Athletics took centre stage at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games opening ceremony as marathon runner Vanderlei de Lima lit the flame in the cannonball-shaped cauldron – a small and low-emission model befitting the environmental theme of the Games – on Friday (5).
In exactly 300 days from today (17), the athletics programme of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will get underway and the eyes of the world will be on the Brazilian city.
Vanderlei de Lima, who went on to win a bronze medal in the Olympic Games Marathon despite being attacked by a spectator when he led the race, has been voted Brazil's sportsman of the year.
