Greek triple jumper Voula Tsiamita lifted a home crowd Saturday, leaping 14.94 meters to win gold at Athens Olympic Stadium for a Group B European Cup track meet and improve the previous season's best she owned by 27cm.

"I knew I could do it ... I'm very happy," Tsiamita said.

Greek athletes also fared well in other women's events at the start of the two-day track meet. Katerina Thanou clocked 11.03 seconds to win the 100m and led Greece to victory in the 4x100 women's relay.

Men's competition was highlighted by Reyes Estevez's win for Spain in the 1500m in 3 minutes, 44.32 seconds.

"This was a strong final, a fast race. It is very important for my country," Estevez said after the race.

Spain also won the 5o00m when Alberto Garcia finished in 13:40.90.

Yugoslavia's Dragutin Topic easily defeated rivals in the high jump, clearing 2.31 meters.
