Gert Thys, second fastest man ever over the marathon, heads the South African team for the World Championships in Seville opening on August 20.

Thys clocked two hours six minutes 33 seconds in Tokyo last February.

Marius Corbett will defend his javelin title despite suffering from hamstring and forearm injuries and 1997 400 metres hurdles silver medallist Llewellyn Herbert is also included despite battling with a thigh strain.

Both of South Africa's leading women distance runners Elana Meyer and Colleen de Reuck were unavailable for selection.

Meyer, the 1992 Olympic 10,000 metres silver medallist, has decided to concentrate on the World Half-Marathon Championships in October while De Reuck is injured.
