Italy’s Stefano Sottile looks the pick of the entrants in what could prove a wide open competition.

Sottile soared clear at a world-youth-leading height of 2.20m in Torino in May and backed it up with 2.17m in Bressanone two weeks later to indicate his medal potential.

Ukraine’s powerful double-pronged challenge is led by 15-year-old Dmytro Nikitin (2.18m) and backed up by Roman Kuzminov (2.15m).

Meanwhile, Jaron Brooks (2.17m) of the USA is another to be respected.

China is the most successful nation in the history of this event at the IAAF World Youth Championships and Shuo Ding (2.15m) leads their challenge in Cali.

Other athletes who could threaten are Jamaica’s Lusahane Wilson and Jermaine Francis of St Kitts & Nevis, who have both cleared 2.15m this year.
