<p>World champion Beatrice Chebet ended her year on a high by running 14:13* to smash the women&rsquo;s world 5km record at the Cursa dels Nassos, a <strong>World Athletics Label</strong> road race, in Barcelona on Sunday (31).</p>
<p>The Kenyan 23-year-old improved on the previous women-only world record of 14:29 set by Ethiopia&rsquo;s Senbere Teferi in Herzogenaurach on 12 September 2021, while her performance is also faster than the women&rsquo;s world record set in a mixed race of 14:19, achieved by Ethiopia&rsquo;s Ejegayehu Taye at the 2021 Cursa dels Nassos.</p>
<p>Taye finished second behind Chebet on this occasion, clocking 14:21, while Kenya&rsquo;s Lilian Kasait Rengeruk was third in 14:26 as the top three &ndash; all 5km medallists at the World Athletics Road Running Championships Riga 23 in October &ndash; dipped under the previous women-only world record mark. Uganda's Joy Cheptoyek was also inside that mark, finishing fourth in 14:28.</p>
<p>Ethiopia&rsquo;s 18-year-old Medina Eisa was fifth in 14:40 &ndash; the fastest ever women&rsquo;s 5km&nbsp;by an U20 athlete.</p>
<p>The men's race was won by Switzerland&rsquo;s Dominic Lobalu who clocked&nbsp;13:12, six seconds clear of runner-up&nbsp;Mathew Kipkoech Kipruto of Kenya.</p>
<p>Held under ideal weather conditions (15&ordm;C and a very slight wind), the women's event was paced by Kassie Wubrist Aschal, another 18-year-old Ethiopian athlete who recently set a 14:41 PB in Lille. She was closely followed by the quintet of Chebet, Taye, Rengeruk, Eisa and Cheptoyek.</p>
<p>The opening kilometre was a swift and promising 2:49, well on schedule to challenge the world record. That pace continued over the second kilometre as the group went through the 2km mark in 5:38, but Wubrist left her pacing duties just 100m later.</p>
<p>While Eisa began to lose ground before half way, the rhythm at the helm in the absence of the pacemaker dropped dangerously as Chebet, Rengeruk and Taye reached the 3km point in 8:38 for a 3:00 split, while Cheptoyek ran a couple of seconds behind the Riga medallists. Over the penultimate kilometre, Taye moved to the front to share the lead with Chebet &ndash; who&nbsp;won world cross country gold in Bathurst and world 5000m bronze in Budapest prior&nbsp;to her world 5km title in Riga &ndash;&nbsp;as they both took turns in their attempt to hit record pace.</p>
<p>The trio clocked 11:36 as they hit the 4km mark after another relatively slow 2:58 split but Rengeruk could not maintain that speed and the race became a thrilling battle between Chebet and Taye.</p>
<p>Yet that clash was short-lived as after negotiating a narrow bend some 500m from the finish, Chebet found another gear. She picked up the pace and opened a sizeable gap on Taye in a matter of a few metres. The clock read 12:51 with 500m remaining, which suggested a world record was more than feasible for Chebet &ndash; holder of a 14:05.92 lifetime best on the track, set when securing world bronze in Budapest.</p>
<p>Chebet's closing metres were terrific, as she extended her advantage on world record-holder Taye to finally reach the finish line unopposed in 14:13. Taye was second in 14:21, the world 10,000m bronze medallist wearing the bib number one courtesy of her previous wins in Barcelona in 2021 and 2022.</p>
<p>Rengeruk completed the podium in a lifetime best of 14:26, finishing ahead of Cheptoyek whose 14:28 bettered the Ugandan record of 14:50 she set in Riga where she placed sixth.</p>
<p>The youngest Ethiopians, Eisa and the pacemaker Wubrist who continued on to finish the race, came fifth and sixth in 14:50 and 15:04, respectively.</p>
<p>Britain's Katie Snowden was seventh on her 5km debut in 15:23, while Spain's Esther Guerrero ran 15:45 in eighth.</p>
<p>"I came to Barcelona determined to better the world record as I felt capable of that," said&nbsp;Chebet. "This world record means a lot for me, I can't believe it."</p>
<p>The men's event held earlier was won by Lobalu in 13:12 ahead of Kipruto (13:18) and Spain's Abdessamad Oukhelfen (13:27).</p>
<p>Lobalu's performance equals the European record set by Jimmy Gressier of France in Monaco in March.</p>

<h2>Sawe breaks course record in Bolzano</h2>
<p>Kenya&rsquo;s <span lang="EN-US">Sabastian Sawe clocked </span>28:00 to break the 32-year-old men's course record by two seconds at the BOclassic, a <strong>World Athletics Label</strong> road race, in Bolzano, Italy, on Sunday (31).</p>
<p>Racing over 10km, the world half marathon champion won by three seconds ahead of Italy&rsquo;s Yemaneberhan Crippa.</p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">In the women&rsquo;s race, Nadia Battocletti became the first Italian to win</span>&nbsp;<span lang="EN-US">since 1988, clocking </span>15:30.</p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">The men's race took place over eight laps of the 1.25km course through the centre of Bolzano and a group of seven was still together after the first loop. The lead pack whittled down over the next few laps before the race became a duel between Sawe and Crippa.</span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">Sawe launched his first attack with three laps to go and increased his</span> <span lang="EN-US">lead on the penultimate loop. Crippa was still in close contact but he couldn&rsquo;t respond when Sawe moved away on the final loop and went on to win in 28:00.</span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">Crippa reached the finish line in a PB of 28:03, while South Africa&rsquo;s Maxime Chaumeton matched his position from last year and placed third in 28:39.</span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">In the women&rsquo;s race Battocletti, the European cross country runner-up, kept her two strongest rivals &ndash; Kenya&rsquo;s Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi and Nelly Chepchirchir &ndash; at bay after the four 1.25km loops.</span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">The leading trio stayed together for three laps before Kipkemboi broke away. But on the long finishing straight in Bahnhofsallee, Battocletti finally ignited the turbo and sprinted to a win in 15:30, three seconds ahead of Chepchirchir.</span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">Two-time BOclassic winner Kipkemboi was third in </span><span lang="DE">15:49.</span></p>

Chebet breaks world 5km record with 14:13 in Barcelona

<p>For as long as he can remember, Jemal Yimer has been a student of the sport.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The 27-year-old grew up in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, without any running background in his family, but that didn&rsquo;t stop him idolising the greats. &ldquo;Haile Gebrselassie,&rdquo; he says quickly, when asked about his childhood heroes.</p>
<p>Yimer began running at school, juggling football and athletics in his teenage years before deciding to give the latter his full focus. Since 2016, it has consumed him and when he&rsquo;s not running twice a day &ndash; which he does every day except Sunday &ndash; one of his hobbies is to watch documentaries about the greats of the sport.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;Sometimes it&rsquo;s (Eliud) Kipchoge, Gebrselassie, or Kenenisa (Bekele) &ndash; we see the life history of strong athletes, their races,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;That is the backbone of me; it&rsquo;s motivation for me.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Yimer earned his first international vest in 2016, finishing fourth at the African Championships over 10,000m. The following year he hit a new level, finishing fourth at the World Cross Country Championships in Uganda, helping Ethiopia to team gold, and he went on to finish fifth in the 10,000m at the 2017 World Championships in London, clocking 26:56.11.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2018, there was another near-miss at a major podium, Yimer finishing fourth at the World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia, just one second behind the bronze medallist. Later that year, he returned to Valencia and performed like a man possessed, winning in a then Ethiopian half marathon record of 58:33.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As his focus turned from the track to the roads, he also changed coaches, coming under the guidance of Getamesay Molla, who works with a number of Ethiopia&rsquo;s best marathoners. Molla had been a good athlete himself, if not quite a champion, and he&rsquo;d trained alongside many of the country&rsquo;s best, such as Kenenisa Bekele, before turning his hand to coaching in 2010.&nbsp;</p>
<p>He began working with Yimer in 2019 and has long been impressed by his protege. &ldquo;Jemal is a very strong athlete, and he&rsquo;s versatile,&rdquo; says Molla. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s tough, especially for races. He&rsquo;s confident in himself.&rdquo;</p>
<p>They train at various venues on the outskirts of Addis Ababa, doing long runs at high altitude and dropping to medium altitude for faster interval sessions. Yimer typically runs about 200km per week. What impresses the coach most about Yimer?</p>
<p>&ldquo;His consistency,&rdquo; says Molla. &ldquo;Every session, he does not miss.&rdquo;</p>
<p>In 2020, Yimer made his long-awaited marathon debut. It was due to come at the Boston Marathon in April but after that race was cancelled due to the pandemic, it ended up being at the Valencia Marathon in December, but Yimer was unable to finish, having suffered an early fall.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In 2021, Boston was back on the calendar and Yimer turned in a superb debut performance there, finishing third in 2:10:38, just one second behind Lemi Berhanu in second. &ldquo;My expectation for him was winning,&rdquo; says Molla with a smile. &ldquo;But the podium was not bad; it was good.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The transition to the marathon was &ldquo;not difficult&rdquo;, says Yimer, but given his stride was better suited to shorter distances, he &ldquo;had challenges after 15km, 20km&rdquo; on hard long runs. In 2022, Yimer returned to Boston and finished eighth in 2:08:58, and earlier this year he claimed victory at the Los Angeles Marathon in 2:13:13. In August he finished second at the Antrim Coast Half Marathon in Northern Ireland in 58:38, teeing him up beautifully for a podium tilt at the&nbsp;<strong>World Athletics Road Running Championships Riga 23</strong>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The journey to Latvia proved an eventful one, with the Ethiopian team stranded in Germany for close to a full day just two days before the race. Still, Yimer wasn&rsquo;t going to use that as an excuse.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;This was not the first time for such a long journey; travelling is always up and down and that is not a reason for how I will perform in the race,&rdquo; he said on the eve of the championships. &ldquo;I will focus totally.&rdquo;</p>
<p>That&rsquo;s exactly what he did, with Yimer launching himself into contention at the key moment of the half marathon, when Kenya&rsquo;s Daniel Simiu Ebenyo surged to the front after 16km. Yimer was the only man to go with him, but he soon found the pace too hot to handle.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ebenyo also began to falter in the final kilometre, giving way to his teammate Sabastian Kimaru Sawe, but Yimer paid an even heavier price, dropping back to fourth. Try as he might, he was unable to summon the finish needed to overhaul Samwel Nyamai Mailu for the bronze medal, coming home fourth in 59:22.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was a sign of how hard he&rsquo;d run that Yimer had to be assisted through the mixed zone by a medic afterwards, his very best coming up just shy of a medal on the day. Still, he has a chance to make amends soon. On 5 November, Yimer will line up at the New York City Marathon against a top-class field. His PB of 2:08:58 ranks him 13th, though his rivals know that&rsquo;s not a true reflection of his ability.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;We can expect a good result in New York,&rdquo; says Molla. &ldquo;I expect he&rsquo;ll be on the podium.&rdquo;</p>
<p>A father to a two-year-old boy, Yimer will sometimes bring his son along to training and the toddler is starting to get a grasp on what his dad does for a living. Yimer knows a race like New York offers a golden opportunity to provide a better future for his family, which is part of his motivation.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;First I focus on training, then I have many plans on the business end for the future,&rdquo; he says. Yimer isn&rsquo;t shy about making them public: &ldquo;My goal is to run fast times, to run all the major marathons, and to win world and Olympic medals.&rdquo;</p>

Always learning, Yimer refocuses after Riga with marathon success in his sights

<p>The World Athletics Council has today (14) confirmed the host cities for three future World Athletics Series events at its meeting in Budapest, ahead of the World Athletics Championships starting on Saturday (19) in the Hungarian capital.</p>
<p>At the 231st Council meeting, the World Athletics Road Running Championships has been awarded to San Diego, USA, for 2025 and to Copenhagen, Denmark, for 2026.</p>
<p>The 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships will be held in Eugene, Oregon. The Council has also reinstated Lima, Peru, as the host of the World U20 Championships in 2024.</p>
<p>World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said: &ldquo;We are grateful that so many great cities around the world are interested in hosting our events and we&rsquo;re delighted with the quality of the candidates we have had to choose from to host these World Athletics Series events over the next three years. The standard of bids is so high that we would like to encourage those who were not successful today to continue talking to us about staging future events.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The inaugural World Athletics Road Running Championships, which will include championship distances of one mile, 5km and half marathon, will be held in Riga, Latvia, on 1 October this year. This championships will become an annual event from 2025 and is proving to be a popular property for prospective host cities.</p>
<p>In a competitive process, San Diego and Copenhagen were selected to host the second and third editions of the championships.</p>
<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m proud San Diego is the first US city to have the opportunity to host the World Athletics Road Running Championships &ndash; another success that showcases our city as a premier global destination for sports tourism,&rdquo; said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. "My thanks goes out to the team at Sports San Diego and our local running community for all they did to bring this major event to our city, and I&rsquo;m excited to welcome runners from around the world for a memorable weekend.&rdquo;</p>
<p>USATF CEO Max Siegel said: "We extend our congratulations to San Diego for being awarded the 2025 World Road Running Championships. This event will showcase the beauty of the city and the spirit of the athletes who will grace its roads. <p>Copenhagen returns as a host city after successfully staging the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships in 2014.</p>
<p>&ldquo;With a strong city brand, a leading position in the green transition, and extensive expertise in utilising urban spaces for hosting events, Copenhagen stands as one of the foremost event cities worldwide. And now we are very excited to welcome athletes and their friends and families to the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen in 2026,&rdquo; says Mikkel Aaro-Hansen, CEO at Wonderful Copenhagen.</p>
<p>Danish Athletics Federation President Simone Frandsen added: &ldquo;We are both thrilled and honoured to be chosen to host the World Road Running Championships. Following our successful introduction of recreational runners in the World Half Marathon Championships 2014 and the acclaimed World Cross Country Championships 2019, we once again pledge our dedication to design a spectacular experience. We couldn't be more excited to stage the WRRC 2026 as we continue to contribute moving the sport forward.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>World U20 Championships</h2>
<p>The World Athletics Council has reinstated Lima as the host city of the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships.</p>
<p>The Peruvian Athletics Federation informed World Athletics in April this year that political instability and social unrest at that time, as well as natural disasters in Peru, had left the federation and the local organising committee (LOC) unable to stage the event next year.</p>
<p>However, the situation has stabilised in Lima and with strong backing from the Peruvian Government, the Peruvian Federation has confirmed that it is now able to host the event from 26-31 August 2024 as previously scheduled.</p>
<p>Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, will host the World Athletics U20 Championships for the second time in 2026, having first played host in 2014 and also welcomed athletes for the World Athletics Championships in 2022.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Hayward Magic inspires amazing performances on the track, generates meaningful collaborations in our research facilities and classrooms, and energises fans, alumni and friends the world over,&rdquo; said University of Oregon President Karl Scholz. &ldquo;We look forward to welcoming young athletes from around the globe to the University of Oregon.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Tracktown USA CEO Michael Reilly added: &ldquo;TrackTown USA is ecstatic to once again partner with USATF and the University of Oregon in welcoming the global track and field family to our Eugene and Springfield communities. Hayward Field will serve as the perfect theatre for showcasing the sport's emerging talent. This event will continue building the legacy from WCH Oregon22, and further our ongoing commitment to serving the world's best athletes."</p>
<p>Among other decisions, the Council approved the dates for the World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 25, which will be held on 10-11 May 2025.</p>
