Competition kicked off with the men’s 20km race walk on 1 August and ended with the women’s marathon on 11 August. That final event was won by Sifan Hassan, as the Dutch star completed a magnificent medal treble by getting marathon gold to go with her 5000m and 10,000m bronze medals. Two other athletes also claimed three athletics medals: Gabby Thomas with gold in the 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m, and Femke Bol with gold in the mixed 4x400m, silver in the women’s 4x400m and bronze in the 400m hurdles.
Three world records were set, by Mondo Duplantis in the pole vault, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in the 400m hurdles and USA in the mixed 4x400m. Three nations made the athletics medal table for the first time in Olympic history, as Julien Alfred won the 100m and got 200m silver for Saint Lucia, Thea LaFond triumphed in the triple jump for Dominica and Arshad Nadeem got gold in the javelin for Pakistan. There was also a first Olympic title in any sport for Botswana following Letsile Tebogo’s 200m win.
It was quite the show. Merci, Paris!
