The world record-holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has decided not to compete in the hurdles, providing a fresh perspective to witness her brilliance at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 in the 400 meters.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Athing Mu, whose potential to compete in multiple events has made them some of the world’s most successful track and field athletes, will enter one event apiece at August’s world track and field championships, their coach Bobby Kersee told The Los Angeles Times — with McLaughlin-Levrone racing the 400 meters and Mu the 800, he said.
“We won our nationals, which is hard to win and we did it in good fashion, so I think that we want to continue moving forward with the challenge.” – Bobby Kersee, her coach told the LA Times.
The 23-years-old athlete didn’t run a single 400m hurdles in 2023, so this decision isn’t a huge surprise. Her runs in the 400 meters in Paris, New York City and at the US Nationals were more than promising. In Eugene, she won the national championships with an extraordinary 48.74 seconds performance. She became the 10th fastest woman in history.
“The double does not allow us, I think, the proper amount of time and recovery to do both, and I think the bigger challenge would obviously be to see how we can do in the 400.” – said Bob Kersee.
