The Local Organising Committee of World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, organised a Children's Workshop at the Japan National Stadium on Tuesday, 20 August, 2024. During the workshop, under the theme "What We Can Achieve Through the Championships - World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25" around 20 elementary and junior high school students shared their aspirations for next year's event.
Former Olympic athlete Chisato Fukushima was invited as a special guest. She toured the National Stadium field with the children and shared her insights on the World Athletics Championships from the perspective of a top athlete.
“In sports, it’s not only the results that matter, but also the journey and the growth of the athletes. This journey provides great inspiration and emotion, both for the spectators and the athletes themselves. We eagerly look forward to seeing how the performances will unfold in Tokyo after the experience gained at the Paris Olympics.”
The participating children had the rare opportunity to run on the field with Ms. Fukushima and ask her questions, an experience they wouldn’t usually have. Following this, the children engaged in discussions about the event, further deepening their interest in the World Athletics Championships.
One participant remarked, "It always felt like something beyond my reach, as if it had nothing to do with me, but after participating today, I felt much closer to it and realised that I am also involved." We were able to provide an opportunity for the children to feel more connected to the championships.
The feedback gathered from the workshop will be used to guide the ongoing preparations for the event.
