The rib injury and pain which so effected the 2002 competitive season of the three time World and Olympic Javelin champion Jan Zelezny would seem to be behind the Czech thrower.

Zelezny confirmed after returning to the Czech Republic on 9 March for a short break from his South African training camp in Potchefstroom where he has been since early January, that he is now on course to return to the top in 2003.

"Now I will spend some three weeks at home and at end of March I will travel back to Potchefstroom for another month of preparation. It is the best place for training for me. My preparation really goes well, It feels better than last year. I can train, no pain, no important health difficulties.”

“I must thank the Czech doctors who did the surgery last year on my ribs, they did an excellent job. It is too early to predict anything. I will just see according to my shape. But for sure I want to start competing at the IAAF Super Grand Prix Meeting Golden Spike in Ostrava on June 12.”

“There will be enough possibilities as the Javelin is a Golden League event this year. My main goal remains the Olympic Games 2004 in Athens where I plan to end my long career."

While in South Africa, Zelezny has been training with 2002 world season leader Sergey Makarov of Russia. "He is really in great shape, it will be hard to beat him. It has positive effects for both sides. And I have him under control," the Czech World record holder said with smile.

As usual, Zelezny has also been enjoying his passion for fishing while staying in South Africa.
