USA’s Le'Ezra Brown equalled the world U20 110m hurdles record* and Italy improved the world U20 mixed 4x100m record* on the penultimate day of the World Athletics U20 Championships Oregon 26 on Saturday (8).
Brown stormed to his world 110m hurdles title in 12.72, matching the world U20 record set by France’s Sasha Zhoya when he won the world U20 title in Nairobi in 2021.
The performance followed Brown’s North American U20 record of 12.89 in the heats and his wind-aided 12.82 in the semifinals. It saw him get gold ahead of Japan’s Jeremy Koga (12.97) and USA’s Zacchaeus Brocks, who equalled his PB of 12.98.
A series of national records followed – a Norwegian U20 record for Anthony Johnsen (13.00), a Bahamian U20 record for Jahcario Wilson (13.08), an area U20 record for Brazil’s Odair Goncalves (13.15) and a Turkish U20 record for Koray Uygun (13.20).
It was the second world U20 record of the evening as it came after Italy clocked 41.21 in the mixed 4x100m – the third world U20 mixed 4x100m record of the competition in Oregon.
Edwin Fermin Galvan, Elisa Valensin, Francesco Pagliarini and Kelly Doualla teamed up to improve on the world U20 record of 41.60 set by Great Britain & NI in the second heat on Thursday. That had beaten the world U20 record of 41.64 set by Australia in the first heat, as the event made its debut at the World U20 Championships.
Great Britain also dipped under their previous world record mark in the final, running 41.38 to secure silver, while USA were just one hundredth of a second back, getting bronze in 41.39.
Nigeria were fourth (41.77), Jamaica fifth (41.92), Germany sixth (42.03) and Poland seventh (42.17) as Australia and France were unable to get the baton around.
