Girls 100m Hurdles Final

Having watched her younger sister Ashton place fifth in the Girls’ 200m final just 30 minutes earlier, Julian Purvis sped to gold in the 100m Hurdles to become the second successive US winner at the World Youth Championships.

After a fair start, it was the athletes in the middle lanes who were in front – Purvis, Shermaine Williams, Anna Zagre and Christabel Nettey were stride-for-stride in the first half of the race.

But Canada’s Nettey hit hurdle six to fall behind, leaving the other three to fight for the medals. Purvis edged ahead of Jamaica’s Williams over the final few barriers to win in 13.41.

It was a PB for Purvis, although she has run 13.32 over the senior height hurdles.

Belgium’s Zagre also set a PB to win the bronze medal in 13.58. Croatia’s Ivana Loncarek was fifth, Jacinta Doyle of Australia was sixth and Belgium’s Lucie Cincinatis was seventh. Nettey recovered well from her stumble to finish the race in 14.42.
