World Athletics Media Academy
Eight positions available for local applicants
Aspiring sports journalists in Botswana have a unique opportunity to cover a global sporting event, as World Athletics, in partnership with the World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26 local organising committee (LOC), officially invites applications for the World Athletics Media Academy Gaborone 2026.
Set to take place alongside the World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26 (2–3 May 2026), the academy is a flagship initiative of the World Athletics Communications Department. It continues a legacy of talent development that started in 1995 and follows a successful first edition held during the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, in collaboration with the International Sports Press Association (AIPS).
The intensive five-day programme aims to equip emerging journalists with the skills, knowledge and professional connections needed to cover athletics at the highest level. Selected participants will take part in practical workshops, receive mentorship from seasoned professionals, and complete reporting assignments at the event, where the world’s top athletes will compete for national pride and relay honours.
Moses Bantsi, CEO of the World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26, commented: “Hosting the World Athletics Relays is a tremendous source of pride for Botswana. The Media Academy allows us to extend that pride into professional growth for our own journalists. It’s a rare opportunity to work alongside the best in the field and to position Botswana as a centre for athletics storytelling.”
There are eight available local Media Academy positions open exclusively to citizens of Botswana. The LOC strongly encourages applications from both women and men to promote a balanced and diverse representation of local media talent.
Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of the action in Gaborone and to join the global network of athletics media professionals.
