Last weekend Kavarna, Bulgaria, next stop Copenhagen, Denmark for the 2014 edition of the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. And for the first time ever the World Half Marathon Championships will be transformed into a gigantic running festival for both elite runners and recreational runners. It will be fast, flat and scenic through the heart of Copenhagen.
As Kavarna passed on the baton to Copenhagen at last weekend’s IAAF World Half Marathon Championships – the Danes were already up and running. In 2014 the World Championships will be staged in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.
Kipketer inspired to run again
"I have started running in Copenhagen and I really appreciate it," said Wilson Kipketer, IAAF Ambassador and former World record holder and World champion at 800m. "You see people running everywhere. Old people, young people – everybody runs in Copenhagen and Denmark."
A massive and epic running festival is in the pipeline for the elite runners as a gigantic mass participation run with 25,000 participants will form a show room for running and set the scene for the elite. Registration for the mass participation race will open in November.
"Copenhagen is a scenic city that is clean, compact and safe and that regularly converts its city centre into spectacular arenas of sport events surrounded by historical and royal monuments," says Jakob Larsen, CEO, Danish Athletic Federation. "The Municipality of Copenhagen and Wonderful Copenhagen, further supported by Sport Event Denmark, have hosted a multitude of international sport events, including the IOC Session and Olympic Congress and the UCI Road World Championships 2011."
