London 2012 triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt, the 2012 World Athlete of the Year, has been named the best athlete of 2012 by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS).
In a poll of 450 sports journalists from 100 countries, Bolt was the overwhelming winner, amassing more than a third of all votes to beat US swimmer Michael Phelps and tennis star Novak Djokovic.
At this year’s Olympic Games in London, Bolt became the first athlete in history to win back-to-back titles in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. His winning time of 9.63 in the 100m was an Olympic record and the second-fastest time in history, while his 19.32 in the 200m was a world-leading time. He joined with his Jamaican team-mates to smash the world record in the 4x100m, running 36.84.
The AIPS women’s honour went to US tennis star Serena Williams with 15.8% of the votes, narrowly finishing ahead of Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis (13.6%) and Olympic 200m champion Allyson Felix (13.2%).
For the first time, this year’s AIPS voting was held in collaboration with the Eurosport ‘fans choice’ poll, which saw Bolt and Ennis top the voting with 40.9% and 38.2% of the voting respectively.

Lausanne, 29 décembre 2012 - Usain Bolt, le triple champion olympique 2012, a été élu sportif de l'année par l'AIPS (l'Association internationale de la presse sportive).
Usain Bolt a été désigné sportif de l'année 2012 par 450 journalistes de sport issus de 100 pays. Le sprinter jamaïcain, qui a réuni les voix d'un tiers des votants, devance largement le nageur Michael Phelps (USA) et le tennisman Novak Djokovic (SRB).
Aux Jeux olympiques de Londres de cette année, Bolt est devenu le premier athlète de l'histoire à remporter les titres olympiques du 100m, 200m et relais 4x100m lors de deux éditions successives des Jeux. Son temps victorieux de 9"63 en finale du 100m - nouveau record olympique - est le second meilleur chrono jamais couru, tandis que ses 19"32 en finale du 200m sont la meilleure performance de l'année. Il s'est ensuite allié à ses coéquipiers jamaïcains pour pulvériser le record du monde du 4x100m lors de la finale, avec un temps de 36"84.
Chez les femmes, la joueuse de tennis Serena Williams (USA) a emporté le titre décerné par l'AIPS avec 15.8% des votes, juste devant Jessica Ennis (GBR), championne olympique de l'heptathlon (13.6%), et Allyson Felix (USA), championne olympique du 200m (13.2%).
Cette année, pour la première fois, le trophée de l'AIPS a été attribué en collaboration avec le choix des fans d'Eurosport sur Facebook, qui ont désigné Bolt et Ennis avec respectivement 40,9% et 38,2% des suffrages.
