Loroupe and Tanui to head Kenyan marathon team for Seville

NAIROBI 27 May 1999   Kenya Amateur Athletics Association (KAAA) today named a provisional marathon team for the IAAF World Championships which will take place in Seville, Spain, from 20 to 29 August.

The names, released by KAAA General Secretary David Okeyo included twice New York Marathon and twice Rotterdam Marathon winner Tegla Loroupe and Moses Tanui, winner of Boston City Marathon in 1996 and 1998. Okeyo said no trials will be held for Kenya’s marathon team to Seville. "We’ve selected the provisional team based on the performances achieved in past marathons" Okeyo said.

Loroupe, nevertheless, had previously declared that she will be setting her sights on running in the 10,000m in Seville, subject to selectors' choice.

Kenyan provisional marathon team for Seville also include Eric Wainaina and Esther Wanjiru, both based in Japan. Other names on the list are Bruce Lati, Francis Kipketer, Joseph Kahugu, Ali Mutai, Nelson Ndereva, Stephen Munyori, Robert Ngano, Benson Muriuki, Simon Biwott, Paul Kipsambu, Julius Ruto and Moses Rotich for the men's race. Grace Chebet, Lucia Subano, Catherine Ndereba and Ruth Kilunda complete the women's team.

Okeyo said the final team for Seville will be selected shortly before the IAAF World Championships. Those not making the team for Seville will be participate in the seventh All African Games which will take place in Johannesburg from 15 to 19 September.
