Arantxa King took Bermuda’s first gold medal in the history of these championships, taking advantage of a perfect following wind of 2m/s in the third round to set a lifetime best of 6.39m.

France’s Eloyse Lesueur took silver with 6.28m and Romania’s Cornelia Deiac claimed bronze with a personal best 6.25m.

Estonia’s Kaire Leibak, the best jumper in the field on the world rankings list and the silver medallist in the triple jump on Thursday, was a disappointing seventh with 6.11m.

King, 15, ranked outside the world top 20 before the competition, but started promisingly with 6.07m and 6.09 in the opening two rounds.

In round three, she added 25 centimetres to her personal best with what would ultimately be the winning mark and she proved this was no fluke with 6.25m in the next round.
