Budapest, Margaret Island, runners

Budapest offers plenty of opportunities not only for lovers of history, architecture, culture or ruin bars. Sports enthusiasts can also choose from a variety of venues, and for those who like to relax by running, the Hungarian capital is a treasure trove. Whether it's urban running or hilly forest terrain, Budapest has become one of the favourite cities for runners.

In recent years, several special routes have been created for runners, and running circuits have been set up in numerous parks at different distances. Almost all of Budapest's running routes are located in the city's most popular areas, making them easily accessible by public transport.

We've put together our favourite running trails. Here is the first one.

Margaret Island's classic running track is perhaps the most popular of all, as this green oasis is a leisure Mecca for locals and tourists alike. Alongside the most beautiful views, visitors can enjoy trails, huge trees, animals and lavish attractions. The island has been a public park since 1908 and is home to historic ruins, a swimming pool, beach, petting zoo and theatre. There are also hotels, fountains and a variety of restaurants to ensure that everyone can find the best activities for them. Whether you arrive on foot, by bike or in running shoes.

The waterfront running track encircles the island, so scenic views are guaranteed in all directions. Open all year round, the route is a 5.3 km rubberised running track over predominantly flat terrain. Pleasing to the eyes and joints, the circuit is generally considered an easy route, can be completed in average 30-35 minutes. Advanced runners can double the distance, and after a run it's worth taking a break for a while, as the scenery alone is relaxing.
