's Heerenberg, The Netherlands - Sunday December 4th - Philip Langat of Kenya and Ethiopian Abebech Afework were the overwhelming winners of the 16th edition of the LCM Montferland Run over 15 kilometres on Sunday (4).

Langat scored his second win in The Netherlands in three months after winning the Singelloop in Utrecht in September. The 21-year-old east African covered the hilly but fast course in this village very close to the German border in 42:43 leaving Ethiopian Hailu Mekonnen (42:55) and Kenyan John Mwangangi (43:13) well behind.

sin the women's race Afework, also 21, crossed the finish line in the centre of 's Heerenberg in 49:17 well head of her nearest opponents Edna Kiplagat (Kenya, 49:42) and Dutchwoman Hilda Kibet (49:48).

The race looked to be very interesting with the participations of both the World Marathon champions, Kenyans Abel Kirui (2009 and 2011) and Edna Kiplagat (2011). Kirui could not follow the fast early part of the race and finished a disappointing eighth in 44:08. Kiplagat, hindered by a slight injury finished second.

The men's race got off to a rather fast start as Langat, Mekonnen and Mwangangi passed the five kilometres marker in 14:23. In the second five kilometres Langat was pressing the pace and he lost his opponents, passing the 10Km point in 28:34. The other two were then already more than ten seconds back. Langat went on and covered the final five kilometres in exactly 14 minutes and opened a wide gap.

The women's race had a different scenario. From the beginning Afework, Kiplagat and Kibet were leading. The trio reached the 5Km marker in 16:42, stayed together and passed the 10km in 33:28. On the way back to the finish Afework pressed the pace and broke away leaving her opponents well behind.

There were 1893 finishers in the race: 1467 men and 426 women.
