Slovakia's Libor Charfreitag spun the hammer 77.22 meters and qualified for the Olympics at the U.S. collegiate championships on Thursday.

"Finally I pulled out a big throw and qualified for the summer Olympics," said the Southern Methdoist University student, whose mark was a record for his nation.

He borrowed his coach's cellular phone to call his mother at home in Trnava, Slovakia, with the news.

Another European, Joachim Olsen of Denmark, won the men's shot. Olsen, a student at the University of Idaho, had a winning toss of 20.26 meters to defeat South African Janus Robberts, a student at Southern Methodist University who threw 20.19 meters.

On the track, a group of young American women's hurdlers were exceptionally fast in qualifying. Donica Merriman, a student at Ohio State University, equalled the fifth fastest time in the world this year as she clocked 12.84 seconds in her preliminary round. Minutes later Jenny Adams of the University of Houston won the next preliminary in 12.87 seconds to equal the seventh fastest time this season.

Adams also won the long jump on the second day of the four-day meeting at Duke University's Wallace Wade Stadium. She had a best mark of 6.54 meters.

America's top young male hurdler, Terrence Trammell of the University of South Carolina, started slowly and clocked only 13.61 seconds to win his preliminary. He also qualified in the 100 meters with a time of 10.19 seconds.

Countryman Kaaron Conwright of California Poly at San Luis Obispo had the day's fastest time, 10.10 seconds, with favoured Coby Miller of Auburn University second in 10.12 seconds.
