The final day at the 5th IAAF World Youth Championships opened with a blast as 17-year-old William Wynne smashed the World Youth all time best by a massive 85 hundredths of a second.

In a race which on paper promised to be closely fought, Wynne had no rivals finishing more than 10 metres ahead of runner up US team-mate Reginald Wyatt in a World Youth best 49.01.

The two Americans started strongly and as they entered the final bend they shared the lead well clear of the South African duo of PC Beneke and Cornel Fredericks who came into these championships as the two fastest runners of the year.

A very determined Wynne who also won silver in the 110m Hurdles here in Ostrava toughened the pace and had metres to spare as he entered the final straight.

After setting the year’s fastest time in the semi-finals (50.28), it was Wynne’s declared ambition to break Marnus Kritzinger’s World Youth best of 49.86 set back in 1999. Not only did Wynne break it but he smashed it.

Wynne who is coached by former World record holder Kim Batten in Athens, Georgia is now the third athlete to have set a World Youth best in these championships.

Wyatt held off the late challenge of Amaurys Valle to claim silver in a new personal best 50.33 with the Cuban also setting a PB 50.37 for bronze.

Nathan Arnett of Bahamas was fourth in 50.84 ahead of Fredericks who came in fifth with 51.04.

The World Youth leader at the beginning of the Championships Beneke finished a disappointing last in 51.93 from lane one.
