Copenhagen 2014 wins European Sport Tourism Awards

The IAAF/AL-Bank World Half Marathon Championships, Copenhagen 2014 won the Sport Tourism Digital Marketing Award at the Shannon Group European Sport Tourism Awards on Thursday (14).

“We are proud and honoured that the IAAF/AL-Bank World Half Marathon Championships 2014 have been awarded the Sport Tourism Digital Marketing Award,” said Jakob Larsen, CEO of the Danish Athletics Federation. “This is a clear message that we, together with Sport Event Denmark and Copenhagen, have been game changers and created an event that brands running and Copenhagen as the City of Runners.

“The legacy of the World Half Marathon Championships is the annual Copenhagen Half Marathon which will be on September 13. We look forward to welcoming many of the participants from last year.”

With the award tonight the IAAF/AL-Bank World Half Marathon Championships 2014 has become the most prizewinning major international sporting event staged in Denmark in 2014. The event has previously also won national prizes for best international sporting event in Denmark and has been awarded with the IAAF ’Athletics for A Better World’ label.

The event had been nominated in no fewer than four categories for the inaugural European Sport Tourism Awards.  The awards aim to recognise and reward innovation and achievement in sport tourism across Europe.

The 2015 awards presentation took place on Thursday 14 May in King Johns Castle, Limerick, Ireland. Frederik Munk, the event manager of Sport Event Denmark, received the award on behalf of the Danish Athletics Federation, Copenhagen and Sport Event Denmark.
