European marathon record-holder Sondre Nordstad Moen made a sensational breakthrough in late 2017. Not since 1996 has a European athlete won the men’s title at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, but after Norway’s Sondre Nordstad Moen’s massive breakthrough in 2017, perhaps that could be about to change.

After breaking away from pre-race favourite Bedan Karoki at 36 kilometres, Norway’s Sondre Nordstad Moen went on to win the Fukuoka Marathon on Sunday (3), clocking a European record of 2:05:48 at the IAAF Gold Label road race.

Running in relatively warm conditions, Kenya's Allan Kiprono and Fate Tola of Germany produced convincing victories at the HAJ Hannover Marathon, an IAAF Silver Label Road Race, on Sunday (9).
