Kenya’s Janeth Chepngetich looks to be the class of the field and is four seconds faster than her nearest competitors on paper, so there is every chance she can bring the world youth title back to Kenya for the fifth time in the event’s history.

She ran a personal best of 4:13.8 in winning the national youth trials in Nairobi on 1 April, and coming as she does from the Rift Valley, Chepngetich is unlikely to be troubled by the 1000m of altitude she will encounter in Cali.

There are several athletes in the field, however, who will hope to provide an upset.

Among them is Beatha Nishimwe, who has a best of 4:17.37 and who will be looking to get Rwanda their first medal in the 16-year history of these championships.

Others worthy of medal consideration include Uganda’s Janat Chemusto, who has a best of 4:17.61, Bahrain’s Dalila Abdulkadir Gosa, Japan’s Wakana Kabasawa and Great Britain’s Harriet Knowles-Jones.
