Historic facts

  • Nataliya Dobrynska (UKR) still holds the championship record with 5013 points from 2012, a mark which stood as a world record until 2023 when Nafissatou Thiam (BEL) and Adrianna Sulek-Schubert (POL) both surpassed the record at the European Indoor Championships, also in Istanbul
  • Kate O’Connor (IRL) became Ireland’s first ever world indoor medallist since Derval O’Rourke won 60m hurdles gold in 2006 with pentathlon silver in 2025. This was also the first time an Irish athlete had won a global medal of any description in the combined events
  • Saga Vanninen (FIN) will not defend her title which means Noor Vidts (BEL) remains the only athlete to have won multiple world indoor pentathlon titles

Potential storylines and notes

  • Can Anna Hall (USA) become just the second US winner of this title after DeDee Nathan in 1999?
  • The entry-list features five of the top six from the heptathlon at the World Championships in Tokyo: Anna Hall (USA), Kate O’Connor (IRL), Taliyah Brooks (USA), Sandrina Sprengel (GER) and Sofie Dokter (NED). Joint bronze medallist Katarina Johnson-Thompson (GBR) is the only athlete missing. Note: Taliyah Brooks has pulled out since the final entries were published and has been replaced by Allie Jones
  • The entry-list also features two of the five athletes who have broken the 5000 points-barrier for the pentathlon: Adrianna Sulek-Schubert (POL) 5014 points and Anna Hall (USA) 5004 points
  • Can Sulek-Schubert or Paulina Ligarska challenge for medals on home soil? "I think I need to be brave and not be afraid to say that I want to compete for a medal. I’m setting personal bests at the age of 29, and I feel like an athlete who still has something to achieve," said Ligarska
  • Anastasia Ntragkomirova (GRE) will become the first athlete to represent Greece in either the pentathlon or heptathlon at the World Indoor Championships
  • Abigail Pawlett (GBR) is also a late withdrawal with an Achilles tendon injury
