A seminar was held in Sopot, Poland, during the IAAF World Indoor Championships last weekend for all six members of the International Starters Panel.

It provided a unique opportunity for the starters to exchange information as well as ensuring the current starting rules and procedures are being correctly and consistently applied.

In addition to the IAAF’s International Starters Panel, two additional members of the European Starters Panel were also invited and participated in the seminar.

The first part of the seminar was a practical session in the Ergo Arena, the venue for the IAAF World Indoor Championships Sopot 2014, with representatives from the Official IAAF Partner Seiko and their company’s start equipment.

The agenda of the subsequent meeting held at the nearby Hotel Sheraton included, among other issues, a discussion on the definition and consistent interpretation of a false start and the use of disciplinary cards, a review of the IAAF Starting Guidelines, an analysis of real starts using video and wave form examples, as well as an update on the false start equipment calibration and certification project.

The International Starters Panel was approved by the IAAF Council in 2007 and the inaugural Panel formed in 2008.

One of the main aims of establishing the Panel was to ensure the highest level of starters are used at IAAF World Athletics Series, and the Olympic Games, as well as ensuring an overall consistency and improvement of starters’ performances around the world.
