence at the Japan National Stadium, with the initial segment featuring challenging inclines and descents that will test the athletes' resilience. After the first 5 kilometres, the course becomes predominantly flat. Competitors will pass near the Tokyo Dome, a hub for sports and entertainment, and around 8 kilometres into the race, they will reach Jimbocho, well known as one of the world's largest antiquarian book districts.
From Jimbocho, competitors will complete two laps of a 13-kilometre circuit. This circuit includes three turnaround points per lap and will take runners through Akihabara, renowned for its subculture; Nihonbashi, a historic commercial and cultural centre in Japan since the Edo era; Ginza, known for its blend of historical and cutting-edge atmosphere; the lush and scenic Imperial Palace; and Tokyo Station, with its striking red brick architecture.
The final stretch takes runners back to the Japan National Stadium. The challenging climb from around the 38 to 40 kilometre mark will be a crucial point that could significantly influence the outcome of the race. Overcoming this difficult section will lead runners to the cheering crowds waiting at the finish line at the stadium.
The race walk course also begins at the Japan National Stadium, featuring an initial climb and a serpentine route within the stadium grounds before entering the circuit near the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery.
This circuit, with almost a century of tradition and a central dome as its landmark, includes two mostly flat loops. For the 35km race walk, athletes will complete 16 laps of a 2-kilometre course, while the 20km race walk involves 18 laps of a 1-kilometre course. After finishing the laps, walkers will return to the Japan National Stadium via the stadium grounds and a downhill section.
With a course layout designed for both comfort and strategy, these routes offer a stage worthy of determining the world's best. The races promise to be captivating and unmissable for competitors, spectators along the route, and viewers worldwide.
The announcement of the marathon and race walk courses forms part of the local organising committee&rsquo;s celebrations marking one year to go to the global event. On Friday (13 September), the Tokyo Metropolitan Government launched its one year to go ceremony at the Tokyo Dome City LaQua, featuring Kentaro Sato, who competed in the men's 400m and 4x400m at the Paris Olympics, and Asuka Terada, the former Japanese record-holder in the women's 100m hurdles. The two-day programme features training demonstrations, interviews, a quiz show and more.

The World Athletics Championships is the world&rsquo;s largest sporting event of 2025, and is returning to Japan for the first time in 18 years. <h3>Activities at the World Athletics Championships</h3>
Otsuka will provide the ionic drink POCARI SWEAT, which is available in more than 20 territories, as the official sports drink to support athletes and event officials by replenishing hydration and electrolytes (ions) and efficiently cooling the body. Otsuka will also support heat countermeasures by disseminating information to athletes and spectators.
Otsuka aims to further contribute to the event&rsquo;s sustainability measures by implementing environmentally friendly initiatives during the WCH Tokyo 25, such as the promotion of &lsquo;bottle-to-bottle&rsquo; horizontal recycling, whereby PET bottles used during the WCH Tokyo 25 are collected and recycled into new PET bottles.

Day-by-day guide to the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25

Tokyo will host the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 (WCH Tokyo 25) between 13-21 September 2025. During this time, the Japanese capital expects to host thousands of athletes, media, staff and spectators from all over the world. Volunteers play a vital role in the delivery of the championships in various areas, including hospitality for athletes, event staff, and spectators service.
WCH Tokyo 25 will be the highest profile sports event to be staged in Tokyo next year, attracting more than 2,000 athletes from 200 countries, as athletes build up to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
WCH Tokyo 25 is planning to recruit around 3,000 volunteers to support its delivery of the Championships across the areas of Administrative support, Media support, Guidance and information support, Hospitality support, Medical support, and Events support.. Volunteer recruitment is open from 1 November until 16 December 2024.
Volunteers will be located at the Japan National Stadium, practice sites, hotels, and airports around the city. They will largely be required between the end of August -23 September 2025 and must be available to undertake a minimum of 7 days (shifts) during this period and attend a training day.
The volunteer activity time, including break time, will be approximately 8 hours a day.
We warmly welcome applications from individuals who are enthusiastic about being part of this exciting event and eager to share in this unique experience.

A list of municipalities interested in hosting training camps has been published. The Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) compiled the list after reviewing the intentions of each Prefectural Athletics Association and the Inter-University Athletics Union of Japan to host training camps.
This information will be shared with member federations of each country through World Athletics (WA). Member federations can use this list to negotiate and communicate directly with municipalities.
