Maria Laghrissi of Morocco won the 4th edition of the Women's Race to Victory, held Sunday (24) in Rabat under the patronage of HM King Mohammed VI and the presidency of HRH Princess Lalla Amina, President of the Moroccan Special Olympics and member of the Advisory Board of Special Olympics International on the theme "Run for Citizenship."

The second and third places in this 8km race, initiated by the association "Women's Achievements and Values" and chaired by the two-time world 400m hurdles champion Nezha Bidouane, went to Fatiha Benchatki and Zahra El Gourch.

Thousands of women and girls have responded readily to Bidouane's invitation to take part in this race in a festive atmosphere in the pouring rain in one of the first gatherings of its kind in Morocco and the Arab-Muslim world.

One of the highlights was the start of the race for athletes competing in the Special Olympics Morocco division, whose participation was massive this year.

According to Bidouane, the drop in the number of participants this year, compared to the first three editions including last year's which saw a record 22,000 participants, was due mainly to the poor weather conditions in Rabat over the previous three days.

Bidouane, the bronze medallist at the Sydney Olympics, said that this edition achieved the expected goals both at the organisational level and in the quality of the participants, stressing that this event's purpose is to educate women about the importance of sport as a means of social integration and vocational training, to encourage them to join the national sports movement and to contribute to the promotion of women's sports.

"The success in this edition encourages us to step up our efforts to give this race a greater dimension," Bidouane said.
