WABudapest23 - about the logo header

The logo for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest is based on the visual framework defined by World Athletics. The new logo use the same shape defined by the international federation in 2019 and used by many competitions since then.

Hungary’s capital has always been famous for its hospitality and the beauty of its World Heritage sites. An emblematic part of this skyline is the Statue of Liberty on top of Gellért Hill, holding a palm branch. The 14-metre-tall charismatic woman figure is visible from almost every corner of the city, and is seen by all visitors. It is not surprising that over the years it has become one of the main symbols of Budapest.

We are proud of the World Championship’s logo, which draws inspiration from Zsigmond Kisfaludy Strobl’s Statue of Liberty. It reflects the complex symbolism, its connection to sports, the national image and heroism.

In addition to this symbol, the visual identity of the logo also carries an important message: it creates a link with the graphic world of comics and superheroes. We think that the world champions, olympic champions and athletes who push human physical limits every day are real superheroes living among us. They are the heroes who inspire everyday heroes and do more for their own health by walking, running and doing sport every day. These everyday heroes will meet the superheroes in Budapest in August 2023.

The main colours of the logo are orange and the shades of black, inspired by the colours of the Hungarian athletics, and red and green are the colours of the Hungarian flag while the white colour is part of both.

The launch of the logo was accompanied by a short video to showcase the beauty of Budapest. The film, which also highlights the dynamism of athletics, follows the Danube through the city and arrive to the main locations: the National Athletics Centre and Gellért Hill. In this way, the video both helps to interpret the logo and draws attention to Budapest and Hungary.
