Noah Lyles earned the first of what will surely be a sequence of global sprint crowns here tonight as he won the world 200m title with efficiency rather than flamboyance in a time of 19.83.
The naturally exuberant 22-year-old had already indicated his talent by winning the last three IAAF Diamond League titles over this distance, and by clocking 19.50 earlier this season, putting him fourth on the all-time list behind world record holder Usain Bolt, on 19.19, Bolt&rsquo;s Jamaican compatriot Yohan Blake, on 19.26, and fellow countryman Michael Johnson, on 19.32.
Behind Lyles, Canada&rsquo;s Rio 2016 silver medallist Andre De Grasse confirmed his return from longstanding hamstring injury problems by taking another silver in 19.95, ahead of the hugely consistent Alex Quinonez, who became Ecuador&rsquo;s second world medallist following the race walking triumphs of Jefferson Perez.
In the end, Lyles&rsquo; decision to concentrate on the longer sprint rather than doubling at the 100m &ndash; in which he became Diamond League champion at the end of August - paid off.
&ldquo;So many times this year I&rsquo;ve thought of being world champion, you wouldn&rsquo;t believe it,&rdquo; said Lyles.
&ldquo;I have on my phone, I say it to myself in my car, I think it all the time &ndash; and finally to have done it feels unbelievable.
&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know how many people come to their first World Championships and get the gold, but I&rsquo;ve done it. I just knew that no matter what position I found myself in I can always find a way to come through. And when I crossed the line I just felt relief.
&ldquo;Don&rsquo;t say I&rsquo;m the new Bolt. I&rsquo;m me. If you like me I&rsquo;ll happily entertain you. It&rsquo;s my time.&rdquo;
With world gold safely in his grasp, the emotional significance became evident as he sank into the arms of his mother Keisha, who at one point carefully removed her glasses to dab at her eyes with a Stars and Stripes flag that matched the one around her son&rsquo;s shoulders.
While Lyles began his celebrations, Adam Gemili, who won gold at the 2017 World Championships in London as part of Britain&rsquo;s 4x100m, sank down near the hoardings, clutching a bottle of water and the remnants of his ambition after finishing fourth having headed the field into the finishing straight.
For a few heady moments it looked as if this most amiable of athletes, European 200m champion in 2014, was about to earn a first individual global medal, perhaps even, incredibly&hellip;.but no.
Lyles, maintaining his form with steely concentration, was the first to come past him, and as the line loomed the Briton, who had run a season&rsquo;s best of 20.03 in the semi-final, began to tie up.
Ten yards from the line, De Grasse, to his left, and Quinonez, to his right, glided past him and he crossed. Another near miss for Gemili, who clocked exactly the same time as he had in the semi-final.
One place behind him came Turkey&rsquo;s defending champion, Ramil Guliyev, whose fitful form here had only earned him a place in lane nine, from where he ran 20.07.
&ldquo;I lost all my balance at the end,&rdquo; Gemili reflected. &ldquo;I had nothing left. I came so close and I just let it go. I&rsquo;m so sorry. I feel I&rsquo;ve let so many people down. The last two years I have been plagued with injury and to get back to where I should be has been so hard. Then not to break 20 seconds today was so disappointing.&rdquo;

Rafith Rodriguez and Rosibel Garcia provided the highlights for a strong Colombian team that dominated the athletics events of the 17th Bolivarian Games (Juegos Bolivarianos) that took place in the Peruvian city of Trujillo, and ended after five days of competition on Saturday (30).Rodriguez, 24, won an impressive 400m and 800m double in the Estadio Chan Chan, equaling the national record at the shorter distance with 45.62 and then setting a Games record over two laps of the track with 1:45.14. “I’m very pleased with my victories in Peru, especially with the great time posted in the 400m. Training has been going very well in the last part of the year. I was able to recover from the disappointment at the World Championships and now I’m ready to focus on next season,” commented Rodriguez, who had been ill at the IAAF World Championships in August and unable to display his best form in Moscow.“I’ll be training in the US and the goal will be to compete at the IAAF Continental Cup and to deliver a good performance at 800m, which is my main event,” he added.Garcia also doubled, but at 800m and 1500m. The 32-year-old from Cali took the victory over 800m in 2:01.98 and set a national and Games record at 1500m with 4:09.75, edging out her compatriot Muriel Coneo, who was second in 4:09.79. “The idea was to force the pace along with Muriel, because the Panamanian girl (Andrea Ferris) is very strong. We showed great teamwork and we delivered quality performances," said Garcia, who held the previous Colombian record at 4:15.38 from the 2013 World Championships. "Training is going very well and we know we could have run even faster."Another Colombian to post an outstanding performance was Mauricio Ortega. The 19-year-old from Antioquia, who was fourth at the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships and ninth at the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships, set a South American junior record by almost two metres in the Discus with 59.67m. Ortega improved the 19-year-old mark with the 2kg implement of 57.80m, set by Argentina’s Julio Pinero at the 1994 IAAF World Junior Championships where the latter got a silver medal. His distance was also a Colombian senior national record.He leads the World junior lists with his performance and had previously captured the Area junior record with the 1.75kg Discus at the South American Junior Championships in Resistencia, Argentina, with 62.78m on 19 October.Venezuelan athletes post plenty of positive performances Among the Venezuelan victories were wins by Jose Gregorio Pena in the 3000m Steeplechase, pole vaulter and World youth champion Robeilys Peinado and hammer thrower Rosa Rodriguez.Pena, who shone this season with a national record of 8:20.87 at the IAAF World Challenge meeting in Berlin, won over the barriers in a Games record of 8:26.6, decimating the ancient mark of 8:48.7 set by Colombia’s Víctor Manuel Mora at the 1973 edition of the Games in Panama City. Peinado won with 4.30m while Rodriguez, the 2012 Ibero-American champion and 2013 South American champion, also set a Games record with 73.36m.Sprinters Alex Quinonez and Angela Tenorio provided Ecuador’s best performances. Quinonez won the 100m and 200m double with 10.52 and 20.47, the latter with a 0.0m/s wind was a Games record. The 17-year-old Tenorio, a double medallist in the sprints at the 2013 IAAF World Youth Championships, grabbed the 100m title with a 11.47 clocking into a -1.0m/s breeze.Erick Barrondo, Guatemala’s London 2012 Olympic Games silver medalist, won the 20km Race Walk with a time of 1:23:25, beating Colombia’s Jose Leonardo Montana by 18 seconds.Ines Melchor provided the best performances for the host nation by winning the 5000m and 10,000m long distance double. The previous best mark belonged to Qatar’s Ashraf Amgad El Seify with 85.26m from July 2011 in Rhede, Germany. All of Gomez’s valid throws were well over 82 metres: 82.54m, 82.64m, 85.38m, foul, 85.03m, foul.The World youth best performance will be partial compensation for Gomez’s disaster at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, this summer.Gomez posted three fouls in the qualifying round and did not made it to the final in spite of being arguably the pre-competition favorite. His previous best mark, which was the former South American youth best record, was 83.00m from 11 November in Mendoza. Ecuador’s Alex Quinonez and Brazilian Ana Claudia Lemos Silva shone at the second day (6 July) of the 2013 South American Championships, which are taking place in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, at the “Campo Elias Gutierrez” stadium.After grabbing the 100m titles on 5 July, both Quinonez and Lemos Silva won the 200m finals by big margins.The 23-year-old Quinonez, a finalist at the 2012 Olympic Games at 200m, triumphed in 20.44 (1.8m/s), beating Colombian Bernardo Baloyes and Brazilian Jorge Henrique Vides, both timed at 20.71. The 19-year-old Baloyes cramped up in the final stages of the race. Quinonez equalled the championship record set by Brazilian Robson Caetano da Silva in 1989.Both victories by Quinonez are historical for Ecuadorian athletics, as no athlete from that country had ever won a sprinting event at the South American Championships. And after reaching the Olympic final and showing great form in 2013, Quinonez might be seen as a candidate to reach a major final again, in this case at the Moscow World Championships.Lemos Silva’s winning time was a wind-assisted 22.70 (3.4m/s). Venezuelan Nercely Soto (23.05) and Ecuadorian Erika Chavez (23.10) completed the podium.The 24-year-old from the State of Ceara felt tired at the end of the race. “I haven’t reduced my training loads for this event. The goal is to be in the final in Moscow,” said Lemos Silva, who has had a wonderful season so far, highlighted by her 11.05 South American 100m record set in Belem at the Brazilian Grand Prix on 12 May.Later in Saturday’s session, Lemos Silva ran the second leg of Brazil’s 4x100m relay which captured the victory in 43.37 – alongside Evelyn dos Santos, Franciela Krasucki and Jailma de Lima.Other notable moments from day two came from the infield. Brazilian Geisa Arcanjo, a Shot Put finalist at the London Olympics, won her event with 18.27m in round five, setting a season’s best.In the Javelin, Colombian Flor Denis Ruiz set a championship record with her round-three throw of 60.23m, achieving the qualification standard for the World Championships.In the morning session Brazilian Wagner Domingos took victory in the Hammer with a season’s best of 71.36m. Domingos brought the event’s title to Brazil for the first time in 30 years, breaking the series of nine consecutive titles by Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Cerra, the South American record-holder and the most decorated athlete in the history of these championships. The 36-year-old Cerra was second in Cartagena with a season’s best of 69.33m.In the women’s Long Jump Macarena Reyes became the fifth Chilean, and the first since 1971, to win the South American title. The 29-year-old jumped 6.54m on her final attempt to displace the Brazilian duo of Keila Costa and Jessica dos Reis from the top of the podium, both jumping 6.49m.Winners of the rest of the men’s events from day two were Brazil’s Mahau Suguimati in the 400m Hurdles (49.86), Brazil’s Talles Silva in the High Jump (2.22m), Argentina’s Roman Gastaldi in the Decathlon (7273), Brazil in the men’s 4x100m (39.47), and Brazil’s Caio Bonfim in the 20,000m Race Walk (1:24:28.4).The other women’s winners were all Brazilian: Cruz da Silva in the 10,000m (34:44.14), Liliana Fernandez in the 400m Hurdles (58.03), Karla da Silva in the Pole Vault (4.20m), and Tamara de Souza in the Heptathlon (5685).The event will conclude on 7 July.Eduardo Biscayart for the IAAF
