Historic facts

  • Femke Bol’s (NED) world record of 49.17 from 2024 is the only sub-50 second winning time in World Indoor Championships history
  • The United States is the most successful nation with seven titles but their last gold medal dates back to 2018

Potential storylines and notes

  • Amber Anning (GBR) will not defend her title. Other notable absentees include world leader Ella Onojuvwevwo (NGR) who clocked 50.28 in the heats of the NCAA Championships
  • Olympic bronze medallist Natalia Bukowiecka (POL) is one of the high profile Polish athletes on the team although she is downplaying her chances: "My goal for the World Indoor Championships? The final and a personal best, meaning a Polish record (50.86). I hope that this season I'll finally be able to show my potential, because in training I'm running the fastest indoor race of my life...I haven't won a medal indoors yet; I haven't even been to the final of the European Indoor Championships, so it's hard to call myself a favourite. I have my ambitions, but I don't feel the burden of expectations. Maybe I'll surprise and become a dark horse of the competition?"
  • Natalia Bukowiecka has been named co-captain of the Polish team alongside 60m hurdler Damian Czykier
  • Can Lieke Klaver (NED) follow in the footsteps of Femke Bol and be the second Dutch winner of the title?
  • Can Henriette Jaeger (NOR) make history by becoming Norway’s first ever world indoor champion in a women’s event?  "We have a goal of two medals in this championship," said Norwegian Athletics Federation sports director Erlend Slokvi
  • Three of the top-six athletes on the entry-list are coached by Laurent Meuwly: Lieke Klaver (NED), Lurdes Gloria Manuel (CZE) and Myrte van der Schoot (NED)
  • Blanca Hervas (ESP) is the only athlete to qualify for an individual 400m final who also contested the mixed 4x400m final this morning
