$100,000 IAAF World Record Programme supported by TDK and Toyota – Berlin 2009

Ever since the IAAF was founded almost a century ago, the sport of Athletics has combined the exciting drama of head to head competition with the challenge of setting new limits, of stretching the limits of human performance. Every athlete’s dream, regardless of his or her event, is to break a World record, with the ultimate desire for most being to achieve such a feat at the World Championships.

The IAAF World Championships in Athletics are the third biggest global sporting event after the Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup, and the 12th edition in Berlin, Germany from 15 to 23 August 2009 will be the largest sports gathering on the planet in 2009.

Reflecting the importance of the championships and any athlete making such achievement the IAAF with the support of two of its partners, TDK (for the men’s events) and Toyota (for the women’s events) will ensure that any athlete breaking a World record at the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Berlin, Germany (15-23 August) can claim a $100,000 cash bonus, pending ratification of the result.

“I am very pleased that, with the support of TDK and Toyota, the IAAF can use the World Record Programme to promote and celebrate the amazing achievement of any athlete who breaks a World Record in Berlin,” said IAAF President Lamine Diack.
