China’s Li Zhang won by half a metre with 56.66m in a contest in which she and silver medallist Vira Rebryk, of Ukraine, were a class apart.

Zhang had five throws over 54 metres and could afford to sit out the third round as only Rebryk offered a challenge. Cuba’s Yanet Cruz was well down in third with 51.66m.

Zhang set out her stall from round one, throwing 54.82m and improved her lead in round two to 56.66m. Rebryk came close in the fourth round with 55.96m and again gave Zhang butterflies in the final round when she threw 56.16m.

It was not quite enough and Zhang celebrated victory with the final throw of the competition, which was measured at 56.60m.
