The former National Stadium was built as the main venue for the Third Asian Games in 1958 and the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964 on the site of the former Meiji Shrine Gaien Stadium. It was designed to evoke "strength", "simplicity" and "grace".
&nbsp;
The former National Stadium was rebuilt in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The New National Stadium (Japan National Stadium) was completed on 30 November 2019.

The World Athletics Championships will be held in Tokyo from 13-21 September 2025.
&nbsp;
More than 2000 athletes from some 200 countries will come to Tokyo to take part in one of the world's biggest sporting events.
&nbsp;
The first event was held in Helsinki, Finland.
&nbsp;
Tokyo will host the event for the second time and for the first time since 1991.&nbsp;
