The 44th national championships took place in the Senegalese capital this weekend (Fri 9 and Sat 10), in the presence of IAAF President Lamine Diack and the National Sports Minister Youssoupha Ndiaye, who jointly inaugurated the new track in the Stade Iba Mar Diop.

It was therefore quite appropriate that the new track witnessed a new national record, even if the men’s 3000m Steeplechase mark of 9:20.06 set by Samy Gomis on Saturday won’t exactly set Kenyan hearts trembling prior to the Athens Olympics!

It was the two Long Jump competitions which brought the best marks of the two days, with Ndiss Kaba Badji, winning the men’s discipline with a leap of 8.03m, and Kène Ndoye, more known worldwide for her triple jumping, taking the women’s event with a 6.48m effort.

On the track there was a women’s sprint double for Aminata Diouf (11.48 in 100m and 23.28 for 200m), while World 400m bronze medallist Amy Mbacke Thiam won the 400m in 53.85.
